A GRANGEBS'S COMMENTS.
Editor Willnmotto Farmer:
Doing n regular render of tho P.vn
Mini I noticed, nnd wn.s very favor
nbly Impressed with tho article, ono
of n series, lately appearing lit your
pnper entitled, "How shall tho
fJrntigo bo inndn useful nnd powerful?
No. I."
Tho writer Is evidently a thought
ful and Intelligent man, nnd In tho
consideration of his subject ho tnnkes
numerous suggestions qulto nppropos
to tho question, nnd also tells sorno
truth, pnrtlculnrly whenhosnya "thnt
tho order of tho 1. of II. hns boon pro
ductive of much good," thnt "tho of
forts wcro mndo by individuals with
in tho order, nnd woro not prolltnblo
to them individually but procured nil
such articles (machinery, etc.,) for the
bonclltof tho farmers of tho Htnto;"
"thnt many dlfllcul.lcs lie In tho
wny of success, tho greatest of wliloli
1 found in tho1 Jealousy and timidity
of Individuals." Those, I say, nro
truths, and they nro perhaps forclblo
to extent tho author of them hardly
appreciated.
Tho farmers (at loast I do) know
that a wagon costing $K!0 to $175 In
tho '71 could bo bought for $10.") to
$110 In '"(!. A combined reaper nnd
mower was l!5 to J15 per cent, cheaper
and that tho whole scale of prices Is
proportionately reduced.
A year when rust has well high
destroyed our crops, when tho Scotch
Loan Co. Is foreclosing many mort
gages, nnd tho outlook Is not pecu
liarly for tho agrarian portion of tho
community, overy ono can uppreclato
this reduction, which Is owing, our
correspondent snys, to tho oiTort of a
fow Individuals within tho ordor,(yos,
to a very fow, you enn number them
on tho, lingers of one hand), who did
not dorlvo nny profit to themselves;
not to nny grcnt extent, they didn't.
In 1874 n corporation vnt organized,
with headquarters nt Portland, with
tho avowed purposoof acting as agont
to Import all artlclos and machinery
nocded by tho Oregon farmers. A
circular letter, oxplnlnlng tho object
of tho organization, was printed nnd
issued to Individuals nnd granges.
Articles of Incorporation, also explain
ing tho object of tho Incorportion,
wcro printed nnd issued and in duo
courso of tlmo tho "N W. S. S. nnd
Com. Co., P. of II.," oponed its stock
books, nnd stock subscription lists
wero circulated, and homo $10,000 In
stock was subscribed. Tho subscribers
woro nil mombors of tho granger or
ganization. Not n shnro of stock was
hold ouUlde. Meetings wero held
nnd nil stockholders that choso wero
represented. Directors woro elected
nil farmers, remember; n Secretary,
hiniHcit n farmer, was chosen, nod tho
organisation commenced business.
It was then in n shapo to buy ma
chiuory, to contract nnd bo contract
ed with. To conduct operations only
ono thing remained 1. v., tho grand
power that makes tho world go round,
money, capital. The Company had
neither money nor Its substitute,
credit. Kvory exertion short of ab
solute litigation (and that was Inter
dicted by tho principles of our order)
was employed to collect tho llrst as
hossinentofoO percent, upon thocap
Ital stock; u trilling sum was collect
ed, not near sutllcleut to put tho bus
luchs upon a working foundation.
What could bo done was done, and,
Anally to bo brief tho "Individuals
within tho order," some Hvo or six,
oeelng that failure was unavoidable
without other assistance than stock
subscriptions would give, camo for
ward and signed notes to J.add v
Tllton, thu First National Hank, and
othors.endorsed contracts with wagon
and machine companies, and alto
gether pledged their credit for near
If not quite $1,000 each.
Tho contract for machinery, every
contract made by tho company, wero
madu In tho name of tho company,
Tho only contracts that wero by any
possible construction prlvato wero
IIiom) promisory notes which raised
money to tloat tho company. After
two ycar duration tho purses of these
private individuals wero exhausted.
Tho stock hooks upon which they had
relied were unproductive. Tho low
price at which tho machinery was
sold to tho farmers loft no possibility
nnd left nn unincumbered field to tho
middlemen.
To tho gentlemen who so quiotly
enmo forward nnd without tho re
motest chnnco for self profit, pledged
their faith and paid their money to
carry tho Farmers' Co,, is loft tho sat
isfaction of paying tho heavy reckon
ing. Some of them hnvo slnco been
unfortunato nnd nro unablo to bear
their shnro In lifting tho notes, now
held byLndd & Tllton, tho Scotch
Lonn Compnny nnd various other
creditors, nnd tho remnlndcr will bo
compelled to pay their share. Tho
Compnny Is hopelessly insolvent:
there nro no nssots; nnd nothing Is left
out of tho ruins to pay tlieso over
zealous grangers tho nniount they
expended for tho good of their
brothers of tho order, except
tho un-
paid subscriptions to tho stock.
This I submit should bo paid by tho
stockholders, nnd paid liberally, ns
men of honor mon who understand
tho law9 of right, should pny. Did
Odd Fellows or Masons become bo for
getful of tho duties and obligations of
their order, nnd of tho commonest
lnw of right nnd Justice, they would
bo expelled, There Is no Just not
honest defense to tho liability of these
men.
Tho objects of tho Co. woro set out
so thnt "they who ran could read;"
they wcro printed in circular letters;
they wero open to tho Inspection of
overy subscriber, nnd nothing but
idiotic simplicity could hnvo been Ig
norant of tho printed paper that was
circulated.
Gentlemen, farmers, mon of honor,
why will you Isully your credit, tils
graco your honor, desert your com
panions of tho Grango In adversity,
and prove yourselves reccant to every
obligation that honor, good faith uud
common honesty Impose upon you?
What organization can b) formed
among you, with nny hopo of
success, if you exhibit no moro fideli
ty to tho order, no moro sonso of bus
iness obligations, nnd no greator hon
esty than will bo dlscloso If your In
nate sense of decency tells you should
bo douu voluntarily? No ono nsserts
that tho buslnus of tho Company was
conducted dishonestly. No ono has
over Inspected tho books, and conso
quontly few porhups npproelnto fully
tho enormous oxponsoof conducting
a hardware business of that magni
tude. Tho author of "No l" enn not ox
poet to build up many moro successful
grnngo business organizations unless
ho first instills into tho breast of my
fellow fnrmors tho ncccsity of meet
nil business obligations nnd of regard
ing their wprd ns being ns good ns
their bond. Tlioy must "commoncont
tho beginning nnd work up" a good
ways botoro they enn do business on
nny othor principle
If you will nllow mo spneo in an
other Issuo I will wrlto ngaln and
etnto why this ontorprlso was not
as it might, could nnd should hnvo
bcon ft grand success.
I sign myself, I hope,

