Tiiuimiiav, September 20. The wheat market shows a marked im provement over lust week, prices having ad vanced to $1.(10 on wharf for Valley wheat, Eastern Oregon advancing correspondingly. This figure hai been freely paid for three, days pant owing to an advance abroad. Foreign murkutH have shov. 11 constant strength during this week, closing strong at slightly better prices. Tho touu of tho market now seems uito firm, and without a decline abroad pres ent prices will bo maintained. Ciiicaho, Sept. 27. There was an extraor dinary rise in wheat on thu regular board to day, and still more extraordinary advance on tno can Doiru. i-riccs on can as compared with Saturday's closing wero about seven cents higher, and as compared with closing on regular uoard four or five cents higher. The Ciuso of tho advanco is by some attributed to a corner, by others to the great short sales that arc supposed to havo been made, and by still others to the fact that everybody seems to be Inlying. It was said to-day that tin; Cniciiinitians who realized so heavily on tho August corner wero short on September, and sold a million bushels this morning to break tho market, but failing in this thoy began to buy heavily to cover their shorts, thus swell ing thu boom in prices. Rates for wheat wero higher to-day than for several years past, and there seems to be less corners here than in Milwaukee, to which city 22,000 bushels wero shipped. Nov York Freights Situation. Although there arc new features in the freight market via Cape Horn, there seems to bu a very general feeling that the season will lo an active one. This is based upon the fact that many shippers aio already in receipt of orders, and that future ones will be larger than usual, and that it is thought that there will bu considerable cancelling of contracts with railroads during tho ensuing threo mouths, especially by Urge shippers, many of wuoui win return to clippers it tuuy tin not go over tho Atchison, Topcka and Santa Fu road. At any rate it is understood tint there is considerable lis.atisfictiou with the present contract system and it will havo to bo revised somehow, Kate" remain very steady notwith standing thu quiet sales of thu in nket. Ton nage is still scarce, and as many of old Cali fornia lines am scattered in dill'ercnt parts of tho world, it is probablu that agents will havu ilillieulty in getting Niutaiilu ships tor lints. Tho wool trado has been quiet, owing to thu ceremonies of Mon day, hut prices arc very linn and tho outlook continues encouraging. Thu demand contin ues to run largely in line lleeces, and evident ly nt thu present rato ot consumption the fctock of lino lleeces will mu shcit later in thu season. Medium crades arc in demand. Fine del.iiuu and desirable lots of washed and combing am sought after, sales of Ohio and Pennsylvania lleeces bciiii! 43 15 for X and XX, and no wools in good condition can now liu bought under these tigures. Wisconsin and Michigan X lleeces havu been sold at 40 t'.'i. Desirablu lots of Michigan are generally held at 4'2ii.42i. Medium and No. 1 lleeces am in den, and with linn sales, at prices rang ing from 4.ric. to 47c. Unwashed lleeces con. tiniie in demand. All grades aro sought af ter, fiom carpet stock to tirst and ehoicu me dium. Sales ranted from 10c. to 24c. for low and coarse, 25(i32c, tine, 27(ii3.c. for medium grades, including ehoicu lots for 33(ii35c. In combing and delaine lleeces sales ranged from 15c. to 48c. for tino delaine, 40c. to 50c. for medium and choieo combings, and 4042c. for coarse. California wool is in request and has been holding uioiti fiecly than tor some time past. Pulled wools am lirm and in de mand with sales low. Thu Sail Francisco (VmiHiVe has this item alwut the scarcity of raisins: It is now ascer tained beyond a possibility of doubt that tho Malaga raisin crop this year will bo nearly a total failure, and that tho Uhited States w ill bu forced to depend almost exclusively upon California for its supply of this important liixuiy, Having obtained early information of this fact, an extensive Chicago commission house, in conjunction w ith one of the teadieg canning establishments on this coast, entered this Mold and purchased the entire raisin crop of tho s ate, or more properly speaking, of those fruit-growers who make thu culture of thu raisin a specialty. Of course they will make an immense sum of money on tlk'ir ventutc, as high prices am certain to rule. WHAT SUE SIIOVLU IX). A FEW 8l;EHl IO.NS OF IMI'OKTAM F. OX A HIIUKCT OF IVrKltKSTIOTIIKLADIW. Anil t'rrMIn Fnrls Which Should be known by All Women. From the Homo Journal, New York.) A short timo since an article appearolin the columns of this paper, being a synopsis of a lecture delivered by a prominent woman be fore a well-known New England society. This article dealt so directly with the needs of women, and contained so many hints that were valuable, that it naturally attracted no little attention, and has, we learn, been a subject ot comment in social oircles in. nearly every part of tho land. Realizing that no sub ject can be of more vital importance, as well as interest to all readers, than the condition of the. women of America, we have collected and prepared with considerable care addi tional facts bearing upon the same subject. The ladies of this country have been more observed anil talked about than thosoot any other land, and 'Europeans always notice their characteristics usually with admiration. Sara Bernhardt declared she did not see how any one could resist tailing in love witn " those pretty American ladies." She might havo added, that even her far-famed French nation would find it difficult to equal, much less excel, American women in quickness of perception and brilliancy of intellect. The minds and manners of American women aru all that can be desired ; but it is a lamentable fact that their physical frames aro far inferior in comparison with their social and mental characteristics. The women of Kngland are noted for their florid health ; those of Ger many for their strong corstitutions, and the ladies of Fiance for their exuberance of spirits. Hut American women possums no one of theso qualitits in any prominence, and all ot them only in a slight degree. The reason for this must be plain to every carelul ob server, nedentery ways, tievotion to rasiuon but above all anil more than all, careless ness and indifference to daily habits and du ties, have rendered tho women of this land far less stroiia and healthy than it is either