NEW YORK WOOL MARKET. f imiAr KvKM.su, Mar. 18, 1881. from V. 8. Reonoinlil, Tlio wool markets of America aro nothing if liliijrvk tu nviivnvii'll.il 1IIVU1IIU LTIipdOIIH. During thu past year tho eruptions have turned into a burning stream of lava, which has badly excoriated everybody who had the misfortune of coming in its pathway and with lacked sulllcient intelligence to jump aside in time from its mad prances. For over a year tho markets of tho cntintrv hao U'en liku a jiimping-jack whenever it wrio found they retained any enilnr at all oi vitality, and those who had thn most money to invest and thought they wire tho wisest ol ioIoiis, havo fared thu worst of any, for it is low seen that while they wero tho boldest to take risks (confident in tin ir own wisdom that they kuuw what they wero about), they had mly lieen able to savo their capital without my profits, while many havu lieon doomed to flvery heavy losses. This operation commoner.! over a year ago when the trade went mad, paying from 2flc to :i4o a nouud for ungrown Texas, and 31($.17c for California Snrii'ir wools, which when scour. l and ready for tho cards cost woolen pro ducers from IKV; to $1. 17 Jc, and 91.28) a pound. Now the In-st of all these wools wo never worth over 7flo a pound, and not even this, and manufacturers who have Ken using these hiavy shrink and hurry wools now find it a dilllcult matter to make lioth cuds meet. Three month ago fino wool was on a sin ng upward incline. A good itoiihlo XX Ohio was worth ASc, and fancy clips wero held at flOo, To-day this wool can lo liouirhtat 40 I'JV, while goods can Iki brought even lower, Wisconsin XX lleico has been sold at .tllo by imrties here, and line extra luilM wools as lino as an X Ohio can lw bought for omi-third of a dollar or A7o for the scoured pound, Choice XX Ohio tleeces havo been sold at figures which make the scoured cost only 70 Jc, ami beautiful Territorial woola have sold at 70o and Mow for tho scoured pound. Wool can bought to-day as cheap as any mauiifaiturer needs, and if they tarry much longer, they will wait until it is too late, and reaction will ensue that will carry them on another swell tido into the clip season next mouth. Now is tkiinpportune moment to buy chrsn wool everywhere at this side of Mason and Dixon's line, all intelligent and well informed manufacturci acknowledge by their disposition to take hold of every cheap lot ollcred. Dnrnbupch'- Uit LnNlKi.v, March, 7th. The first week in March find a largo pro portion of Knglish land implanted, nnd if altout half of the usual wheat crop is aliovo ground the rctt is in tho cold rotting reed bed, or altogether past tho time for sawing. As to barley, tho whole of the crop, broadly speak ing, has yet to be planted, sineo oven the early counties are behindhand this March, and to mako a cowl lx.il or the sceil a week to a fortnight's genial weather is required. Future crop prospect aro therefore discoursing, and the farmer ha to look to the coming month rather than to the post for any promise. Doubtless this position will mako Knglish wheat growers slow to sell their remaining stocks, but one can hardly ascribo the fort night's recovery of market spirit and Is 6d to 2s 0d advance in price to any action of Kng Hah farmers) tho improvement rcits upon a broader basis, that of imports, which, having to contribute nearly foupfifths of the next fivo months' supply, are, for tho present, fall Ing lclow ucli duty. Nor are there immedi ate prospects of increased receipts. A corres pondent of this list, tinder tho signature of JorJ, has avowed that after deducting seed from last yiar's wheat crop ho "reckoned upon 8 to 8 J million qrs. of wheat," which do not appear to him forthcoming, since I havo computed tho further deliveries of fanners at only 2J million qrs., and ns sliout 4 million qrs. arc returned as soui since narvcii, mo in ference is drawn that only 0J million qrs. can lo tho real out-turn of tho 18S0 honest. To carry tho reasoning further, if 4 million q-s. only havu lieen delivered, and if tho crop was as estimated last October 8J million, (figures I Ktill believe in at the present date) then between March 1st and the 31st of August the markets may look for 4 J million qrs,, or ratnr over iou,iwu qrs. wccaiy. Now if such a farmer' delivery wa likely the present rise of price would havo to l given up si an infatuation, whereas it has all the sign of possessing a robust ennsitution; and if Table was as certain to improve a it is certain tho olllcial deliveries of wheat will not run 180,000 qrs. weekly, speculation would soon ho rampant In thu "Daltic," and much of tho idle money of London would find employment in wheat. However, by tho common light of oxiiericuco wo may bo sure that for tho rest of this season nearly four-fifths of tho dread stulls wanted for this country must bo sought for outsido these islands, and tho wheat buy er of tho past fortnight need not tako alarm even if tho Knglish wheat crop could be p-ov. .id to bo as estimated, 8 million qrs. First, tho returns of IM) towns, multiplied by 4, as most persons reckon, cannot bo ac cepted as giving tho quotient of nearly 800 mirkct hotels, where much unrecorded bus 1111 ss takes place. Nor do tho olllcial figures include the direct sale from farmer to miller, which is a very common occurrence in those countries where, lost season, the Wst crops were grown. Nor do statistics of pa.t year allow JorJ or other to draw tho inference that (iactto returns represent tho actual crop. In ueh a year as 1874, which gave a crop of ibout 14 millions, tho returns, were minus 4 millions ol this total) and whether the figure of the past years lw taken, or those of