TlirimiAV, June 10.
The wool market has considerable life, and
there has Wen active demand at good prices,
for liest character of fleeces, while coarse
and heavy grease lota arc not cared for
Prices hao really held up better than we
dared hope for a month ago, but wo have
reason to believe that good Oregon wools havo
won a reputation that will aluaya insure n
demand at the best gnln rates, since inanulac.
(urea llnd thrm very desirable. The U. S.
Economist of dune Ith, goes at length into a
review of the inaikrt, slums the conditions
or a year past, that many manufacturers havo
Wen heavy losers on account of rescinding of
orders received eaily in tliesennon, on strength
of which they had made heavy invhaiea at
high pucis for stock. It places the lossi-a of
woolen mills at twenty millions of dollars,
and chiiiii tliat thu wool clip of 1SSI will
reach tin cc hundred millions of pounds, in
crease of thirteen per cent., but all these
Statements iln not seem tuallict the woolen
market particularly, for our wools are In de
mand at really fair and satislactory prices.
It should Iw evident to all farmers that sheep
husbandry oilers a plrasaut and tolerably cer
tain relief from the monotony of wheat farm
ing, and should lie combined with the other
to as vreat an extent as practicable.
Wool is ready sale for good lots, quotations
being lor Eastern, 18 to 24 cts,, and even a
trifle more for real choice) Valley is worth 22
to 27 cts,, but mostly sold in interior towns.
We hear of higher rates paid for wool than wo
five in price list, and the market seems im
proving. The limits for choicest lots of East
rn seem to be 'Jo cts.) for l-st Valley, 28 cts.,
perhaps 21) cts., for extra choice) and best
Umpqua, 30 to 31 cts., but avcrsgo rates are
M given first, with exceptional prices for the
very choicist oUcriugt,
The wheat market shows improvement, as
exporters concede that they have paid (1.33
par cental for wheat to till out cargoes, and
rumor says that eveu more has lieen paid
ran as high as $1.37). It seems true that
leading exporters are short and having Ixir
rowed all they could, are compelled to buy at
dvauced figures. We hear ol several ships
lying in the river waiting for cargoes, one of
which has been waiting twd weeks. It is the
true policy for farmers to hold and compel an
advance, ami they seem to be doing it. When
we ace vsportera compelled to advance prices
because they caanot mal'.o purchase, it looks
s if the producers of the country have somo
firmness. 'Ihe Interior Mrrchauta' Ageucy
informs us that they have dinpoied of over
1000 tons of Valley wheat within a few days,
realiiiiig Ixtter than $1,30 per cental. That
looks like business improvement in faor of
the producer,
Oats are In fair demand at .V) cts, for local

Old potatoes are in demand at figures
quoted, as farmers aro ncviuiug to not press
them on the market.

CALIFORNIA CROrj AND MARKETS,
From Hsn FJsnHtcn OniiiintrrUMIeniM, June Dth,
llusliiess alfalrs generally stem to bn ex
ceedingly prosperous, lint only in this city but
thmugliout the Statu. Tho careful observer
will have noticed in his w,ilks aliout town the
great number of costly stores and hugii blocks
of buildings (lira proof) and of great height
that have lieen recently erected or are now in
process of crrction upon many of tho leading
bushiest stieets of thu city, notably on Mar

greatly enhanced theieby. In commercial
circles thu most uoUlilu featuro is thu rapid
rise in the price of rellued sugars, being occa
sioned by the advance in New York and nthei