their duty or privilege to be. This irregular and iudiliercut in nnar of living brings about tho most serious results, anil is both directly and indirectly of untold injury to tho race. Tho cause therefore being manifestly nude)' tho contiol of tho women themselves, the power to remove it must naturally bu under their control also. American women can possess just as charmed lives as though they lived in F.uropc or any foreign land, if they only desire nnd determine to do so. The priiuany cause of suffering from dis ease is impure blood. The performance of the n itural functions of womanhood and mother Uoo in mi .. .linMuaa, nor should it bu treated as such, and to maintain onu's health thu or gans which make and purify the blood must bo preserved in, or restored to, their noim.il condition. Theso organs arc the kidneys and liver. It is tho olfico of the kidneys to take from thu blood tho pi isoui us matter which has been collected from all parts of tho body and pass it oil' from tho system. If they are impaired in their action thoy cannot do this work, thu poison accumulates, all tho organs in the body which aio Miitiiined by the blood are weaken cned.and givo x)ay, and finally the kidneys and contiguous organ becoiuo the source of gieat pain, and without prompt relief death is certain. It is the ollicc of thu liver to extract other impurities from thu blood and utilize a portion of them for digestion. If tho liver is disorder id all forms of dyspepsia occur, the bowels cam ot expel tho wasto matter and tho most distressing inconveniences follow. This is es pecially true in the case of women. And if thu bowels aru thus inactive and overloaded the neighboring organs, which are particularly de pendent for their right action upon the state of tho liver, bowels and kidneys, become dis placed, and thu const queuces which ensue aru too well known to require restatement in a Miggestivo article of this kind,, The secret, however, of preventing theso manifold disor ders is to keep tho kidneys and.livcr in per- lect wui king condition. I Ins is rcsssur, tins is science, and it appeals with torce to tho sut- fcring women of America. Whtii thu body is in a healthy condition then loiuo beauty ot complexion, elasticity of step, hopefulness of disposition anil comfort and happimss in the duties and rcsponsibil ities of ,i family. There is, therefore, every incentive to secure and preserve buoyant health. Warner's Safo Kidney ai.d Liver Cure, tho remedy described in the lecture to which re ferenco has already been made, is receiving, as it certainly merits, thu most careful attention and thu trial of the women of the laud. It is a pure and tiniple vegetable remedy which is now doing more to bring health and strength to tho American women than any one thing, w hieh has over been discovered. It acts di rectly upon tho liver, bowels and adjacent or gans, soothes any inflammation, allays all pain and places those organs in a condition to bring health to the liody and happiness to the lifu. The manufacturers of this great remedy, as wu learn from the lecture, have tho written thanks of thousands of women many of them of great prominence- but these lcttcis aro very properly regarded as too socred for pub lic.itioii. No true woman is pleased to have her physical troubles haunted in the eyes ot thu world. The unquestionable value of Warner's Safe Kidney and Liver Cure is all the more mini fest from the fact that heretofore no adequate remedy for thu ills of women has ever lccn discovered: nor havu the medical urofessiou ever been able to a-Nit woman in her troubles as she deserves. This l. perhaps, largely due to thu pretence of so much bigotry and intol erance in Out profession, The history of medicine is a history which illustrates to the fullest tho blighting effect of bigotry and in. tolerance. Harvey. ho diicovereil the circu lation of tho blood, was driven out of Kng land. Jcimer, the father of vaccination, was oppressed and scott'ed at. Thompson, the loitntler ot the llioiumonian theory, was thu victim of a hatred conspiracy. Morton, in Mavuchusett-s, who introduced the use of either in surgical iir-er.ition,a charged with wnciicrair, ana et the discoveries ot itieee men aie to day rocoguiied as of infinite bene fit tcHhe race. It is the olemu duty of c cry phy.ician in the lau i to take advantage of every opportuni'y which it within hi reach; nut to promote Hie lutcrvtti of this or thai school, but to heal the people of their infirm ities. All have witnessed death-bed scenes and felt that if skill were equal to disease death might have been posteoned many ytars ago that science (if use were made of all the agencies she has revealed) was equal to a cure. How many a time in the expcnencei of all has this been illustrated I A cold is con tracted, it refuses to yield to a fixed form of treatment, the physician may not be candid enough to call in the aid of other schools, or independent agencies, and the dear one dies because the doctor will not exhaust ereri ex jmlimt know n to the world for relief ! If he have the courage of his convictions and em ploys outside agencies ho is visited with ex pulsion from the society of his fellows, and, forsooth, becomes what they choose to call a "quack."' When they have exhausted all the agencies approved by theirschools they "shirk ihj responsibility" of the death of their pa tient by advising a trip to Colorado or Florida or a voyage to Kurope! Such treatment may be in accordance with tho "code of ethics,' but in the view of thu unprejudiced public it is downright cruelty, if it may not bo even more strongly cnarncienzeu. There is no reason, however, why the women in this land should not possess the best of health and spirits. The character of the country, the activity of her surroundings and the opportunities afforded for recovering lost health and retaining the tamo are greater than those of any other land on the faco of the clobe. By a careful observance of the plain and simple laws of health ; by a watch ml care over daily habits and duties, and by a regulation of tho life with the remedy above named, which has become so prominent and valuable, there is no reason why all the de sirable things we lave mentioned may not be secured in their highest degree. It is, there fore, a matter of importance that all women give this subject the attention winch it de serves, and tho care which they are able to bestow, conscious that their ellorts are certain to bring thrm perfect health and long and happy lives.
