Tho country papers, tho Astorian and several other publications, having within the last aix week boen blowing about having received half a dozen ripo strawberries or words to that effbot. It's our turn to blow a blast on tho bugle horn. This morning tho Italian gar denors near tho car shops on tho oast aide picked from the vines in tho open air betweon throo und four pounds of largo ripe lucious strawberries anil brought them into markot whero they received fancy prices for tho same. When we remember that Christmas is almost hero and snow lies on the ground it seems strange that strawberries should mature and ripen in the open air. Bids Opened. During the past soason tho Clackamas Salmon Hatching establishment undor tho management of M'r. Hubbard, has been very successful. Over two and a half million eggs havo been htttohod and several schools of fry havo been turned into tho stream. In n few years our rivers will bo woll suppliod with this delicious fish should tho cannories run as lightly as during tho past season. Dying Cot. ' Tho haro and rabbit nuisance of tho Umpquu valloy is rapidly abating. A gontleman who is owner of two Gno Scottish stag hounds, and who has n great deal of sport in running hares down, says Ihoy aro rapidly dying off from diseaso of tho liver, and that in localities whero hundreds might bo found heretofore, thoro is scarcoly ono to bo seen now. Tho Governor, in accordanco with tho request of tho Port land Board of Trade, has appointed William MacCann, of Liverpool, Eng land, honorary commissioner of tho Board of Immigration of Oregon, to ro side in that city. Splrltnalistlo. At a spiritualistic seanco in this city a few evenings sinco a broad-shouldered skeptio struck an ombodiod spirit on tho noso, and tho result was an outflow of roal blood; so it appears that material ization involves tho life fluid, and per haps all tho norvos and tissues, just as if tho spirit had come to stay, Another result was tho life-liko remark made by tho spirit : "Ouch 1 Put out thorn light;" and likewise tho striking suggestion : "Perhaps you think becautu I'm a spirit it doesn't hurt, but it does." Fbyeiolon's Eoport. Tho report of the Physician of Oro gon Insano Asylum for tho quarter end ing Novembor 30, 1879, shows tho fol lowing admissions, discharges and deaths in that institution for tho past three months : Inmates received males 26, females 10 ; total 30. Amount paid Dr. nawthorno for caro and treatment of patients for tho quarter, $10,872 01. lis s)t m The Umatilla Mills. Our correspondent in writing from Umatilla, giving a description of enter prises and the surrounding country, was in error regarding tho famous Umatilla Mills. Ho stated that they wore undor tho direct management of Mowrs. Hurd i Weed, the lessees, which is an error. Tho mills are under tho management of Mrs. Frances Meyers, tho proprietress, and tho gentlemen above spoken of aro employed by hor to superintend the bus iness. Sho has no idea of leasing the mills, as wo learn from iter, and that it is her intention to conduct them in the future as in tho past, according to her best judgment. Thoy are tho finest mills in Eastern Oregon, tho brand "Umatilla Snowllake" boing a favorite in this and tho San Francisco market. Every modern improvement has been added, until it is now as complete as any on tho coast. Tho new stylo of wedding invitations will read: "Mr. and Mrs. Proudfoot re'4 spcctfully requests your presents at the marriago of their daughter," etc. NEW THIS WEEK7 Merchant's Exchange ASSOCIATION I Now Markot Building. rnB8iDK.fr ."....!. ..joiin iicciuckfji VICK rnESIDKUT M. 8.
