I'll h a Si J? i v i v" rT WILLAMETTE! FARMER. "- More about Hoga. Ed. Faiimkr; I am pleased to hear from my olI friend K. C. Geer upon the merits of blooded stock, for I am satisfied tbero is not a man in Orcpon Ibat ha taken more Inter est and pride in the businees and there are few as tcood judges, but groat men will difler. Now, a to stultifying mysolf: Mr. Oeor does not understand mo or wishes a little controversy, for we do not differ an iota aw to fiiltb in blood, though wo Beem to about fredii'g and care. I lake the posliion that ff pel and caro makes the improvement in lilt-ml, mid the best blood of to-day Is capaWxof lmproement and ought to bo Im proenl, which must be dono by feed and pood iiiauaRcmtut. Tl.u best breeds or hops will in two or threo years, under some men1 care. mj deteriorate, that they are the stock described by Kalpb Geer. Ho asks why 1 paid Mich priro for Bcrkshires. I know tho value of the stock, and bought them for my own ue, not thinking of maklnjr money by breeding thenl for sale. He and I proved by experiment that there was more money io1ieloi-t than made breeding fine stock for sale. I fay to all, do not start with improv ed breeds unless you intend using good care and feeding well. Twenty years ago I sold to a farmer some oftny boRt sows, and about three years afterwards, ho not being at home, I looked around his place and found plenty of bogs, but not any that looked like the Cross hog. When ho afterwards wished to make another purchat o of mo I declined to sell and plaluly told him that any scrubby hog was good enough for tho care he gave, and to-day, or any time, any ono who will rail at my farm near town will bo convinced by seeing some of my best imported blood that have been let out for two years and lately returned. They havo tho color of Berkshires but that is all. Ono sow having 8 pigs I got when the pigs were ono week old. Those of my own raising are eating with them out of the tame trough and the difference is too per ceptible for any ouo to be mistaken. They are bftdly degenerated. To improve and breed properly, your male and female must have particular attention and be in proper condition. To be fully un derstood by all, I will digress a little, and call tho attention of your readers to the horse, as tbe beet way to explain my views. I ask tbe question, can Oregon be beat in improving horses? I think our farmers csn not be excelled in this branch, aud you all know how it is done. See a boy leading a ticking colt at tho lair; ask the boy how ho got so big and fat, aud he will tell you how kls father put tho mare on n piece of Jun wheat nnd fed plenty of onto. You all tin- dersUmt how to Improve horses, and the hogs must be improved in same way. I am not writing these articles from a seltlsh motive, to sell tine pigs; I have given more pigs away than 1 ever sold. I havo bad at ono time two thousand fat hogs In ray pens, and the tamo year I made into bacon live to sht'thousaud hogs, besides packing a great many cattle, aud my brand of cured meats needs no commrnt from me. As my own hogs attained double the weight of those J purchased I claimod one hundred per cent, for blood and I claim fully that much now friend KnAph.,- We do not differ, so wo shake bands aud ko ahead as usual. But tho question is, Will it pay? Now this Is a question every ouo must decide for him self. Hon. -J. W. Ncsmtth tells me that fat tening hogn pay! him better than to sell his grain, he fattens Ironi 100 to 150 each year and when visiting bis farm I found that he was attmidlng to them systematically, mak ing a bUNim of Its his spring nigs are in weigh -00 lbs. nod he says bo is going to in crease to LW jilscs to be fatteneel annually. I wish there wore a lew more like him. Mr. Benjamin Holt, of ilarrlsburg, told me he bad mailii no money from bis farm since lie quit the ling business, mid he usually lets me have 100 ruud at a time, and ho says he now lutmuls raUing and fattening 200 pigs. 'These are men of experience. I now copy nn experiment made by II. Jlorrell, Ilarrlsburg, 111., who says: "On tho seicond day of last December 1 weighed 20 hegs, tho aggregato weight being -4,000 lbs., or uu avurvgu of Iicyf lbs. per bead, they were then ted six weeks on corn meal, tho 11 1 st week they consumed ttiJ4 bush.and vntned 4?J lbs ; nooonil week itliny were led lid,1 bush, and srxlnml a?"
