efforts wero so poorly seconded by them,
and they so exaggerated the dangers and dif

finally he aet out unescorted on a trip that
was to last thirteen months and be full of
vicissitudes. He was somewhat aided at the
outset by discovery that Oapadn rioot, do
Sto. Marie, in his route of 1S15, had proceed

The Bussian Geographical Society has a
scheme lor reaching the Pole not altogether
unlike that proposed by Captain Howgate,
but by a different route. Tbe scheme was
elaborated some time ago, but has never yet
been put into practical operation. It was
proposed to send a ship irom Cronstadt to
Spitsbergen and keep as near as possible to
tbe meridian of forty degrees east from
Greenwich. A colony was to be formed on
the northern extremity orspitxbergen, or on
one or the adjacent islands, about latitude bO
degrees north. There is no difficulty In
reaching this point in a favorable summer
and tbe ship would discharge her cargo and
return as speedily as possible. It was not
intended to attempt the journey to the Pole
in summer, but to leave it for the winter,
when tbe ice would furnish a solid footing
for the explorers. Several monthB would be
spent from the time of the ship's departure
in preparing the men for their work aud ac
customing them to the severities and pecu
liarities of tbeir new borne. They were to
have daily exercise with sledges, and it was
confidently believed that tbey would find
plenty of borgs and floes in their neighbor
hood to practise upon with the various in
struments necessary for Ice travel.
Tbe expedition from the colony to the
Pole was to consist of ten sledges, with six
men tc each sledge. The distance to be
travelled may bo roundly estimated at 50
miles, divided into ten stages or fitly miles
each. At the end of the first stage one sledge
is sent back a portion of the provisions
upon it having: been consumed and the bal
ance deposited in tbe ice in a cacAethat
would be secure agtiinst tbe assaults of Arc
tic animals. Tbe second stage ended the
second sledge is sent back; at tbe end of tbe
stage the third slidge returns, and so on.
until, at the end of tbe ninth stage, but a
single sledge remains. As tbe returning
aledges are not heavily laden, and will fol
low tbe road already made over tbe Ice,
several men can 1 retained frouj them, so
that the crew or the tenth sledge msy consist
often or twelve mon. This is tbe party
which pushes forward to the Pole, remains
as long aa may be necessary for scientific
purposes, and then turns lis face and steps
to tbe southward. On tbe return trip it fol
lows tbe route of tbe advance, and rellee
upon tbe deposits of provisions which were
made at tbe ends of the different stages.
It was only a few years ago that awlne
breeders were vising with eacn other for tbe
greatest weight of carcass; bnt this is now all
changed. Hof thai will weigh 500 pounds
are sold at lass price per pound than those of
230 to 300 pounds. Tbe market in England
baa long favored light weights. London is
chiefly supplied with jjlgs of lees than 200
pounds weight. And tbia tendency of the
market to pigs well fatted but of small
weight is Just what tbe farmer should en
courage, for It is exactly in toe line of his
in ter eat. It coats more (o make tbe second
hundred pounds of a pig than tbe firs!, t n I
still more to make tbe third hundred
pounds, and so every pound added become
awe expensive. Wallace' Monthly.
