WILLAMETTE FAEM.ER: PORTLAND, .OREGON, AUGUST $! 1880. Where the Joke Was. On a Michigan Central train the other day won a passenger who had lost his right arm. Seon after tho train had pulled out of Detroit, ho began talking with those around him in regard to the political candidates, claiming to have served under both. This led somo one to ask him how and where ho lost bis arm, and ho replied t "I was down In the Wilderness. Wo wero charging tho enemy's line. A bullet struck my arm, crushed tho bone, and I fell Uncon scious. When I was restored to conscious ncss, I was in tlio bands of the Confederates Indeed, a soldier was going through my pock ets. When bo discovered that I was nlivo ho was about to bayonet mo but a corporal sprang forward, knocked tho wretch down and saved my life." Whilo bo was tcllinc this a man with bis left arm gone had risen from bis scat and camo nearer, and aa tho other finished ho bent for ward and said i ' ' "I am that very corporal! I remember tho incident as !( it happened only yesterday, I had you conveyed to nn old log bam over on theright." .. La, .. l.i. 1 I. a .. bracol Thank heavens Ihat 1 havo found y out. How camo you hcrot "I havo been to Detroit to bo treated for cancer, but there Is no longer any hope. I nm going homo to go to tho poor house, and thcro end my days. I haven't a shilling or a fnend." "And I am going to tho poor house as well," replied tho other. "I have consumption, mid as I am penniless, I must go and dio among paupers." Then they embraced somo moro and seemed to weep. One passenger fished up half a dol lar and passed his hat, and in five minutes a collection amounting to 8.1.50 was divided lie tween them. Kvcrybody said it was a shamo, and ono old man seemed willing to adopt them both if they would go on to Illinois. But they didn't they got off at Dearborn, and it was n quarter of an hour after beforo a com mercial drummer dared make tho statement that both chaps lived in Detroit, both lost their arms by accident, and that thoy had played tho samo game over and over on every railroad in tho State. Detroit Frco Press. How Lone Bees Live. A correspondent of tho Western Honey Bee gives tho following result of an experi ment made to ascertain the duration of life in beesi "I thought I would satisfy myself in regard to the llfo of tho bco Iu tho height of tho working season. I had a stand of tho littlo b ack bees, of tho genuine stingers, and nn tho morning f May 30th I killed tho queen, and by carefully looking through their hivo I found one black drono and destroyed that on tho evcn!n of tho samo day. I put in a coll for a yellow queen on tho 2d o! Juno. S'io was hatoheil ont and there were a few yellow bees iu tho hivo on tho 30th, in just twenty-one days from thy timo tho eggs wero deposited. On tho 7th of July, a few yellow bees wcro to lo seen playing around tho hivo, and on tho 13th day of July, just fourteen days from the timo tho yellow bees wcro hatched nut, a fow wero seen at work with tho black bees. Now any ono can seo that if tho yellow bees wcro hatched in twonty-ono days, tho last blick liecs wcro alt nut by tho 30th of Juno, and if the yellow bees went to work on the 12th of July, tho last of tho black liecs must "liavo gono to work on 1110 4111 of July, making fourteen days from tho time they wero hatched, unlets onb will goto work sooner than tho other. This stand contained nothing but black bees, when the black queen was destroyed; on the 18th of July, just forty nine days from tho time the black queen was destroyed, thcro was not a black bco to be seen about the hive. I opened it. Not ono was to le seen iusido. Now I Jcnow that the liecs will lire longer at other seasons of the year, ami I thought this would bo a good chanco to test tho height of tho working season. The hivo was examined every day during tho wholo time, so that no mistake mleht lo mado. From tho aboro It will be seen that tho lifetime of a honey bee, in the busiest working season is but fpur weeks or iwcmy-cigui nays. Titr.'following from tho Mark Lano Express should bo especially read by those w ho take exception to tho efforts being mado to improve our cattloi "Americans have done more for the rank and file of their common native breeds in tho lait five years, than I'nglish farmers havn done for their rank and file luring tho last twenty years. Of course tho United States cat tla we now re ceive are the best they have to send, quite the pick of tlicin markets; but five years ago they hal few, if any, as good to send.