ten vears, the gross totals will bewidelydillereut, the olllcial figures always lieing far short of thu quantity grown and known to bo consum 11I. A an instance, if tho Port of London rt-ccitv 3,000 iir. weekly of Knglish wheat, the quantity reported as sold will bo found seldom more than half, and if (as I havo often lone) any person will go to tho Statistical Oil lee in Whitehall and read thorough the rc turns from the 1.10 towns, he will bo astonisl . cdtotlud several well known agricultural centres in which for several wtiks apparently tho inhabitants hive gone without bread, siuco 110 wheat has Ucu kohl! The well known market of Heading, according to Oa lette returns, sells less iu 13 week than Norwich does on a single Saturday! Where as the probable truth is, the llcrkshire miller known the goodness of their local wheat and buy it direct from their noighliors, whilst much of the Kastam comities wluat la pur chased at market of other district, Tho whole process of these otlicial returns ia con siden-d altogether untrustworthy, and too un satisfactory to be made the baits of any mer chant's serious argument, w hilst even if they were accurate in fact, the intenninging of one season's crop with another renders!! estimate uncertain. The over stocks or reseive of 1874 and even 1878 augmented the deliverie of tie next season to au astonishing extent. It the Knglish crop wa therefore 8J million qrs., probably the past six months have eaten up over 5J millions, as most country miller and dealer will admit, notw ithsUuding the liaztfttv' total of 4 million, and the 2 to 3d millions yet to bo consumed will only creep to market slow ly, ltuyers therefore may well feel inclined to act briskly, and buy what they want to replenish their mills ami grauar ies. This argument was used iu January, before six weeks of bad weather had further made bad matter worse, and before consump ttou in Fvbrurary had swept our granary Hoom of their poor reserve before In fact tho reader was ready to bclieyo iu it. Kxact ly a month ago, Februrary 7th, whilst tho olllcial report in this List of tho day's business said, "the vnluo of wheat continues todecline," I wroto relative to same, "that a really good argument require senso as well is facts to support it, and few persons will deny that reasons of tho existing decline of wheat aro conspicuously absent.'' and "thcro is no spec tre in sight to frighten tho mcmWs of tho wheat trada 111 February and March notwith standing tho cxiDtingdcspondcnco." Still tho markets run a dull ditch liko course, nnd writing a fortnight ngo, Februrary 2 1st, whilst noticing thu expected 2s to 3d ndvanco in price had not come, I wrolo "I think thu do main! must yet come", mid "tho country demand is manifesting itself mimiatakcahly.' Thu question now is, w lien tho ndvnucu has been accomplished, will it bo inniiitiined, re cede, or inovo further forward? In tho wheat trade, min meteorology, "long foretold long last, short notice soon past," is a safe maxim, but besides that thcro is a con current demand that current supplies cannot eaily satisfy) tho argument that was goo I a month ago is better now by all the bad weath er there of February, and thecoiiscqueiit wotse agricultural nrospecU of the year. One of tho first Influences in Spring to depress the prico of fluur, tho abundanco of fresh vegeta bles, with this year certainly be wanting) and of the large bulk of breadstuff afloat five sixths aro from Pacific port with a destination to this country, but from which a considera ble portion may bo diverted to the Continent. The Knglish averago of wheat is 8s below Pari quotations, and aliout 4s under thoso of llerlin, whilst rye at tho latter place 43s 9d is above the value of Knglish farmers' wheat. Moreover, the usual Spring and Summer sup ply of North Kusian and German wheat, and of South llusslan ro and wheat, Is likely to fall entirely or to lie of only insignificant quantity, so that tho antagonist to America have to be found in India and Auitralia. In such position, and with tho deliverie of home grown wheat dwindling week by week, the conclusion is a faironofrom the premises, that whore prices now are, they may bo kept easi ly nnd steadily, and that with any further adverse weather they will again moderately advance. A mouth ago, February 7th, 23 was the prico accepted for male, American terms, May-June shipment, and 4 Is for No. 2 Stand ard California!!, whilst of Hed American, Feb ruary-March shipment there were sellers at 43s (I. These figures are given to contrast with present currencies, which show 2s to 3s pir quarter advance on wheat, and over l on mitre, even for distant delivery. It must not be therefore any matter of surprise that a pause iu buying should bo registered for last .Saturday and to day, nor must it bo supposed that tho market now can further advance as easily a it did when at it late lower level) but what all concerned may hold fast by is the permanent fact that Kngland contains a largo enforced demand to satisfy, that the Contiucut through it centers ol Antwerp and llcrlih, ha also largo and regulai require ments, that stock are very bare, and that reckoning upon our assured supplies any sur plus is not within tho range of practical com merce, unless stimulated by price that are not likely to be ollered. It would probably takn a .1 silvauie 011 wheat to attract a mil lion quarters more than our consumptive want in tho next three, nonths, and yet a million quartei in our mill and granaries would not maku stocks heavy. Statistics aro on tho side of steady markets for tho future, and only the .nfliienco of weather on opinion remain! to ili.turb future transactions. NEW THIS WEEK. D. W.
