The following extract from tbo National Granger is an excellent illustration of what tho giange Is and what It accompllshis: It Is n moral organization tho virtues of honesty, iuteRtity nnd frugality are taught and lsept cotiHtaiilly before the minds or the niombfts, and no ono Is entitled to member ship who is dhslioiest, imperative, vulgar or proline. It 1h n social orpnnlrntlon, for the reason that the brothers aud sistors tntet in happy unlsou, rfjoiciu; tOKotber In that fraternal fooling which has a tendency to improve society and make us willing to liston to the wants and relieve tbe dl-trtH of poor un fortunate brolhoiH andsUtcM. It is an intellectual organization, for in the grange brother atrikts hand whh btother, and .sis. er with M-ter, and tach one strives to olucid.ite, ml i veil and invigorate each other. It also helps trt oducito them In their hoiue, homo and Held duties, as we well know that a good housewife will, in the ex emplification of her duty, stimulate her sl9tors to go aud do llkowlse. Also, an at tractive, pleasant aud woll-ordeted borne cannot ltd! to iusulro au enthusiasm which must make an linpres&ion that cannot be easily erased. So aUo with tho farm: the brother who raises two husbels of corn or other crops, when tho other raises but one, and exemplifies it, tnustar.d will awaken a desire in others to obtain a similar result. Profit of Mutton Sheep. A correspondent of tho Piactical Farmer residing within twonty-flve miles cf Phllla dslpbla, states that ono of his certain and re liable sources of pro tit from year to year, is keeping sheep. When I began farming twenty years ago, he writes, I depended en tirely upou Southdowns. They have always proved with mo prolific; breeders, capital nurses, hardy and good feeders, and my Southdowu mutton ranks in the market with "gilt edged" butter. ,1 Inform my regular customers when I am going to bao a fine leg or loin of tare Southdown, aud they go off fast at throe to live cents above the mar ket prlco. Iu fact, Soutbdow u mutton is tho best mutton in tho world. If quantity of moat was tbe only desider atum, I would make no change; but as coarser wools, now brlug the highest price, and as perhaps I gain a liulo in tbo weight (of which I am not altogether certain, but at least do not lose any), I have made one cross on my flock of one hundred nwes, with the Cots wold. Tho bust results and the finest carcass have rosultud where tbe Southdown buck was usod on tho Cotswold owe. I do not want any liner bhoep than this makef, and I try to keep them for my purpose one h.ilf Southdown and one-half Cotswold. What lambs I lnvo to spnro are all sold in advance to the butchors, at about $3 00 per head. I raise root , which I consideraro in dlspenslblo in tbe sheep business, and with p,oud management I havo tho lambs iu tho nurkut iu Mrch nnd April, I consider the roots make a good substitute for grass, keep tbem in good heart, and with fine heart for early pasture. It promotes the How of milk, appetites. I bavo always followed tbe ad vice in your paper to keep all my animals healthy and thriving. If tbey once go down or become stunted, much of one's feed is thrown away. Two thirds of my ewes usually have twins. With lambs at eight to nine dollars each, and wool at fifty cents per pound, your readers can figure up my profits on one hundred Aheep. Jesuits in the United States. It .liny bo fiom a wcaiinetsof the strife between Church nud State iu the Old World that tome zealous Catholics begin to look wistfully toward America as the country which is supposed to accord tho most abso lute religious fieodom to all suets and Cliurchcs. M. de Molluarl can scarcely help wurming into onthusiasm as be tells us that "tho good fathers" (i. c, the Jesuits) have d! ided tbe United States into four provinces ol their order to wit, Missouri, New-Or leans, Baltimore, and Now York. In St. Louis, whole tbey have (heir head quarters, there are twenty. nlno Roman Cat hollo churches aud a collogo where tbe studies are superintended by tweuty Jesuit profes sors, French, lltlplan and American. The Silver Dollar. The truo Inwardness of the Iniquitous leg islature, which abolished the legal lender quality of the silver dollar, Is glvou by the