"Heautiful! beautiful!" exclaimed President Washington, in 17M), as rid ing into the town of Haverhill, his eyes canght an extended view of the Mer rimack. It was autumn. The trees deemed jewelled with rubies and gold, and the stream went winding away, like a ribbon, amid the unnumbered gems. 'Haverhill," said Washington, 'la the iileasantest villago I everjiabsed through,' His eye was feasted with a continu ous nicture of forest-crowned hills dreamy valleys, shadowy woods and .sparkling waters It was in Haverhill that Wasoington made himself so delightfully loving and familiar with the children. It is a prot- tv sfnrv tn full it i tlmu. f'nfiffititifnl times. All was excitement in this old Revo lutionary town. Down the hill had galloped a honcman, bareheaded, and at full "peed, sounding a trumpet, and calling, " Washington is coming ! Washington is coming." The tones of the village bell continued the great now. School was dismissed; the peo ple filled the street with hearts heating for joy. The children, especially, hailed the '(treat Washington' with delight, and gaed upon him with awe as lie passed. Among the children who called upon the President were two little misses. about eight years of age, named Mary White and Uetsey Shaw. 'And how do the little misses' do'." said the President, pleasantly, taking one mi each knee; 'which of you will mend a glove for mo'." Kach was eager for the honor, and the glove was soon neatly repaired. In payment for this service, Washington gae each a kiss. The delighted chil dren told their companions, who were immediately inspired to seek .similar favors.. So two more came to Wash ington'ft door' and knocked timidly. 'Will you let us kiss your hand'." if-k-ed they. 'I will exchange kisses with you,' said the smiling Prefident to the joy ful little beggars. After Washington retired lie hoard the loud cries of ahoy below. He in quired what the hoy wanted, and was informed that he wanted toseo General Washington. 'Hriug him up to the room,' said the ueuorji. The hoy w.is brought, hut seemed fiiitu disappointed at the sight of the President, whom lie had regarded sis a sort of a lleruule-.
