TWO CIIItlTSMAS ETEHt It was Christmas Eve, tho snow lay crisp and whlto on tho ground and the air was full of melody from tho ringing fclclgh hells. Crowds of people wcro hurrying along tho busy streets of n largo Eastorn city; tho loftlyand lonely, tho rich and poor of nil ages sex sex, mingled together in tho throng. A small boy, poorly clad, was press ing through tho busy crowd selling matches. Ho wns n lad of about ton or twclvo years of age, rather tall, with largo bluo eyes and golden hair. As ho passed on ho mot sovcral groups of children carrying skates; It was ovldent that they had been out skating in ono of Iho parks; ono group had Just passed him when ho turned to gazo after them, wishing that he was rich and could share in tholr sports, when ho heard tho voice cf a boy saying in a loud boisterous tone: "OK out of tho way, beggar, and let us pass," Tho match boy turned nnd saw boforo him a boy of his own age; from his dress and nppcarancc it was ovldent that ho belonged to tho weal thy class, nnd hy his side was a girl two or three years younger tlinn him- self, with long black curls and n pair of laughingblack eyes; both children wero richly dressed, nnd tho boy car ried, swung across his arm, two pair ol skates. "Don't speak so harsh, George," said tho girl, "see you liavo hurt tho hoys feelings." "Just as If beggars can liavo feel ings," said Ocorgo Hcornfully, us no pushed back tho poor match boy. Tho handsome fuco of the girl was for an instant clouded nt this harsh speech; she drew from her pocket a tiny purse, and taking from It a gold dollar hho handed It to him, saying: "Hero llttlo boy, to-morrow is Christ mas, so tike this for a Christmas pres ent." "Como Kiln, dear, Itisgotllnglate," said tho boy, who was ti fow steps in advance. Tho poor match hoy looked after them in astonishment; tho volco In which ho addressed tho girl was so dlirerent from what ho used a moment before. "Ho Is porlectly heartless," said tho hoy tohlmselfas ho passed on to his poor lodgings. Thus tho throe children mot on that Christmas Evo, tho ono so poor and tho other two so wealthy, what tho years will bring in tho futuro wo shall see. To explain who tho children wcro wo must go hack a fow years. Judgo Carlton was a very wealthy man, and had three pons, Guy, Gcorgo nnd Charles. 'When ho died ho loft tho hulk of his property to Guy, tho oldest, Gcorgo and Charles receiving tho portion of tho younger sons. Doth tho younger ones had married women of their father's choice, but Guy was married, several years before his fath er's death, to a country dumsol with whom ho had become acquainted during a visit to a friend. This mar riago ho kept concealed from his father, for had that proud man known of It ho would have disinherited him. "When Judgo Carlton died Guy was traveling In tho old world for his health; ho was summoned homo, but died a fow days after arriving. On his deathbed ho told his brother Goorgoof his marringonnd asked hi in to put his wlfo nnd infant son in pos session of his estate, Gcorgo promised to do tills!, hut had no notion of fullllllng his promise, for hy tho terms of his father's will, if Guy died without Issue tho estate would go to tho noNt oldest. When sho heard of her husband's death she came to tho city and tho presence of his Inhuman brother to plead for Justice. George only laughed at hor and told her that her marriage was only a sham. Hho told aim that It was not and showed him tho marriage certlllcate. Ho pronounced It a forged ono. In vain did tho poor woman plead for Justice for hereon; It was denied her; so she loft tho presence of George Carlton believing that her marriage was a sham. l'o a fow weary years sho earned a scanty living for hereelf and bon. When sho died hereon was lett In the largeelty without a single friend; he earned his living by selling matches, and It was him, Guy Carlton, that wo Introduce toour readers on this Christ mas Eve. Tho other two children wero his cousins, George Carlton, the son of Gcorgo Carlton who had de frauded his brother's heir of hi rights, and Ellouor, tho daughter ol Charles. Charles and his wlfo wore both dead, and their daughter was lelt to tho guardianship of George. George Carlton lived in a handsome brown stono resilience In tho imiM fashionable part of tho city, mid on that night wo tlrst Introduce them to the reader hogavo a Juvenile part to pleaso Master Gcorgo, tho son anil heir of tho house. After Guy had arrived nt his lodg logs ho was sent on an errand by i. P'.xrfeeamstrts, vho ws unable to gu out herself, and thogarmonlon which sho lintl been engaged must bo deliv ered that evening, so sho asked Guy to deliver It for her. Guy, who was nlwoys willing to oblige anyone, hur ried away on his ctrand, which took him through tho most fashionable part of tho city, on his woy ho passed tho house of Gcorgo Curlton. Tho blinds wero not closed and Guy conld see tho interior of tho drawing room, wiiero many children wcro assem bled, and tho center of admiration was tho sarao girl that had been 80 kind to him only a fow hours before. Guy rcmombcrcd that his mother had told him thnt If Justlco was theirs that this place would be their home, "nnd yet," thought Guy, "tho ono that calls this placo homo, dared to call mo