During the past nwt we 1itp rompletrd an arrugenieQt thtl plicv the Willamette Farkkr above all cnaipotlMoa In Is especial field of Journalism, and In therefore of lui pomnce (o fio frral'up intorests or the who!e State. We bare pm-chaned of Mr. Mart. Brown the subscription lits auil ao c ante i a wtll aa the entlm good will aid b utness of tho Oregon Cktfttrafor, which ends its career with the Uue of this rek, and hereafter will bo consolidated with this pip r, the subscriber of thi Cultivator rtv CMng in the future the Willamette Far kr as continuation cf their subucripiion to th other paper. Events clearly demonstrate, what we have always averted, that this replcn aflonJs room for only one Agricultural Journal, and that 1 of conrse the Willakrttk Farmer, that Ert Ltd the field, which Rave is poi tion and icCucnce no rival could cxptct to equal. Our friends of Albany and Linn county deserve credit for the patriotic and heroic etfons they have made to support their home institutions, and we have always felt respect for their pride in so doing, but we remind them that the Willamette Farmer has no merely local character, bet belongs to all Oregon, equally, and If they will Rive us their support and assistance to mske tho creat county of Linn the greatest agricul tural county In Oregon known by corres pondence, we will convince them that they need no botteradrncate than this paper. Uniting Flax for Fiber. We have mnde frequent references to ths success achieved byIeesrs. Jesse Parr-fan and Charles Miller, who live near Jefferson in this county, in raising Dutch flax for fiber. They have car ried on this cultivation for two years, and last year they pnt uji a mill to work, the straw, or flax, after being suf ficiently rotted, into lint and tow, to be manufactured into thread, twine, etc. In connection with their enterprise we have made frequent reference to Mr. Akin who came out from New York Stale two years ago, where he had had life-long experience in growing and working flax, and lie lias given us to understand that Mr. Crane, a manufac turer, would bring to Oregon extensive machinery for the manufacture of shoe thread, twine, etc, being satisfied that Oregon could raise a superior quality of of flax, and that this coast offers, a good market for such merchandise. About six months ago Mr. Crane and his machinery arrived in California, and being impressed with the fact that San Francisco offered the best market for his goods, and supposing that Or egonwonld raise the flax to supply him, he put his machinery in operation there. Mr. H. M. Crane is now in this city and seems to recoguize that he must offer some guarantee to the people of Oregon that he will use the flax they produce, and that the only suffi cient guarantee will be to put his ma chinery at work among us so that we can see that the demand for our pro ducts will ;! permanent This he fa willing to do when satisfied that the people here will produce the stock of lint and tow necessary to keep his ma chinery at work. Mr. Crane exhibits samples of most excellent shoe thread and different sorts of twine manufactured in California, at Ills mills, out of Oregon flax. He agrees with all the rest of the world in pronouncing onr flax equal to the best raised lu any country, and superi or to any raised elsewhere in the United States. Messrs Parrfah and Miller have made many and thorough exier imenta in connection with rafaing flax far fiber that are of great value to all interested, they having not only raised the flax and made It into tow and lint, but they have spent $200 in sending abroad specimens of the same to Ire land and other flax-wising countries, always receiving the most unqualified endorsement of its excellence and qual ity as equal to the very licit. Those who know these gentlemen need not le told that they are respected as men of integrity and very reliable charac ter. They sent sample of their flax to the Centennial Exposition, and received the medal for the same. The induce ments are considered by them puflicient to warrant them in continuing the cul tivation and working of llax on a large scale, and they expect to be able to sup ply Mr. Crane with perhaps half the stock he may need. They claim to liavo already found ample remunera tlou for the labor and money they have expended and arc anxious to have oth er men, who have land suitable for flax culture, take hold of the business in earnest, so as to secure the erection of another flax mill, lifco their own, which would be sufficient Inducement for Mr. Crane to bring his machinery to Oregon, and probably to Salem, and institute a branch of manufacture that will snrely grownnd spread In the fu ture until Oregon shiJl lecomo famous for the manufacture of flax and linens on a large settle. In presenting this matter for tho con sideration of tho farmers of Oregon wo call attention to tho following poluts: 1st. It is proved beyond question that Oregon is au excellent country for the production of flax, and that the fiber of flax raised here ranks with the best known in Ireland, while the amount produced to the acre Is also large. 2d. Messrs. Pnrrfah and Miller have demonstrated this excellence aud have by individual enterprise established that it can be raised at a profit to lie manufactured into lint and tow for shipment to the East. 3d. The Pacific coast offers n home market for manufactured thread, twines and cord, that we ought to pro duce because we can raise the staple and command witter power nud labor to manufacture it. The Importance of Inaugurating home manufactures need not be dwelt upon, especially when we !& such advantages for production of the s,'aplo to lie manufactured. In conclusion: Spring will soou be up on us,and the season has been so favor able for the advancement of all kinds of work that it offers especial advantag es for the commencement of flax cul ture on u large scale, r as large a may lie necessary, sufficient nt least to in duce Mr. Crane to bring his machinery among us and become identified with our pro5,tir!tv. Uo faattxiuus iv knew what certaintyjthe ptospect affords, and there must be a mutual anxiety on the part of the producers of Oregon to es tablish an independent reliable iiome market for the encouragement of so important a product, that not only promises to amply reward the produ cer, but will initiate a system of man ufactures that will grow and increase until our State mast become in the fu ture a rich and famous manufacturer of linen goods of finest texture, as well as the coarser articles now talked of. Since writing thenbove,we have had a conversation with Mr. Crane nnd he informs us that our own State offers an extensive market for the best quality of shoe thread, needed in the construc tion of salmon nets on the Columbia river. There nets have to be made of the best thread, costing over one dollar a pound. We are astonished to find out the exteut of this trade, right at our own doors, fur a low estimate pat upon the value of the thread used in these nets, that have to lie replaced each year, shows that the annual out lay fa fully $250,000, and some place it much higher. We will do well to save this money to build np our home in stitutions, that now goes to enrich the manufacturers of Belfast, Ireland. When we take into consideration the increase of the fisheries, here and at all other points on the Pacific Coast, it is safe to say that by the time we can sup ply the demand it will amount to a million of dollars per annum. The demand for bagging twine will also create a large business; Salem Mills use over a thousand dollars' a year, and the demand on the coat, which must increase with the produc tion of grain and wool, already amounts to nearly $200,000. So our flax-raisers will see that the field is large nnd they have only to go in to possess it. Another important feature of intere-it to our towns and those who seek labor, is that the establfahmeut of manufac tories among us to supply theae increas ing demands, will create occupation for many young persons, and be of great benefit to both town and country. iJKsTOcenvK Kibe at McMissville.
