possession of a woman's breast it seems to In

this remark. Tuesday evening at a lato hour
as alio was resting in her room on tho second
floor of her residence, on Second street, be

in an instant as different from her husband's,

herself at once. There happened to be a large
heavy stick standing in a corner of tho hall

vidual camo up to where she was standing,

opprobrious epithets and calling her vilo
names. Mrs. Kaiser then told him ho must
leave the house at once. This ho refused to
do aud defied her and her club. Seeing that

sudden spring for tho man caught him by tho
collar. A strugglo ensued, when tho lady by
an extraordinary exertion of strength, picked
tho fellow up bodily and dropped him over

of fifteen feet, llio man lell with a dull,
heavy thud, and lay for live or ten minutes as
though he was dead. Ho had evidently lit
en his head and was rendered unconscious by
tho force of tho fall. hen ho recovered he
nicked himself un and without aavinc a word
walked out of tho houso. Mrs. Kaiser upon
nuking an investigation, found that the man
had walked into the front door, which sho had
left open in expectation ol her husbands re
turn, aud had ransacked tho pantry. He

not recognize him. l'or her coolness, her
bravery and her admirable defense of herself,
Mrs. Kaiser deserves tho thanks of this coin-

midst.

Vup much time in his charge, but was plain.

the different degrees of murder and w herein it
consists. The fury paid tho closest attention
to the Court, and w lieu ho hail concluded they
retired. Yesterday they came into court,
after Iwing out all evening and tho greater
part of the morning, aud gavo notice that they
were unable to agree upon a vedict. Tho
jury stood eight for murder iu tho second de
gree, and fsur for murder in the first. Itol
Tins waa somewhat elated at the result of their
deliberations. He was remanded below upon
the announcement of the result.
The MimiiKK Case. Probably one of the
dullest trials ever hod in our courts is the
murder case of J. W. Itollins, who was in
dicted by the Grand Jury for killing "Kelly
the Vag" on the 2d day of last August. Not
a dozen people were in attendance at the court
when the trial waa commenced yesterday af
tcrnoou at 1:30 o'clock. The folio iug jury
was empaneled: S. F. Siferd, W, 1). Double
blower, H. It. Long, If. Sylvester, Ellis
Walker, J. M. Goy, M. D. Clillam, W. D.
Metzser, Jasper Orchard. 8. M. Dyer, John
WauJ and L. Lewi. After being sworn,
they took their seat and the trial commenced.
Nothing of importance w developed up to
tho time of adjournment. District Attorney
Caplcs and Assistant District Attorney Mul
ley appeared for tho prosecution. Rollins
was represented by 11. , Thompson.

Thayer returned, without his approval, tint
bill granting the Orcgonlan Hallway Company

First, with the view of dispensing: equal and

to none. Second, there is a question of gravo
doubt whether a corporate power can bo con
ferred upon any corporation under certain
clauses in tho constitution which prohibits tlm
formation of corporations by special lawn.
Third, tho invasion of the rights ol local gov
ernment, which he thinks wrong. The O H.
& N. Co. has had a bill posted, It is said, by
special legislation. If so, tho Governor will
veto mat also. Alter tlio veto had been read,

Tyson argued in favor of passing tho bill ov, r
