Lack, of moisture Is not noccssailly a cause of urittlencss of tli. hoof, since tlio lioraes of the uVert have tlio strongest Imofs In the world, in apite of the excessiro dryness. A continued drouth is especially dangerous when it acts on n foot accustomed to abundance of water. Under tho action of water the horn cells absorb, increase in ie, and push each other apart. IJy its action, too, some of tho I gelatinous matter that builds up the horn is dissolved out, and when tho hoof is again allowed to dry, it has lost materially in its power of cohesion. Tho more frequent ly tho process of soaking and drying is re peated, the more hurtful it proves to tho hoof which becomes increasingly brittlo and liable to split up and break oil'. If, further, this tendency to brittlcncss has been inbred -XfTECT OF .through generations of horses kept in cli mates w hero the feet are alternately soaked by drenching rains, and withered tiy drying suns, the danger is proportionately increased, and tlio feet of such a raco of horses are es pecially liable to splitting and injur)'. It Is not habitual dryness that injures, it is the .nlt-ruatitns of rain and drouth. While upon this subject it may bo well to nolo that the evil effects of moisture may be largely warded ofTby smearing the moistened foot with some ,t impervious oily agent before exposing it to the drying process, In this way the moisture that lius been absoi bed by tho horn is retained, the sudden drying and shrinking aro obviated, and the horn remains elastic and compara tively tough. As it is often needful to soak tho foot in warm or cold water, or poulticis in cases of disease, it is all-important that tho above-named piccaution should bo constantly borne in mind, and that tho softened foot i should bo smeared throughout with some hoot ointment before it is allowed to dry ami harden. For this purpose nothing is simpler nor better than a mixture in cijual parts of wood tar and whale oil or lard. This may be smeared on tho foot every other day. In addition to tho changes of weather the frequent standing in rotting dung heaps, or in pools of decompntiug liquid manure, may be named as rallies of brittle hoofs. In tho dung heap theru is not only tho moisture and steam soaking and softening tho hoof, but there is abundance of ammonia (as, which is cipecially calculated to soften, dissolve, .and destroy the horn. Hottcu manure and putrid liquids, therefore, are much moro in . jurious than pure water, muddy pools, or wet clay. Again, the emanations of this kind are far from conductive to general health, so that thoy provo hurtful in two ways first, by .directly destroying tho substance of the hoof, and, secondly, ly reducing the animal vigor, tho power of digestion and assimilation, and tho power of secreting good horn. Standing in such deconposed organio matter is still moro injurious, however, when tho animal is conllncd to a stall or box, for here the injur! oua effect of inactivity is added to tho above namod conditions. - IHFjyHEAI CEOrV. .An Estimate for 1880 -The Total Product About 4so,ooo,ooo Bushels. Tho returs from tho great wheat growing States of Illinois and Iowa aro ijuito up to earlier estimates, but it is probable, when tho full returns of tho threshing in tlioso States aro summed up, that thu total product of this country will not exceed 45.1,000,000, as compared with the estimate of the Agricul tural Department for 1870 of 488,000000 bush vis. Tho export of wheat fr'in tho United .States lust year was in round numbers 1S.1 000,000 bushels. It is estimated that thu requirement crop mil lto .01,000,000 bushel. On this basis, and taking tho totil out turn at -15.1,000,000 bushels, tliero will r.main altout 181,000,000 surplus for export from tho wheat crop of 1880. Their hide aro thick, lint mellow and elastic; their hair is very heavy, ami much longer iu winter than that of most other breeds. They aro seldom sheltered in Scotland, where the cold storms of wiutur could scarcely be endured by cattle of ordinary constitutions. Obliged, as they often are, to sustain themselves through the most inclement season of the year on coarse and fret-bitten herbage, which is frequently covered with snow, they are sometimes re duced to a low condition at the beginning of spring, but they improve very rapidly as thu new grass comes on, and soon becomes fit for the butcher. Iu describing them Youatt saysi "They are straight ami broad in tho back and nearly level from tlfu head to the rump. They are round in the ribs and also between the shoulders and the ribs ami loins. They are broad in the loins without largo pro jecting hip bones.