beggar, but that beautiful black-eyed girl, hho was so kind to me, I wonder who sho Is; 1 will keep her girt to rnmeinher her by." A short tlmo after this good forluno camo to Guy; it camo in his way to do a small favor for an old pea captain, who "fell iu lovo with tho boy," as ho expressed it, and took him from his life of toil and carried him to Eng land, placed him nt school, where ho paid him a yearly visit. When Guy was 18 years old the Captain said, while on his yearly visit, "I liavo n presentment thnt I will novorteo you again, my hoy," for such ho called Guy, "and so I liavo mado my will, in which you aro my boIo heir." "Why do you think that you will novor seo mo nguln?" asked Guy. "Guy, my hoy, I liavo been on tho sea all my life, and I novor prepared to start upon a voyngo boforo but whnt I felt I would nrrlvo safely In port, hut this will ho my hut voyage, my vessel will go down and carry mo with her; romomber, my boy, theso furo an old sailor's wonN, nnd they will provo truo." "Don't go on this voyngo then," pleaded Guy, "you told mo Fovor.il years ago thnt you had enough to live comfortably on for tho remainder of your life." "No, no, my boy, you cannot kcepn fish out of tho water; I was born on tho ocean nnd on tho ocean I will die, when I cast anchor for good It will be In another world." In vain did Guy plead for his guar dian to quit tho sea, ho would ant glvo It up; ho saw him start upon tho voyngo nnd felt that ho had looked his last upon tho man who had been a father to him. Ho had heard of sailors' presentments boforo nnd ho believed them to bo true, nnd this one did provo true, for a fow mouths nftorward while tho vessel was cruis ing nmong tho tho East India Islands sho went down with nil on board. Guy was ovorcomo with grlof when ho heard that his guardians words had proved true, ho took passago on tho first steamer bound for tho East India, In hones that his guardian had been rescued, but ho was doom ed to dlsapolutmcnt, for not a soul was saved. After this, his education being fin ished, Guy took a tour of tho world, travellnglelsurely from placo to place. So at tho ngo ot twonty-flvo ho found himself in his natlvo city. A great many changes had tnkon placo sinco ho left thero fifteen years boforo; tho haunts that woro then to him familiar wore scarcely recognized now, tho faces thnt ho mot woro nit strange to him; his thoughts natur ally turned to that Christmas Evo so long ago, when ho was a poor match hoy, nnd ho wonderod what had become of tho Utile girl thnt gave him tho gold dollar. Tho socond day after his arrival ho saw an advertise ment In ono of tho dally papers that read as follows: INKOllM ".TION WANTKll' 01-' ONI! Mrs. UarkerV lot mg see, was not that tho namo of tho seamstress that I left my mothers trunk In tho earo of. I will go and see, although I had forgotten It until this notice brought It to mind," Thus mused Guy Carlton, as ho sat in his room nt tho hotel, where ho had road the mlvertleoment When Guy arrived at tho houso ho found bis Mirmlso to bo true; it was tho. same woman that ho had left his mother's trunk in charge of, but a surprise awaited him, for Mrs. Dar ker had after keeping tho trunk In her ctro for many years, felt a tie lro to sco what It contained, o she had opened It titid found tho marriage certitlcato of his mother, and all the letters that sho had received from her husband, and the certlllcate of GuvV birth. As Mrs. Marker had once been a seemstress In tho family of Judge Carlton sho knew all tho family quit. wen. hiio at onco know who Gu. was, so she had advertised for him. " When Guy learned that -hho hat' known tho family ho asked her somi questions about them, "I would Jus,t liku to seo Georgi Carlton misted, for he Is so proud niiii heartless. Guy, your father and Charles wero both gentlemen; Charles j married n great heiress, sho Inherit ed her wealth from an undo in tho nbcence of other heirs, but about n year ago, other holrs prosented them selves nnd proved their Identity, so Ellenor was left penniless except a small lucomo that sho inherited from her father, and that Is not enough to keep her, to she is obliged to work for her living: her heartless undo turned her out of doors, nnd young Gcorgo wai engaged to her, but deserted her In her hour of ruin. I hopo you will bo nblo to provo your Identity for I know you will givo Ellenor a homo which her undo refuses her," was tho explanation that Mrs. Darker gave Guy. Another Christmas Eve. A wed ding party Is tissemblcd in the draw ing room of tho brown stono resi dence, the bride ami groom aro Alie nor and Guy Carlton, and as they btniiil at the window after tho cere mony Guy tells his bride how he stood thero on tho pavement fifteen years before and watched her sweet child ish faca through that -aino window. When you gave mo that gold dollar I gavo you my heart In return," he said as ho drow her to his broa-t and pressed a klsstipon her lips. Sho smiled blushlnglyand nestled close to him, thanking Providence for sending her such a lunbaud In stead of tho proud, heartless George. Tho heartless undo and his sou now earn their own living and they liavo few friends, for peoplo remember how selfish they wero when they wero ncii and prosperous. Important to l'armere.
