Soattlo Post. Play unci Hard Worlc I have sen - n amateur chess player so infatuated witli the game, which he orig inally sat down to as a relaxation, that he became for months a lclim of insomnia, lie cat rial the whole chess-board, set out in various difficult problems, in his brain, if I may use such a simile, studied moves on going to sleep, dreamed of them, woke with the solution o!ved, was sick and feeble and irritable all next day, followed his usual occupation with lan guid ability and interest, resumed hi play at night with excited but not recruited determination, got more and more sleep less, and at last failed to sleep altogether, i have known more than one similar il lustration in whist-players, and have seen the result of these to-called recreations end in the most sad physical disaster, when the pursuit of them has been made a matter of living importance, and when the player has ever bad in his mind that pitiful if. "If I had-dono this or that 1 1 I had made that move on the board If I had played that card If I had made that stroke, how would the case have been?" It matters little whit the anmer to the qutstion may be whether it be that by such a move, curd or stoke, the game would hac been lost or von; the perp'exing doubt is there to annoy, and it keeps up an irritation which imperceptibly wears Otit the animal powers and does permanent injury to life. You see men while still they are actually young grow rapidly like old men under this supposed recreative strain. They grow prematur ely careworn, prematujely gray, prema turely fixed in idea and obstinate in idea, angry at trifles, baffled by trifles, and, in a word, young senilities. Dr. Iknumin W. Exporting Grain to India. An American m ssionary, stationed for several years in ln1n, has written a letter, suggesting that a profitable market can now be found in that country for grain of any kind. The natives subsist chiefly upon rice. Only the rid) men of the country and Europeans are consumers of wheat. One reason for rice being the principal food is its cheapness compared with wheat or corn. Up to five years ago only a little wheat was grown, and that was for home consumption. Nice was so plentiful and cheap that grain could not enter into competition with it, This is seen from the fact that when it was 'ound that the foothill country of the Himalayas was favorable to wheat cultivation, it was grown for eiport to Kngland. The pro Suction of wheat (or this purpose increas ed very rapidly until thn drought ol two yeaisbgo, followed by the famine. Then the exportation Hopped, it being required to take the place of rice, the staple food of the natives. Until the drought, India was becoming a formidable rival to the United States in supplying the English market with breidstuffj. It is not prob able that India will become a regular customer for American grain, but the chiel importance to be attached to the present condition of affairs is, that for two years at least, there will be little or no export d "heat from that country to England. Tho San Francisco bulletin of ilay 21st says; Tho Portland JIkh of tho 1 1th instant has n long nrticlo upon the unprecedented growth of that city during the past year. It is stated that mora than ono thousand houses wcro erected thero 'during tl3 previous twelve months. Such nn incrcaso in residential property must mean an addition to tho population of at least ten thousand persons. Wo know that Oregon has gained wonder fully by immigration during tho past year. Eastern Oregon is rapidly settling up, and it is that faot that in part led to tho Indian wnrof last Summer. If tho growth of Portland is in proportion to tho increased population throughout tho State, that city is much to bo congratu lated upon tho progress made. Much of tho recent immigration to Oregon is duo to tho oxhibiU mado nt tho recent oxpositions. Tho pooplo havo not hid their light under n bushel, but havo taken pains to nuko known tho re sources of their State. Thero is ovcry reason why Sail Fran cisco should tako nn interest in tho growth of Portland nnd tho Stato of Oregon generally. Au incroaso in pop ulation thero means additional pros perity on the Pacific Const, which reacts in a largo degreo upon this city. Tlio pait year has also witnessed n largo amount of railroad building in Oregon. Narrow-gauge road havo boon con structed to transport groin to tido water. Of Admiral Amnion, who has cone to Paris to represent this country in tho conference respecting tho projioaed Niu nruguan inter oceanic- ship canal, tho following nnocdoto irt told : Soon after tho California fovcr broko out tho Ad miral, then Captain Auuncii, was or dered to tako command of tlireo or four hundred recruits and convoy them from New York to California, by way of Cen tral America, llesidcs theso men, tho Vessel was crowded with women and children on tho way to join husbands nnd fathcis in tho land of gold. Six days out from Now York tho sailors showed symptoms of insuborbination, nnd finally mutinied outright, tho ship's crow joining in tho rovolt. Tho dip. tain lost control of his men, nnd tho suspcuso that followod was agonizing. Suddenly, boforo tho mutineers had n chanco to ngrco upon tiny concert of ac tion, tho young naval olliccr apicrod on deck in full uniform mid ordered his re cruits to their place, counseling thu crow in tho meantime to return to their duties. Tho leader innocently ordered him to ntcp down from there, "then" being tho (garter-dock. lie did ntcp down ; a growl of triumph went up from tho iiisubordiniitis, and n, hhuddcr of horror ran through tho passengers, who had hoped against hope that tho will of one man could control tho threatening utorm. Then Captain Amuiuii walked quickly forward, took n picco of chalk from his ixxskct, nnd dmwing 11 lino acto.Ti tho deck, said, in his epiiot way, Unit ho would idioot tho first man who cros.i"d it. Then lio draw out a pistol and waitod tho ramie. A vhout of do rision went v und thu loader sprang forward with an oath, only to fall shot through the heart ; ho was followod by anothir and nnothor, both of whom shared thu wimo fate, tho threo bodies forming nn ugly barricade. Tho quiet bravery of tho man, tho promptness and uncrriug aim, coupled with his vested authority, told on tho mutineers, and soon tho rovolt was over, tho loaders in irons, quiet restored and tho Uvea of hundreds of passengers saved.
