Wool i a little off aiuce Monday, It ia
aaid San Krauciaco buyen liae been ahead of
tho Eaitern market, and that having lupnlied
tho iiuuicdiate want of manufacturer the
demand has alackod. Wo cannot givo, at
this lime, n Iretlcr idea of tho market than to
say it stands still, 'no receipts of valley wool
being had, of importance, and tho holders of
Uiatcni wool on commission, prefer to ship
to their California ngcnti, to selling hero.
Wo hear it stated that COO lnlcs of Kastern
wool sold lately for 23 cents ami ft small lot
ofry choico brought mcr that. This is
from J. It rnrrish'i) conitm rcial agency. Wo
nltohear that n Polls County wool grower
nold his clip on Tuesday, cxtrn choice,
for S.MJ cents and tho market may bo
stated as follows: Jlaitcrn, 20 to 2,1 cento,
vnlluy wools 2- to 2.' cents, with a littlo
advance on that for oxlrn, choice, and
Uiiitintm wool ranging tu high as 20 Ui 27
cents. As to tho futuro of tho wool market,
it is not easy to prodictn guess, Tho Kastcrn
market is said to bo firm, but not up to tho
San Pranciseo purchases, and it may bo that
thoso who have wool to sell cannot afford to
to tako chances by holding. Tho odvanco
in wool is already very favorablo to Oregon
producers, nnd wo must nil viow it with
aititfaction. Present prices nro fairly ro
munorativa. A Btronfj Llfo Insuranco Company.
Claowliero will bo found thu iwhortiscincnt
of the Paciflo Mutual Insuranco Company, of
California. This compiny has been ilolng
business in Oregon for twolvo yean, and is
known ns olio of tho strongest nnd most in-
llucntinl companies doing business in our
State. Tho Oregon branch of this company
is, as our rcadora will perceive, composed of
well-known Oregoniaiu. Wo paid a visit w
llioir now oflico. whloh has been recently
oponod, nnd which is neatly furnished. Mr.
A. 11. Covalt, general manager, lia been cor
nocted with this company sinco it forma,
tion, and ho has had such abundant expori
ence that wo f rooly recommend him to all our
readers. Tho number of policies lued by
Mr. C. amount to over COO in thi State.
Tho oflico is nt No. 102 First Streot, botwcc

bo pleased to sco any of his old friends at his
now hcadquarton.
Kennedy' Sheep Dip.
Mr. Kennedy, tho manufacturer of this now
sheep dip, whilo in Oregon mado arrange
ment to havo hi dip Introduced here and
in Washington Territory. Mr. J. McCrockcn
will In) general agent. Ho informs us that
ho shall manufacture in concentrated liquid
form, and from sulphur and tobacco. Ilo
finds, ho says, that ho will havo to manufac
ture a dillon-nt dip for this State than lio has
Ihjcii manufacturing for other Slate. I lu lias
concluded to put on tho market here in tho
coming year .10,000 gallons of his dip. Mr.
Jacob l'razicr of Pendleton, has contracted
for enough of this dip to dip 12,000 head of
sheep thrcu times each, A number of othor
lirgo rhoop breeders havo also contracted for
largo ipiautltica.
Asparagus.
You ought to havo an asparagus bed in
your garden, and it is high lima you sot
aliout making it. Of courso you like aspara
guo; everybody does, ft Is delicious; it is
healthy; rhcumatio pcoplbaro sid to derivo
gent Iwnellt from its free use. I am not going
to toll j on how tn cook it, that i not my
business, but I can toll you how to ralso it.
Haven't won bod, ten fout long and six feet
wide, Hint furnishes nil thu asparagus wo nso
ilia fnmily of nix, and somo to giwiaw.iy to,
tho neighbor who think it too much work to
make asparagus bods in their own gardens?
It Uko.i some work to prepare tho ground
prorcrly for asparagus, but when tho lied is
uiioo mado it will but twcuty.llvo years.
Mark off n bed of the ilwin.il nijo In tho
warmest, mellowest part of thegirdcn, throw
out nil the null to tho depth n( two feet; then
t.d.o half tho mil thrown out, and mix it with
tho same amo it of good compost, and for n
bed ten feet lung and six feet wide, mix in ft
paok of refuse s.ilt, shovel tho mixture baak
into tho bed, let it lay three or four thy, and
then plant thu anvil. Sow in drills, eight
Inches nprt. Whin tho plants nro well
started, thin out to eight inches apart in the
row. Kicn frco from wcwU dnniy tho en
tiro season. Wjioii tho tint Iroat come in the
full, cut thu young plant down to tUoground,
and i-owr tho bed with six inches of com.
poat.
Next spring add n half peck of salt to tho
coutpoM, niul work it into the bed, caro being
taken not to injure thu root of tho young
plant. Itepeat thi drvsaiug of compost and
salt ccry jear. An occasional drcuiug of
limo nnd ashe will le beneficial. Do not
gather any tho lint jear, and cut only a
moderate quantity tho second year; the third
yiar ami afterward you may cut until it be
gin to apiudle. Do not cut tho young stalks
until they aro six or seven incite out of tho
ground, then cut with a slanting cut ecn
with, or just below the surface,
Tbo Correct Way to Handle Sheep.
There la a right way and a wrong way, a
hard way and nn easy way, an awkward and
a skillful w ay, to catch and handlo sheep. A
great many men will soite the sheep by the
wool on tho back with both hand, ami lift
tho animal clear from the ground by tbo
wool only, llibbaroust Let soma giant
grasp you by the hair of your head and lift
you from the ground by tho hair only I Would
you not struggle and squirm worse than the
muto sheep doe when liftod by tho wool!
Aud would not there bo a complaint of a
sore head for a week or two? If you do not
Iwliovo it try tho experiment. o havo
slaughtervd a great many sheep in yean past,
and when removing tho pelts of such sheep
as had been handled by tho wool, wo never
failed to observe that bcueath the skin
whciecr the animal had been caught by tho
wool, blood had settled. Iu many inatances,
the skin had been separated from tho body so
that inflammation was apparent. We have
knowu proprieton of sheep to be so strict iu
regard to handling them, that they would
order a helper from the premises it he were
to catch n shcop by tho wool on any part of
tho body, Somo owners of shcop direct their
helpers tliuni "When about to catch ft
sheep move carefully toward tho ono to m
taken, until you nro sufficiently near to
spring quickly and soizd" tho lcist by tho
neck with both hands, grasp tho brisket,
nnd lift tho sheep clear from tho ground,
Tho wool must not bo pulled. If tko sheep
ia a heavy one, lot ono hand nnd wrist bo
put around tho neck nnd the other prewl
ngalnst tho lump." Vo hnvo always han
dled shcop iu tho w-ay alluded to. Wo noicr
grasp tho wool. Olhcn selzo tho sheep by a
hind leg, thou throw ono arm about tho
body nnd tako hold of the briskets with ono
hand. Hut owes with lnmbs should ncNcrbo
caught by tho hind leg, unices thoy nro linn
died witli cxtramo caro. When sheep nro
handled roughly, cspccinlly if their wool is
pulled, tho small bruises and injuries will
render them moro wild nnd tnoro difficult to
handle
Horso Disease.
IMitor Willamette Parmer:
Tho Independence Hivcnidc, of Polk
