I claim to bo an ciort at all kindi of carriage work and horto-ihociutr. Soma people lay that a carriage-ironer cannot know how to hoe a horio. I can give you tlio natnci of hundreds of the bcit citircna of CJay county, Mp., vrho will tcitify to my capacity as a lio'rie-ahoer, and after you havo read about my method you can judge for yourielf. For the pait eighteen yean I havo been constantly ihocing hones, and have learned the ways of several Htates and Gtnadn, and 1 assert positively that there Is only ono way t; hoe a horse so that he will travel easy and at the same time keep tlio hoof sound. Some may say that all horses cannot bo shod in the erne way, but I claim they can. Allow me to describe the mithod I use, and I believe you will agree with me in the statement Jut made. If the following Initruslions aro care fully followed the result will be satisfactory in every case. First, I take a good slxtcon-inch rasp and rasp down the foot level, watching that tlio heels are not cut down too low. After tlio foot Is trimmed to the proper ihapo I use a knife to smooth It, and never cut tlio braces of tho foot, for they are the strength of It) and never use the knife on the frog, for it is the heart of the foot. Tho frog sheds oft onco in two or throo months, when tho foot ii In a healthy condition. The frog Is Intended for a cushion, and the la-gcr It Is the better. Whou horso trots, he always strikes the heels to the ground first, and if he hoe a large frog c.-.. posed to strike first it will naturally lessen the Jar to the log, and operate to keep fe heels well spread. On the ether hand if '. o frog Is cut out, what is left bccomci dry, o elry that it cannot be cut with a knife, ami the heels shrink together, After having trimmed tho feet, as I have tated, to tho proper site, I select a shoe just large enough to cover the foot, and then shape it to fit. Applying it to the hoof , I watch that the hoof is scorched only just enough to kow tf!e uuevenness of the foot, and then with a rasp or knife smooth true In this way I never fail to fit a shoo properly. If, the shoe ls 'fitted conrcctTy, the heels are always well spread out. If the shoes are too long, the heels will 1 drawn together, and, the foot being thus pinched, It becomes contracted, and results in a lame horso. Next, the shoe should always be concaved on the fore feet. Never put hind shoes on the foro (set. The shoe should bear only on the outer rim of the hoof, and watch that it bears equally all around and not simply on the too and heel. Il'tliese directions are fol lowed, the horse will never ke troubled with lameness In the feet, caused by Improper shoe, ing. If the shoe is not left on more then Ixty days, bruises or corns can not form in the hoof. Now, a word about driving nails and I havo dene. Nails should never bo driven high, and theu In six or eight weeks the foot will have have grown sufllcieutly to enable the sheer to cut out the eld nail holes.leaving sound hoofs. If the nsili, however, are driven high, at the next shoeing, the hoof will not have grown enough to cut down to the old nail holes, and the water and mud will soak Into these old holes and cause the hoof te become rotten and brittle. I houvstly believe that most of the readers of the Blacksmith and Wheelwriiiht will agree with me that the only truo way to hoe a horse is to follow the rules laid down boe, THE LOHQ-WOOI. HBEf.
