Stnlrinrnl or linker nnil lord Arrrslcd for
Attempting to Mirrk n Train.
Tlio Seattle Jnttlllgencer says in regard to
tho arrest of tlio two men charged with at
tempting to wreck n train of cars on the
Northern l'acifio Knllro.id near Kalama t Tlio
'Grand Jury of tho present term of court at
.Kalama will iuvcstigitto tho caso of tho M
legeil attempt at train wrecking on tho lino
of the Northern Pacific, in Cowlitz county,
last week. Tho young men charged with this
heinous ollcnso nro Win. Maker, of 1'ortlaud,
and Chas. Lord, formerly of Scattlo and well
known en tlio Columbia rlvor and Puget
Sound, Tlio account given of tho alTalr and
sPulilishcil in a number of our contemporaries,
was entirely ono sided, and camo from instl
tutiinr tho prosecution. It is only right and
just that tho young men should bo heard in
their own defemc. According to their story
they landed at Kalama on their way from
Portland to Pugct Sound. They had not
enough money to pay two fares to Tacoina,
and after making an unsuccessful cllbrt to get
tlio ride over on a sing!o faro, or less, they til
tcrmincd to walk, llcforo starting, how
eer, they ran across two other chaps,
jie of whom Is just out of tho Tcr
ritorial Penitentiary. Thoy had a bit
of trouble with them, and tho ex
convict had his head lightly punched
by young Lord. This angered him and ho
swore ho'd havo revenge. Lord and linker
started on their tramp to salt water. Tho
southern bound train passed them, and on
arrival at Kalama ruported an attempt at
wrecking, a largo rock having been placed on
ono sido of the track, which the engineer dis
covered in tiiiie to remove beforu injury was
done. Tho ex-convict heard of the matter at
bnee, and ho promptly and boldly declared
that 1jrd and linker must be tho ollendcrs,
as ho had hoard them make threats against
tho train and train men before leaving Ka
lama. On the strength of this charge u war.
rant was sworn out and placed in tlio Imtitlr
ol n Deputy Shcriir, who, taking the jailbird
alnng to identify the young men, started in
pursuit on an engine, llakcr and Lord were
speedily sighted and arrested, tho latter much
to their surprise, and indignation. Tho ex
convict inado himself unpleasantly ollicious in
attempting to tio tho hands ot Lord, who hit
him another clip on the head and knocked
him into tho ditch alongside. Nothing was
proved ngainst them on their examination,
and tho Justice concluded that ho would hold
them for the examination of tho District
Court, which would bo held the week follow
ing. They were accordingly locked up. Tho
story of llakcr and Lord being ejected from
tho train, and of making violent threats, ami
of tho road, being obstructed with a pile of
,tlc and rooks, they deny ill toto,

Yesterday morning In tho Stato Circuit
Court, Judge Stott overruled thu motion for
n new trial inado by tho attorneys of
Kdward Monlaunt, who was indicted
by tho present drawl Jury for kidnapping a
sailor named Paul llciittncr, and preventing
him from shipping on a vessel, and on terms
of his own selection, llcfoiu senteneo was
Sussed upon him by tho Circuit Court, Mor
aunt made a few remark, saying that ho
had no intention of kidnapping llciittncr and,
what ho was doing was in tho interest of tho
sailors by keeping them from shipping at less
than $.'10 a mouth. If he, in doing as ho did,
was guilty of kidnapping, lie did it through
innocence Ho was a sailor himself, and had
been in command of a schooner running on
tho southern coast. When ha camo to
Portland ho hail not intended to eurairo as a
runner for Douulass, the keeper of the sailor
4par'ding home, but went to work as such, so
iai to havo something to do until thu Hulling
season commenced, wlicn no intended to leave
here.
Judgo Stott, in passing sentence on tho
prisoner, said that ho had been utility of a
very grave oUcusc, ono that tho community at
large had taken a great interest in, Tlio sail,
ors hero had a right to go and come as
thoy pleased, oud were not to be governed by
cither tho keepers of sailor boarding houses or
tho runners therefor. Judgo Stott then sen
tenccd Monlaunt to a term of eighteen mouths
in the Penitentiary, nnd he will bo taken to
Salem to-day and placed in that institution.
Henry Henrickson, tho "runner" who took
part in the brutal treatment of the sailor

tho summit to bo 0,050 feet abovo tho

Tho weather had been very favorable,
though cold. Mr. Sheets will survey a

Says tlio Seattlo l'ost: D. Rons, in a
tour of thn Sound last week, including
Victoria, obtained orders for 700 bar
rels of San Fntncisco Hour, which will
bo delivered at 82 per ton. Hitherto
tho bulk of Hour used in tho Sound
country was shipped from Oregon, but
tho low rates of freight caused by tho
completion of steam colliers coming to
this section for coal, bids fair to turn
tho Hour tnulo to San Francisco, to tho
injury of Oregon millers.
