grass is tlio Inst apcctaltty of interest
to thoso seeking a variety of grass that
will best Btantl tho test of trial upon the
ordinary uplands ofitho I'nctflc coast.
This namo of " Mesquito " seems to bo
a local namo, applied by tho Mexicans
to ono or moro varieties of grasses nu
tlvo to tho dry plains extending from
western Texas into Arizona and which
is not yet sufllciontly known outsldo of
theso districts to havo a placo in our
classified forage plants. Hero in Ore
gon Just at present there seems to bo
confusion and tho velvet grass (holcus
lanatm) which hns been on trial In va
rious portions of Oregon for the past
ten years or more, Is now being bought
and sold by farmers to whom it is now
oh "Mesquito" grass. Now as it ran do
no good to pastoral interests to con
tlnuo to sproad a mistake of this kind,
If it bo a mistake (and I know it is In
Homo cases) tho sooner wo havo a clear
understandlngof tho Identity and qual
ities of mesquito grass tho better. 1
think it hardly possible that tho velvet
grass and mesquito can bo identical.
Thu former grass was first introduced
in tho iclnlty of Buloin by Mr, J. C.
Clark tho tannor, who received it and
orno seeds of ryo grass In a letter from
his father who Is or was a farmer in tho
'lilo of Man, nnd who sent thoso two as
of tho best varieties of gratses cultiva
ted In that country. From Mr. Ulurk,
Mr. Jacob Capllngor got seed; from
him Mr Charles Hwoglo got a start,
und tho latter distributed to very many
farmers both thoso kinds; but as tho
ryo grass was tho biennial variety, tho
velvet grass living longer and spread
ing moro easily by reason of its light
needs, it has continued to spread while
tho ryo (jrass (realy thu best for rotation
on wheat lands) hint measurably disap

This winter mesquito la likely what
wo call poverty gnu, variety of arls
tida. tJow,Mr, KUItor, this extract pomts
to ajnumber of grnsscB called mesquito,
notable as tho best for Hhccp pasturo in
tho dry hot plains of western Texas
where tho prickly pear finds a congeni
al home, and where Its' rlpo fruit nnd
tho beans of tho mcequito trees (mfmo
ku alqarobio-lund glanilulosu) forms re
sources of dependence to tho herds
man for stock feed, and should for tlmt
reason engago tho largest attention of
residonlseabtof tho Cascade mountains
who desiro to replace forage plants that
aro disappearing from their ranges,
not believing that tho bamo grass which
as velvet grass finds Its best condition
on the hcaward sldo of the coast moun
tains, Is a good grass for tho moist soils
and atmospheres of tho tall fern lands
of tho foot hills and mountain valleys.
I would bo glad to oxchango sample
seeds by mall with uny reader of the
Faiimek who thinks ho has tho truo
mesquito grass. J. Minto.
Note iy the Emtok. Wo havo
furnished Mr. Minto, slnco tho above
was written, with twospeclmensof so
called mesquito grass, viz. somoof that
raised by Mr. John Simpson on tho
Sulslaw, und also a specimen of that
raised by Mr. Levi Bartlmas, on tho
North Santlam, In Marlon county. Mr.
Win. Knight, of Cunb, also writes
that ho has sent us a box of the grow
ing grass, such as grows there under
that name.
FituiT-TitEE 8wiNM,Kit. Wo learn
that a man named Hammond goes
about tho country selling trees and
shrubbery which ho claims aro cholco
and now varieties, from eastern orCaN
ifornla uurseries, whereas ho purchase
treos of poor growth or our home nur
sorlcs, and without caring for varieties
sells them at enormous prices. A cor
respondent writes us that this man
bought 1100 trees at Vancouver, bought
a lot of red cedars at East Portland
(and sells thorn $2.00 to $5.00 each) also
other trees thoro. Wo haven't much
pity or sympathy for people who will
lot a stranger bilk them in this way,
for any person with common sonso
should know better.
