S LWl ."'. r? JKS S 8 WILLAMETTE FARMER. v Si i 4 I. ' 4 THE PELTON HOUSE- POWER. North Yamhill, Nov. 15, 1870. Ed. Farmku: Allow me, through your columns, to say a few words about what ap peare to mo to lio ono of the most Important cnterprisan yet started in our State; viz: the manufacture) of tho I'clton Six-Fold Horse Power and Separator, begun during tho past year, at Salem, by Monirs. I'elton, Savago &. Co. Though I may speak mostly of tho rel ative merit of the machines medo by tills company, I do not wish to bo underutood as attempting to advertise for them. Wo all understand something of the great ostent oi the importation of harvest machinery into ourS'aloat what is rnnpr.illy understood to bo very exorbitant price", tho machines thus obtained being without groat merit, either In point of duialillity or elllclency of uork. Tho damage is very groat to our Stato, con stituting ono among tho many very great drains through which tho monoy is constant ly pouring from our State to enrich tho cof fers of toiiio other more lortunato than our own. Tho burden of this great outlay comos, unfortunately, principally on the farmer. Out of his scanty but thard oaruod income the most of it lias to bo paid, and to this can be safely attributed much of tho Indebted ness and bankruptcy so often charged to tho Oregon fornieis as a class. Hut there seems, us jot, to have been no alternative but to submit to this undosirablo ordor of things, Nothing has over presented itself among us in tho shnpo of the kind of manulacture m point, tiiat has appeared to commend itself Htrongly for the support of tho Oregon agri culturist. In fact I am not aware tiiat ever an attompt has boon made in our State to inanul'acturotliroiliiiiK machinery; and now that thoso gentlemen have begun tho very Kind ol mauulacturo that It would t-eoiu wo as farmers mod as bad as almost any othor that could be, and that too under quite unfavorable chctinistauces, inasmuch us it is well known that thoro is ut present ory alight oncouragemont In tho direction of homo maniilitcturo of any kind, owing most ly to tho scarcity of capital for this kind ol investment, and to tho lack of more and hoapor mochanical labor, their enterprise would seem to demand our carofulattoution; and If It in found that their machinos h.ivo tho required morit to meet our demands, then they should havo tho unltod suppoit of all farmors. Thore aro many advantages to como from tho manufacturo of agricultural machinery at homo, among which tho keep ing of our monoyat home, might, perhaps, bo classed tho groatost; and in addition to this wo could at least havo machinery made ut homo that would bo Iar hotter adapted to tho uso required of them, it being a lact that iu different countries mid localities qulto dif ferent working ol machinery is required for good results, nvou in performing tho same klud of work; bunco It bocomes necessary to make changes in machinery Imported here, before lhiy will hnudlo our grain at all sat isfactorily. Messrs. I'elton and Savago have conlldoucu that in tholr machinos thoy havo all thoso special requirements, adapting them well to tho uso of this country, mid thoy pro pose to combine with theso tho greatest Btrongth and durability. I havo had some oxperlouco In tho way or (ostlng tho merit of their machines, which I will briefly rolato for tho information of thoso concornod; Last Mtinimor, boiiiR qulto Impressed with tho utility of their machines, ludglng irom tholr advorthomout In tho I'ahmuu, In com pany with my brother, O. Stewart, wo pro cured tho uso of ono of their Six-Fold Horso Powors, with tho privilege of returning It ut closo of threshing or keeping It If wo cho3o, us wo had a good power of tho ordinary kind which wo did not wish to lay nsldo and pur chasoanowono, unless wo could know wo woro getting something of superior merit. Our harvest bolngqitito oirly wo were obliged to tako an old power that had boon run three yoars, according to Mr. l"n. statement, In California. Mr. l'oltoti camo oyer from S. lorn In poitou, and took tho powar apart, cleaned tho gearing oil", and I confess Hint so llttlo did It hao tho vppeaiancoof U6o that I, with othorn, expressed some doubts as to wliothor Mr. V. was not iiiUtakeu as totho amount of uso tho power had been put to; but slnco running the s.uiio pow er about forty days with from eight to twelve liorsos driving uforty iuoh separator, wo llnd that tho ad ditional wear is so very elijjht htat wo aro fully prepared to retract all our misgivings and not doubt In tho least tho entire possibil ity that It had beon put to all the. use claimed for it by Its Inventor ami maker. In short, wo are fully satlsllod that tho I'elton Six-Fold Horse Power Is all thatlsulnimrd for It either iu point of strength, durability, or easy draft. Mr. 1'. also suggested and assisted to make ouio oliaujies lu our separator, It being a large-sized swoepstako pattern. Jn every particular the Improvements made proved to be or groat talue, resulting in much raster aud bottor separation, and almost perfect cleaning or the grain, enabling us to dispose of the worst blue pod ami green fern, right from the header with the greatest case. With tbeao facts and ottiors to austaiu me, I am well eatUtled that this inauufketurlug firm ttuderauuuUthe manufacture aud uso of bar Test machinery, aud If sustained by the pa- irouago of the farmers of tlnuNu'.6, the com jnuiy with which he Is astooiatod will, with the assistance of his aujmior mechanical ability, build up In duo time an enterprise that will be or luiuieuee value to our State m well as to the whole Pad tlo Coast. We bave decided to purchase a power and keep the oue we have been pjltig rather than to be to the trouble and expenao ot returning It to Balem aud getting a new one in its stead. 