Tho main roads here aro all torn
piked at great expense to bottlers.
Brother M. has already spent slxteon
hundred dollars to build roads through
his farm. Ho also has miles of under

they wish to sell nnd como to Oregon.
A very ploajsant family reunion was
held hero, nt which my husband's
brother and five of his sisters wcro
present. Most of tho oldor members
looked natural to him, but tho youn

where tho father nnd mother were
laid u fow years ago. They had lived
to see their thirteen children all mar

had not only reared their largo fami

besides. Loving words wero epokon
of them and tears shed In their mem

as mine had been to him, and I can
never forgot tho loving cordiality
with which they treated tho stranger

also visited one in her beautiful home

first noticed union lawns, in fact
fences nro not at nil fashionable here.
Their lawns extend to the street, nnd

Wo visited it sister In Mt. Vornon,

years old. Ho spent most of his tlmo
reading, and having always been n
reader nnd thlnkor, his mind was yet
vigorous. It had been long years
slnco I lind boon called "my dear
child," "sis," etc., but such expres

dear old man carried mo back with
pleasant memories to my childhood.
Ho expressed n wish that It might
not bo long till ho should bo permit

had "crossed tho dark river" n few
years boforc. My husband was raised

and wo wcro delightfully entertained

in which is ono of thoso ancient

nephews nnd nieces nt Mt. Gllcad.
In traveling through tho country
wo saw nt almost every other farm

of doors. In fact we thought wo had
got into tho homo of that article. On
inquiry we found thnt apples wcro
very plenty, which might not bo tho

plo wore making tho most of thorn.
Thoy wcro very good, but speckled
nnd wormy, and not qulto so highly

Wo saw n great many flno cows in
Ohio, most of thorn wcro grado short

by tho 6th of November as wo saw in
Oregon during tho wholo provlous
Winter. Tho wheat hero looked llko

Wo wont to Clovoland through n

Ohio by daylight, having nover dono

was obliged to go ovor it at nignt, us
our tlmo was so limited.