Chicago JVitimc, from tho Congressional Globe, and debates iu Congress. It Is shown that the bill whs concocted by "au l'ngllsh gentleman," Mr Uoutwell, tbo comptroller of the currency, aud two or three other American oapitaUs's. The work of stealing it through Congress was Intrusted to Mr. Hooper, of Mafs.chupetts, in tho House, who is "a capitalist and money lender," the Tribune says, and to Senator John Shorman in the Senate, a wnll-kuown tool of tho same class. It was permit' od to le read in tbe House, and Mr. Hnopr deliberately lljd iu debate upon it In response to tho Inquiry of members regarding its leatums, aud Speaker lilsino by extraordinary ruling, helped to force It through tho House, only 123 uiembors being present. Mr. BUIuo un doubtedly was lu the tecret of tho whole scheme himself. Ills unheard ot ruling wnrruitsthts belief. The "English gentle man" refeired to, rs helping to Iramo au Amorlcau law, was Mr. Krnr.st Soyd, who was In the pay of ono of the heaviost bankers iu Europe. All these things appear, as the Chicago Tixbnnc says, iu the record and pro ceedings of C( ngress. The effect of this act was to lucrcavo tho value of American securities 18 per cent , that is, it compelled tho envernuieiit and all debtors tn pay that additional amount to their obligations, aud the capitalists, at borne and abroad, IS percent, ricuor than they were befdro. This was why they show ed such doop interest in the swindle. The "Eugllsh fenlleuiati," who was sent over to help tbo American Congress legislate, mudn millions of dollars for the Uuropein capital ists bo represented. Wo are glad to nolo that oven tho gold bullion press is beginning to get their nyes open In regard to tho dts bontst legislation, which Is briuim; ruin upon industry. The Chicago Tribune con cludes its editorial onthisiulamy as follows: "Agalust the iulqulty of that measuro theie should be a national prntost. Tho en lire people residing west of the Allechaules demand that so much of tht ac. of 1873, as abolishes the coinage of the old Amoriau dollar, aud deprived It of Its character, as a legal louder, snail bo rtprated The people of the west will fight to tbe last, aud uive to the last of their means to piy tho dobs of tuo union; nut tuey win ue not compelled by auy legislative skullduggery to submit to a change in the contract by which gold is In creased in valuo, and then pay niout requir ed exclusively iu gold." A New Iron Clad. Within the next few days tho Valorous, 0, paddle-wheel frigate, will convey from Pem broke to Portsmouth tho Dreadnought, 5, double screw tiou armour-plated turiet-sblp. With the exception of the Indexible, which is tar from comploto, the Dreadnought is tbe moat powerful ironclad In tbe world. She was first designed and oidcred to bo built at Pembroke in ISO!), ber name being originally tho Fury, which was aftorwards changod to tho present one she bears. Her actual dis placement when ready for tea is 10,8SO tons which, is 1,700 tons more than tho Thunder er. Messrs. Humphreys and Tennant, who constructed the engines of tho Thunderer, are also tbe makers of those on board the Dreadnought. They aro of great power, and work up to 8,000 horse power, tbo cost being upwards of 107,000. Hor armament will consist of lour 12M-inch 38-ton guns, to be mounted In two turrets, aud throwing 3, 200;ibs. weight of metal, antl, to add to hor offensive powtr, she is armed with a ram, Tbe platiug on her side varies tur 10 inches to 14 inches in thickuets, that on ber turret is 14 Inches and on ber decks 2 Inches to 3 Inches. The teak backing Is 18 inches thick, with au louor tkln of armour of M inch plates. The greater part of tho armour plate is placed about tho centre of tho ship, aud the water-lino is protected throughout the whole length, and for five to six feet below. She will exceed the Inflexible iu herdraught of water, as flic draws over 2i) feet forwaid aud 27 feet aft, Tho expenditure upon her hull Is 101,395, and she has to undergo sev eral trlaj trips at Portsmouth before sho Is ready for bka. Altogether this vessel will cost uearly three quarters of a million, London Timet, COINCIDENCES. Tbo Ilppubl!e.nu candidate for Pirsldent, (ion. Hayes, and the present President, (Jen.