1 would advise all farmers who contemplate purchaaiog horse powers to acquaint them selves witu thn merits of tumo before pur chasing auy other. 1). U. Stjjwaut. Vegetables and Fruit. Mr. S. W. Carter, of Salem, who has been traveling for somo woeks past in Yamhill and Polk county, fnrnishen us with tho fol lowing items: Visiting tho farm of Mr. John Sanders, ono mile west of Amity, ho found a quarter of an aero of potatoes of tho Irish Cup variety, that promled to yield at the rato of four hundred bushola per acre and observed ouo tuber that moasurcd six teen inches round, nine Inches iu length, smooth and solid; tcvru of these weighed twouty-ono pounds, aternglng throe pounds each. Mr. Carter nioasuied a squash giowu by Mr. Sanders that showed a girth of five foot; an egg of tho Cochin China fowls, measured six and j. quarter inches around, threo and a halt long; a Winoap apf.lo was oloven inches round, other fruit in proportion. Mr , Thomas Ilender'on, who lives half a mile west of Amity, showed Mr. Carter a blood beet, that measured at tho surfacoof tho ground exactly two feet In circumfer ence. Mr. T.L. Mr. Georgo Tatom, ot Dixie, showed n long scarlet radish the ho said measured 12 Indies long, weighed S!4 pounds, diameter 10K inches. Mr. Carter is traveling as agent for tho "Always Uandy" stovo sIioIvoh, th.it hnvo been ndveitised In the Farmer for two months past, aud which his customers find "always handy" suio enough. There is no change in tho homo market, Portland quotatiou remain at $1 501 03 for 8a"'ed wheat; Salem buyers ero still pay ing 75 conts per bushel, aud those prtcs aro nulntaiuod in tho faco of a heaviness r.nd slight decline in foreign markets. Wo can not think that foreign markets will remain stagnant and sustain tho decline, and our readers must recollect that ships aro loaded hero with u view to what tho European nuir kots will probably bo in Juno and July, nt which tiruo tho cargoes to bo shipped for tho next two months will probably bo placed on tho Liverpool market. This makes us, In a moisuro, independent or present foreign quotations. Tho prospect of war in Europo is diminish ed at tho present time, but may bo increased in tho Spring. Tho demand in Europe is bated on tho actual demand for consumption and not on speculation. It is apparent that, howevor abundant the present supply may bo, theie will bo a scarcity ol tho supply next Summer, and tho world will carry small stocks over to another harvest yoar. At present buyers claim that they aro giving tho highest tho market can afford, and evou above that, which is perhaps a correct statement, and tho condition of tho market is pronounced " weak," which may ho also conoct, but wo may hope to seo ! weaher. The excellent quality of our biead- sialli will insure a prefereuuo for them always, at a bettor thau average piled. Too rate oi freights has much to do with wheat quotations, lloro at Salom whx-rit would be worth Oeeuts per bushel inoro it competition cuuld reduco liuiyht to a fair wto.eayJJ per ton, at which rato a steam boat could oarn about 1,500 u week, gl,00Q of which would ho clear profit. When a steamboat that costs less thau Sfi'OOO can pay lor hers elt more than twico in a year's tlmo, somebody iu being robbed, and we think it must bo the producer. Tho people at Corvallls must sutler a loss ot'atloaslS centispsr bushel at tho present prico of freights. When they talk about tho wheat market iu comparison with lormor years, they must bo suro to take this Irbight ques tion into consideration, and chargo tho loss uu river monopoly us iar as 10 ueces.'ary. Ocean freights at San Frauciico romnin merely nominal. Tonnage is so abundant that vessels are loaving that port to seek cargooj olsewheio. The CoicrciaJ Ha uUl assorts that iivights aro merely nominai; that ves-sola that llnd charters tako freight to Liverpool for 1 10s per ton, which is DO shillings, or 27 cents per bushol. Portland rates aro a pound higher, at least, but that is adiseriminmion that is eminently unfair, and should not continue. It sccmoprobablo.thon, that ocean freights will remain at a lair rate during tha winter, and if vessels running to San Francisco, in the eosst trade, carry freight still lor J3 per ton, tho cheapest way to ship to Liverpool will hi to tiaushlp at San Francisco. European Grain Market. London, Nov. 13. Tho Jfaj Lane 11c jdimwivs: Clear diy days uud absence of moisture during tho past week lias been of great service, enabling farmors to cousign wheat to tho ground under favorablo cir cumstances and larger breadth than has been sow n laatycar.
