Oned-y, I forget whether it was a Saturday half-holiday or not, I had to go from tke Mam on House to Kt-nsington, ana, in cjn3C-quence of the crash at the booking offi e, I had to wait soeral tmuutes before I could get my ticket. I noticed just i . front of n.e an elderly female in black, who from the.gen erl appairance of her batk I should hive taken to be a pew opener; but w hen sh" turn d hjr head I saw a face that must at one time hve been very beautiful. It retained its al most perfect features, a straight, sensitive ngse, bowed lips, soft gray ees and marble forehead, but marred by lines of trouble, care almost want. It came to her turn at the booking window, and in a musically sott, al most pleading oice she asked for "a third lingli to Charing Cross" a voice that vibra ted iu a tender minor kcj, jet clear and du tmct. Her veket was slapped down; she gently pushed a few coppers to the b okmg clerk, who- snatshed them up in his usual im petuous manner. She moved otf. I took my ticket aud fo'lpwed her. She interested ir.e. I think Pope tays "The proper study for mankind is nun ;" and, as under this heading I presume he included woman, ldetermued to studylifr Her movements were qui t and most graceful, contrasting strongly with her dress, though in harmony with her fice and voice. I got into the carriage after her, and had leisure to watch her. She seemed trou bled, her ejes mo.stened, and she involun tarily chsped her hands. Twice I thought she was going to tij', but eich time, with an evi dent eliort, she controlled herself. She took a handkerchief out of a little bag she carried (I hepe she did nat call it "a rid cule,' ) and dried her oj es, trj ing to look cheerful, but it was not much good; the tears would come, antl the could not get rid of that dim, far away look. When we got to Charing Cross she ruse to go out. The train moved on and I had lost lur, but I still seemed to ee those noft gray eyes looking out in the drejry black ness; and although I had only heard her voice at the booking office, it still rang in my ear, that gcntlo minor cadence. I noticed something whit- on the ant oppo aite it was a letter just in the corner where shfc had sat. She must have pulled ic i ut with he pocket handkerchief. Could I return it? Was there an address? No. Only a .oininorj sheet of note paper, with the supemcnplicn "Dearest Mother." I do not know whether I ought to lie ashamed of it or not, hut I read the letter. Korthlioro," and dated two dijs back. It was an excellently worded, well written, sid aud cla er letter, l'oor girl 1 Why did she wish for so much! Porlnps she was one of those poor, iTeluded on s w ho look upon tho stage as a sure road to fame mil fortune; fame she surelj- had not, or I should hivo heard of her name; fortune, as was evident from her letter, she had equally little of. Could I help her! Only in one waj ; I knew the manager of tho Theatre Koj.il. Dancbiidgc; I hid been of some ue to him a short while ago, md ho had wou a liwsuit through my assistance ; he had eaid at the same time that if I could make use of him in anj- way he was alwajs at mj' ser vice, and I determined to apply to hun. I wr te at once, stating the case, asking hun to help her if he could, and told him not to make use of my name as she would not know it. In afcwdivs I got an answer, in which Mr. Iiojee said he kuew the naino of Lester ory we'l; there had boiti in tho old dajs a Mrs Lester, a cr boiutiful womin, whom ho had known vtrv well, but of whom he hid quite lost sight. For tho mother's sik he would engage Miss Lester fur a minor part in the forthcoming pantomime at Ianebridge Would I come down aud spend Christmas with him anil assist at the debut ot mj protege I accepted his invitation and thanked him for his trouble, and hiviug p'.entj of work to do, the time slipped by erj quickly, so that found mjselfonC riitmaseve picking up my portmanteau, without having once given a thought to Miss Mary Lester or her beautiful mother. I had limed mjself to catch the I 40 train from Huston, and having time t) spare at the station, I looked out for a camigf. I got into the siuokiug compartment aud we l soou moved off. There was cnly one man iu the carnage sitting opposite me; he looked like a rich and educated pjoughboj ; his fea ture! w ere provincial, but he wu well dressed, and wheu he spoke his voice was loud, but more r lei cultivated t put him down as the traveled and uuivcrsited son of a brewer ; his slightlv hon-ey proclivities were shown by his noiseshse pin, tiijl.t trousers, aud the Sporl-eman in his hand. He asked me tor a light, and we began a conversation on various topics He soemed to be a well informed man but vcrj' young; not so much in age, per haps -I should say he was about tive-and-twentj as in speech and ideas; he had evi dently studied the world from some outside point, and although he had acquired some few of its