J The good people of Multnomah county are not out of debt by any means. In fact, they are considerably in debt. Washington Territory, on the north side, commanding tho cntrahco by tlio north channel, which passes in close to tho' headland, leuving Sand Island to tho southward. These carthwrks wcro built during tho late civil war in anticipation of complications with foreign powers. Mr. Jenkins shows that it is to this distuibing action we must look for an explan ation of the cold waves which occur, on an average, every tight years as in 1289, 1837, 1845, 1855, 1803, 1871, 1870-and that for the next forty years tbe temperature will 1 below the aversge, as it has during thu last forty years been above the average. Mr. Schmidt was now himself on lire and by aid of his wifo extinguished the lira on his person, and as evening closed in tlio littlo burnt group stood like mourners over tlru smouldering re mains of what was once, their homo and for tune.
