Hunt, Lecturer of State Orange, having lately-attended the in stallation of grange oflleers nt East Portland, gives u an interesting ac count of her experience with tlio Pa trons of Multnomah county. The oc casion was the installation of oflicors of Multnomah Grange, which holds its meetings at East Portland and its in terest was heightened by tho fact that members were also in attendance from Acme Orange, West of Portland, and the officers of that grange were also in stalled, making it a double ceremony of installation. The grange was called to order by blaster Gyrus Buckman; there were two State Deputies present, Plympton Kelly, or East Portland, and TV. II. Shipley, of Oswego. Tho offl cers of Multnomah Grange wore in stalled by Bro. Kelly, anil thoc or Acme Grange by Bro. Shipley. The Installation Services being concluded, the assembled friends, to the number of about soventy-five, partook of one of those sumptuous feasts which the la dies of the grange tire so capable of providing, and which the fraternity knows so well how to disioso of. We al ways get '"stalled ' when we attempt to describe these grange festivals from hearsay, and all tho catisfaction wo can feel is the certainty that tho:clio partake of them are never able to iind words to express tho great enjoyment of such occasions. From the cmb.irass inent our lady friend was under, and tho caso with wh'ch words came to iter conini mil until she tried to do justice to tho. dinner, we conclude that 3Iult nomah hospitality was to well and gen erously exercised that it fully rivalled that of the Waldo llill, where Mrs. Hunt is heielf a generous hostess. After the feast the Patrons were not too full for utterance, and besides a no-doubt excellent speech from the Lecturer of the State Grange, of which however, wo could get no report, there were other speeches made by Bios. A. J. Dufur, II. Ilan-oti, W.H. Shipley, Jacob Johnson. There was had, in fact, a most pleasant tin?; Multnomah Grange is fully alive to all its reion-i-bllities, and Its members seem a pros perous community, thriving by tictivo la l o", favored by n good market c!o-o at home. We did not get the INt of oill-i-er-j, but doubtless that will tomo in due lime Transportation-Co-cperation, Etc. liD. WiiiLAMi:TTi:KKMi:n: Inyouijof tho iieeiIly or buIIdhiK moio paper or tlio lth Inst., there arc to many Ideas of importance to tlio pros perity of our Stato advanced in tho tjovoral articled entitled "Cheap I mi im portation," " (.'o-operallilu," "Jtiver traneportation," A.c, that I liavo con cluded to vent mi; a few rumbling re marks on 01110 nf llieiii topics that way not bo allogelher void of Interest to you and your readers. It Is evident i to every careful otaotver that agricul ture Is the great underlying element of prosperity to tho Stato of Oregon. Thnt her wheat producing valleys are n sur er Index of emufort, Independence and prosperity, than tho gold Holds or Cal ifornia; that her hunch-grass hills and valleys for tho production of wool, beef, mill horses far exceed in that which goes to make up tho rail wealth and Independence of n State, nation or a peoplo tho auriferous districts of Ne vada or Arizona. Tho (lrst great efforts of merchants, manufacturers, bankers, shippers, and transportation companies, us well as the efforts of our political economists, should bo to foster tho productive ca pacities of this great industry and tlx Its prosperity beyond a contingency, within our State But while these assertions will, we apprehend, lie admitted as f.icts by most of your readers, still it is obvious to every unprejudiced mind that agri culture, although nioro oxtensive in its scope, and of vastly greater Importance to our people than any other single industry, is equally dependent upon capital, manufacturing, and transpor tation companies, for a healthy growth and permanent prosperity. If wo ex pect to forward this desired object, it will not be enough for each searate interest to work solely for itself, regard less of all others, but all theo interests must harmonize and co-operate to se cure a prosperous community, The tine Interest of the producer lie-, in securing tho services of capital, In other co-ordinate branches or industry, at a fair rate, for while the farmer de mands for the Use of his capital and la bor a reasonable return, ho mut recog nize tho rights, of transportation com panion, manufacturers, and other- who move his products or manufacture them to also receive fair compensation for mone. and labor. How to secure this just equilibrium of society, and of the "various trades ami occupations. constitutes the great problem of politU cal economy. When thi-. just equilibrium is dis turbed and part of the capital and labor of a country is in opposition to any oth er pari, the same condition of ill health prevails in the community as in the physical nvin when the system is dis organized. If the producer can com pel the transportation company to car ry his products at less than cost, it is an unfair state of things; if the transpor tation company takes advantago of cir cumstances to fleeco tho producer, thnt is mSn unfair; tho best intent of tho community will be advanced if we can bring about n just and equal condition of commercial relations by which all can bo insured reasonable prosperity. During the past five years wo have, as a rule, seen freights on tho Willam ette river carried nt rates ruinous to the steamboat owners. Tho O. S. S. Co., it is said, lost at least $.30,000 per annum while operating their steam boats in opposition to tho first transpor tation and looks comiany, and the lat ter company also must have Inst heavi ly. Tho people, of course, have had tho bcnctli of cheap freights on the Willamette, but tho naturnj result, as was to bo expected, lias of late been a combination of ail tho conflicting trans portation interests against tiie pro ducers, who in their turn nro heavy losers. During lato years I have no ticed that the Wii.i.amutti: Fahjieh has contended that the peoplo could al ways afford to pay a fair rate for ser vices rendered them; that transporta tion below living rates would bring evil consequences, and has urged the neces sity of supporting the line thathad se cured them fair charges urn! :j will ing lo guarantee them for ttio future Events how that would have been the true policy. Suddenly the so-called monopoly has been confronted with an opposition, and in tho effort to crush it out lias gone back to the policy of charging ruinous ly low Heights; al-o, nodoubt, desirous to prevent tho fanners from building more boats and declaring themselves independent of existing transportation line?. 1 want to face this mutter fully and boldly, and having presented this subject plainly, .showing or trying to show impartially to nil, I clo-o with this Inquiry, which I hope will bo hon estly entertained and lullyvanvas-t.il by ill persoiin interested: Is it not possible to'-ecurohuch terms with tho tiausportatlon lines on this river, that the tanners win 11 relieved hieamijoni-i, wcuriiiK mi uioiumve-j rodbouablc freight chnrcc", and Insiir inp tho tr.in-j)ortatlon nimiuniesa filr rowanl for capital and labor?