refinements, he had also exaggerated its defects After some little time I te 1 almost asleep, and while doz.ng iu the corner with my ejes half closed I noticed mj opposite neighbor take a phutograph out of hi, pocket, kisa it violeutlj, wipe its face clean with his handkerchief and put it carefully away again. ! could only be Miss Lest-r Their voices wcro I am afraid I smiled rather loudlj at this, but j verj much alike hers and her mother's the tried to cover my amusement with a jawn 1 1 sune information, the same soft, pleading ac made some intellectual remark about the cents; uud I felt rather than saw that there weather, aud we began talking again. My friend seemed v erj anxious to indulge in re velations ot his private affairs ami pestered me with his fainilj matters, in uluc'i I could not Lake the slightest interest. He lived at Dane bridge ; hih father owned all the laud there abouts. "Awful rich man, the governor, doncher know! Made it all boiling down hogs into lard over in the United State,. I'm a born Amer ican, real Yauk'e, but I hare alwajs lived in England. I like Knglaud, douchcrknow! I'm going to many an English girl no! I oughtn't to saj that, thoiiuh. I haven't asked her yet; I've only known her a month. I'm awfullj in love head over tars, doucher koow!" He went on habblinu in this amorous strain for some time, finishing up by asking me whether I'd ever been in love. I told him that I did not feel myself hound to answer him. He continued - "Well, look here; do you know any as tresses professional ladies, you know!" "Yew, I know a few." "Do j on kno a! no, I mustn't ask you yet. But, look here, d'you think there's anything wrong, anj dhgrace, you know, iu marrjing an actress !" "Certainly not; why should there lie! There are as good ladicg oil the boards as off." "Oh, I'm awfully glad, becauso I'm in love with an actress at least, she wants to be one. She's going to act in the Danebridge panto mime." "Keally! I suppose I must not ask her name!" "Well, I'd rathei not tell you yet. The fact us, I do'i't want mj governor to know of it, you undei stand not yet, at any rate." "Certainly. I'm getting out at Danebndgo, to I dare say wo shall meet again. Good night." "Tata. Anplaysecr." And so we parted. My friend Uoyce was waiting for mo on the platform. He looked as hale and hearty as ever, reminding me more of a well-to do farmer than of a theat rical manager. In fact, he tiled to act up to the part, inasmuch tint he spoke about the crop, the harvest aud the laud, as though he kuew more of them than drops, flics, traps and Huch-like managerial adjuncts. He gave me a vigorous hand -shaking, and iu two min utes wo wciu trotting along thestraight white high load iu his dog ;art, behind a dupplcd quadrupled which he delighted in tailing "my little gray nuve." "Well, I mppose jou'ro rather glad to get WILLAMETTE PA11MER: PORTLAND, OREGON, FEBHUARY. 17, 1882. away from London for a few days, cli? You want some Iresh air and a change of scene. I wont in and found the whole fimilj' as sembled We had a vcrj' pleaaut evening The children had a Christmas tree; then we all burnt our lingers at tnipdrngon; and lini' ly we told ghost stories with the gas turnvd do nind the tire, salted, burning a ghastlj blue. Xext morning being Christmas day 1 did nut liurrj' up. In town it is my misfor tune to hive to bieahfiit at a, to me, liicon vcmeutlj earls hour, so that, when holidij miking, 1 indulge in a few hours extta cm braceineiit in the arms of Morpheus. I g tup next monuug just in time to go with llillj IIovco and hi, fanulj to chinch. The crvico was good and the sermon tolerable. The muni Chnttnns de-uiatious were about, including evidently new bonnets on tho heads of the lexding ladies of the rougiegation. After the servico was over we went out into the church jard; and the family havinp gone on in front, I remained wuh friend Dojce, ho wishing to spc ik w ith ;oine friends, 1 hoping to get a g'm.psi ol Miss Lester. It was a quaint, old churchyard, icry full of grives, mostlj old, r.eii and mouldy, here and there a bright patch of rt-d or white flowers, or a sadlv, new tombston . All round ran an old stone wall, overgrown with mos and ij dust behind the v.all was a thick bind of very dirk tir trcis. 'Ihr e llit stones were let into the side of tho wall as steps, and a narrow pithway led thro lgh the firs to the high road, thence a thin white stnp stretching "over the I ills and far awaj." 1 wa leaning against the wall, watching the sun throw orango beams of hilling gold through the dirk fir tree steins. Bovce was talking to a serious, gray-headed old m n, dressed in blick, whom I took for the sexton, but subiequcutlj- found out to lie the clow u. All at once I heard a voice j'ust at my elbow saj "Would jou allow me to pasi, please!" 