Berkshire!. This is an Knglish breed, established many years ngo. 1 hey will lie rscognircil in the pens hy their uniformity In color, which Is black, with white marking in the face, on the feet, and the brush of tho tall. Occasional small spots of whito may be found elsewhere; but, while they nro not considered desirable by fancy breeders, they are in no wise an in dication of Impure blood. Sandy, or reddish brown spots, may alio occasionally be found, which arc (imply indications of a reversion to tho original color of the breed, which was, quite often, black spots on a sandy ground. Tho best typo of tho Berkshire, ns now bred, has a short and fino nose, slightly dished or curved upward, is wide between the cyct, has rmall and fine cars, standing very nearly erect, straight back, of uniform width from shonldcr to ham, short legs, and fine bone. Formerly, tho Bcrkshiro was not famous as a lard hog, but modern breeders havo greatly improved tho breed in this direction, if it bo nn improvement, until it is, perhaps, equal to any other in that partiou lar. me prevailing tendency among tlio breeders of Ikrkshlns has been toward this point for many years, and we now see but few of tho big-boned, heavy-eared, and cnor mourly largo specimens of the breed that was common ten or hltccn years ago. The m eight of the matured Berkshire of to-day is from .100 to COO liound. It Is, perhaps, the most active and muscular of alt our breeds of swine; and, whilo this has often been urged as an objection to tho breed, yet it is a nud ity that renders it especially desirable to fol low cattle a method of feeding much prac ticed by farmers in tho corn-growing regions. Nat. Live Stock Journal. A Stopping" Place. Tlio weary traveler has a comfortable rest when he arrives nt Tho Dalles, as there he finds the Cosmopolitan Hotel, Thos. Bono Spavin. The treatment of spavin consists generally in rcticati'd application of Spanish Hy, or of biniodidc of mercury (one part to twolvc of lard), or in tho application of the hot iron followed by blistering, A subsequent long rest, or liberty out of doors or on pasture, is essential. A certain stiffness of tho joint u ill always remain, and the removal of tho out ward enlargement must not be expected, especially when tho same is of long standing. Thcso townibiiM are situate! about seventy miles north and east of Walla Walla, and are reputed to contain many thousand acres of fine fanning land. Water is abundant and timber is found on tho streams. The N. 1. It. 11. runs through township 17 u,, r. 33 east Walla Walla Union.
