THE TRUE TEST.

of Value to All Readers.
Christian at Work
The truo test of any iiliifiou is tho elicit it
produces upon thu lives of those who piofess
it. And, indeed, thu t htol teal merit eNery
where mutt bu the pawcr it possesses of ac
complishing desirable rcsutts. In this ago of
tho world men arc not judged by what they
claim to bo able to do, lint by what they on
iloj not by w hat they arc reputed to bo, but
by what they are. Hero is wlicio tho religion

tliero Is much hypocrisy in ti u Church, uml

which characterize tho iclfgious of Arabia and

This principle is cipially true in all other

There ire no more reliable endorsements to
bo found in this land than those above given
and coming from divines of such prominence
they proVH beyond a doubt thu value of tho
great remedy of which they speak. It should
also bo remembered that Mr. II. 11. Warner,
the proprietor and mauufactuicr of this lent
cdy, was himself cured by its uo after having
been gnen up to dio by several physicians.
So grateful was ho for his rcnisrkablo euro
that he determined tho world should know of
this remedy, and he therefore began its msiiti
facture. Mr. Warner Is also a prominent pa
tron of other public enterprises nnd thu sci
ences, and, by endowing tho Warner Astro

by his tinny other public benefactions, has

found which not only cuics thu worst as well
as all minor tidiuhlos of this nature, but also
regulates, controls and keeps in perfect order
thesu most important organs at all times, it is
certainly cause for gratitude, This is just
what has been done in thousands of cases in

what will bo dono in tuns of thousands of oth

Some farmers seem to think that crop only
bring them any return which they can haul
to markit ami sell directly for cash. It is no
trouble fur them to cstimatu how much their
wheat, oats, or corn crop was worth, for they
had so many bushels, and thuy sold thu tur
pi us for so much per bushel; no trouble to toll
what their cattle, hogs, or sheep amounted to,
for they averaged so many pounds at so many
ctnts per pound but If you wcro to ask them
what their clover pasture wss worth, they
could ii t tell. Purhaps somu of them never
thought bvf ru that it had any valtit, or if
thoy did so t'.iink, did not taku thu tumble to
estimate it, becaitso fractious nlvvays bothered
them, and their istimato would bu so small it
would have to bo expressed by f rations.
Xovv, of thu uiops of tho farm, few, if any
btiug a larger return than clover. Xot that I
would advise tho farmer to raisu nothing but
cIjvit, for such an extreme would result in
disa-tcr, and I most emphatically believe in
mixed husbandly) but when judiciously pro
duced, no crop brings in n i vtttrii in a great
variety of ways, nnd very fu'V bring in larger
leturns. - ,
Clover is good for pas I uro. When mixed
with timothy, no better pasture can lia found
for horses and cattle. When pure, it is the
best Summer feed for hogs ever discovered.
A hog is happy in a clover field, and will bid
iletlanco to cholera in all its hideous forms-
providtd lie has decent water to drink. In
the fall ho wilt come oil" of the clover with a
stomach yearning for corn, not because liu IS
tired of clover, but lK-causit ho simply wants
a change. How that hog will put on llesli
will bo uiitouithlng, ami ivitaiuly gtatifying
to thu fortunato individual that markets him.
As n fertiliser clover is surpassed by no
other crop. There may bu soils so poor that
clover will n ,t grow upon them, but thoy are
fuw and far butwien in all except tho oldest
States, On such soils a crop of luicku. heat
plowed under, will generally furnish enough
vegetable matter to support n crop ot clover.
While I do not udvocato thu ttsu of ilovvr us
a fettiluer forwhe.it, when stable (r Urn
j mil manure can bo had, for corn I know of
nothing better. For this crop lk.rnyaid
manure should never bo used when it uau bo
possibly avoided. During tha dry Summer
mouths it is Apt to absorb thu moisture, of
which, it is safo to ,uy, the soil veiy raiely
Kissesses a superabundance. Thou,' ton, it
firiucnts, and supplies its food to tho corn
when tliust.dk is forming, nml y thu time
the car is ready to develop, has exhausted its
supply, leaving nothing for the kernels; slid
tliu result is plenty of fodder, but verylittlo
grain. Clover does not exhaust its supply by
earing time, but ferments slowly during thu
whole Summer, allording nutriment during
tho entire grow tliof thu plant., :
' Hut tho value, of clover do.-s not lUpciid
ulouo upon its availablity for iasturn or ma
uuru, Win n properly mrud and protected,
it makes by far tho Ut hay of any other
grass extensively sown in this country. Hut
as thu chief value of clover hay depends iton
proper curing and saving, it is often, in fuel,
in a majority of cases, put up in n nearly
worthless condition, It should lm mown at
thu first appearance of brow n heads, and if
possible, cured without rain, and not pioro
than one dew. Very often what is cut Hi the
foitiioou cm be put up in tho afternoon; ami
when ever this is possible, it slioud bo done.
Then it should be put in a mow, or at lest
under good shod, erected for that purpose.
If you must stack it nut of doors, put a load
of timothy hay on top of each stack, whiih
will carry oir lh vvatir inuili Mter than tho
coarse, en oked stems of clover, and save tho
hay lK-neath.
