Archer was poorly drossod, although

Snow Shoeing in Norway.

Ot David Swing, a writer in The

Of all this bodily exercises I know of,
thoro is nono in my opinion, that can
coma up to snow Hhneiiifj, as it is doiui
in Norway. Skating i nothing coin-
pared to this spoit. What can equal
the splendid suiiMition of flying acrosn
the deep snow at tho rate of many miles
an hour, without hardly moving a mus.
olet And then, giinij down hill, HiafT
in hand, no exertion necesxary, other
than to keep tho balance, while gliding
softly but s if tly onwurd. Unlike tho
Canadian snow shoes, these Shi (pro
nounced xbeo) of tho Norwegians aiu
often fully twelve feet long, curving up
ward at the prow, and aro not broader
than threo to four inches. Throughout
their wholo length they aro provided
with a groov-H for tho purpose of keep
ing them from slipping when going at
an angle down tall. Atuougli by no
means slow when used across level
giound, it is yet down-bill that they are
most etlective, tor tueir grett length and
their polished under-surface on the fro
zen snow causes a speed more like fly
ing than any motion I know of. The
inhabitants ot Telemarken, in the south
of Norway, are the rdoat efficient shi
runners; and at the annual competi
tions at Christiana, generally bear off
the prizes. At the competition there in
1879, one of these men leaped, accoul-
ing to a local newsaper, a distance of
thirty Norwegian alen, or fully juxty
