WILLAMETTE FARMER.
From Coos Connty.
Noiiway, Coos Co., Sept. !, 1.S70.
Ki. Faiuikk: ThlnklnR perhaps Jew
items Irom Coon county would boacceptablo
to your moat valuable paper, I Herewith
niftko a venture to wrlto you some of the
' moNt Important.
First, as to wheat crops. The wheat crop
or Coos county, bo lar as we have yet been
able to learn, will not, we think, averagu
half a crop; ami In aomo Instance", late
flown wheat is not worth harvesting. Rust
striking iho whoat In the latter part of June,
1h, beyond a doubt, the cmiso of the almost
entire failure of Into sown wheat. On the
Ooquillo all whoat Wis but little short of
n average crop. Hut, owlnc to the small
amount ot fall wheat sown, Coos county, wo
think, vv in not produce enough wheat to sup
ply one-fourth its present population. The
yield of oats is comparatively good, while
hay is above an average yield. Potatoes aro
in some localities very poor.
Tne upper Ccj tillle is supplied with tner
chandisri by tlireu well-lllled stores, the
most uxteDslvo one boiug situated nine miles
above Coiiulllocity, at a point newly and ap-
iiropriatoly named Norway, Here Messrs.
teed it Nelson have erected a commodious
atore Into whlch;they have Just moved their
JarKe stock of inerchandlso. Much credit Is
due these gentlemen for their enterprise In
the way of aubstantial Improvement. The
Orange meetsjln n spacious and well arrang
ed hall over the store. A post office has also
been established here, which Is a great con
venience to the settlers. A. steam saw mill
wrs built at this place last fall, bv two gen
tlemen from Minnesota, which, wa are worry
to say, has not proved, as yot, a very suc
cessful enterprise, owing, wo presume, to the
nun ability of its owners to run it.
The time of year has come when our eyes
cannot go amiss fur seeing vast columns of
sinoke Issuing in overy diroctlon from the
dense forests of the Coquille bottoms, Indi
cative of the great amount of timber that has
been fallon or slashed, as wo term It, during
the summer, and now being burned. Our
Bottlers aro men of nerve and determination,
which we cannot fall to see by the energy
the' display In hewing neat farms and
pleasant homes out of this seemingly Im
penetrable forest.
In addition to tho tug Katlo Cook, whicli ia
now carrying freight and passengers botween
this point and tho mouth of the river, a
stoamboat will soon bu built capablo ot run
ning tho river at all times of the yoar as far
tip as tho Junction of tho north and south
forks, wliion will greatly promote the advan
tages 01 mo larmers ot mo upper Coquille.