1 stood bajk ami helped a lady over the wall, knowing at oiuc by the voice that it rr.U3t lie also the same quiet gray eyes. I had hardly time to notice auj thing else before sho was over and through tho first I onlj' saw that she was tall, well made, walked well, and wasquictlj dressed. Bill Boyce (or, as he was called en tie board", "Doublo B") came up, and we walked back. I told hun that I had seen Miss Lester, and he aske 1 how I had recognized her. I explained tho similarity of voice, but he seemed more amused than interested. "So jou admire the mother, do you! Well, you're nut the first. She was gloriously beau tiful in her young dajs the best Lady Mac, aj to loot's, that I'vo ever seen; not a bit like this young one. But, look here, jou must not get in 1 iv e with the daughter now, because I have every reason to believe that her heart, if not 1 cr hind, is already engaged. She ha flopped her y jury affections on to an eligible bachel r,' as the Yankcis say " "Who is the happy man!" asked I. "You'll see him this evening. He is a good fellow; rither rough, but he lias got lots of cash, which is a decided advantage in this money grubbing age." We paised a quiet aflernoo i; and, on com ing into the drawing room just before dinner, I found Miss Lester already aated on tho sofa next to Mrs. Boycc, I was duly introduced, and we began talking. Of curse, I at onco bevan to compare her with her mother, men tally. They were like, and yet not alike the same features, the same eyes, but a differ ent expression, though perhaps not more than ths difference in ago would warrant; the mother old and sad, the daughter young and merry. Yes; Miss Lester seemed very merry, laughing and talking at a great rate, though it struck me that her gaycty was just a little forced. She spoko well, but seemed a trifle flighty haid.y the girl, I thought, to write tho letter I read, and mean it. Altogether I was rather disappointed not so much in looks as in behavior, Sho seemed just a wee bit "bannaidish," if I may use the expression. Still, if alio could act that would make up for a great deal, for an actress has always a certain individuality about her (or is it, perhaps, th? want of it!) that raises her above the standard of a merely pretty, talk ative woman. The door was oponcd and Mr, Leyland was announced, Who should appear hut my friend of the railway ths amorous and confi dential young man who loved tho actreas, which actress was, of course, Miss Lester, He expressed great surprise at seeing mo, ejacu- Intine sundry "lly .loves!" and "did you ever, dnnclicrknow!" As oou as ho had eonviuccd himself that 1 was evidently not in lovo with the object of his adornation, ho begin to show licr &,roat at tention, and all through dinnei ho piid her the most ridiculous compliments, which she seemed lo relish as a savory nfconipiiuimiit to roast turkey with chestnut stulhng. Aftir diiinor tho xamo thing continued ( and I was not a little -glvl when Miss Lister went homo mi Icr tho convoy of her admiring twain. The next day was all excitement in prepar ing for tho evening's pantomime. As a com pie to str.ini;r to that mysterious legion known to us outsiders as "behind tho sccncn, ' I took a great interest in all that was going on, gottiug myself soveral tunes inextricably nnxol up among tho paiitoinimlc.il paraplur u Uia, to tho general incouv cnicnco of the act ors, as is the usual way with strangers in those regiens. In tho evening I Rilectcd a seat at tho side of tho stalls, iu preference to going behind, for, though it may bo undignified to conlcss it, I have an infantile admiration for panto mime, and have loved a different Columbine every jcar as long as I can remember. Well, in due tune Miss Leatcrcame on, and though she had an mump rtant part, she was, I gnevo to rolsto, a deid failure Sho could not sing, and she evidently had forgotten her few lines; "Mem Lielichen was wlllst du noch mchr'" Mr. Lowland, from tho solitir) gram! cm ol a private box, thtew lni a bouquet, hut even this failed to revive her nii-inorv, or auimite lur movement"; the onlj part sho did well was her exit. She hid to hurrj olf in the list scene, prcsumablj to call down the goddess of plentj to fiirnnh tho traiisforma'icii scene, nnd she rushul olf very well; judging fiom mj own feelings she mint hive been verj glad to ge t thu performince ovei Aftei it was over Hilly llojco told mo it was all arranged in fact, it hid been ar ranged luforo tho perfornnnco begin ho knew she would not be a success, and had an other girl to "uiideistudv " her dozen lines. About th'co months later, when back at work, I saw the announcement of hr mar mgo in tho aper, aud as in tho natural course of cv nits, the beiutiful mother would bo no longer iu want of the good tlungiof this life, I think uiy little mission was accom plished, and I may Hatter mjself that it came from the sweet intonati u of the four little words "Third single, Charing Cross." $1500 per jeircan lie easily made at hoiim working for K. 0.
