: WILLAMETTE FARMER. 5 Destitution of Salsm Woolen Mills. Soou nlAer uiMntgLt, WoJneMiluy uiorn itijr, I lie tiro aUrin aroused our citizens aud a brili.iUutcoutltiuing lu the north showed tho destruction of somo largo building, and proved to lie the Woolen Mills. Thin large liotory w&s burDod to , the ground, leaving not a fragnibnt, nave charred oiutiors, to tell where lor twenty j-nars had stood one of the tnost Important establishments on the Pacilio coast, which aNoHtood as the pioneer, having been built In 1SD5, before any other woolen inauulactory was oven contemplated, either in tlili State or California. The fire 01 initiated in the attic, probably among the refuse woole, no doubllrnm &on taDeouscotubutilion, and so was nut Imme diately perceived by the watchman, who, when attracted by tho unusual light, under took to give the alarm by tinging the bell, but failed, because tho bell rope was burned olF above. Ihls caused detention ioppiead ing the alarm, tho lire bell mid euglneH being threo quarters of a tullo distant, uptown. When tho alarm at l6gth became general, Mid engines reached tho spot, the tiro had gained ttrrlfio headway. The vast structure, built of combustible wood and dry as kiu dling, the floors saturated with oil, nil the contents highly lull utimublo, soon became a roaring, crackling mass oi llamp, presenting a sight of most deplorable grandeur, such as the beholder can never forget. Some of too manufactured goods were saved Iroiu the basement, and the books and papers were rescued Irom the business olHca, soparate from the factory, at the street gate, which, howover, it was impossible to save. All the engines in Ongon could not have made an impression ou thut diead conflagration when U was once under headway. After saving what could be reached all tho bystanders could do was to look Idly on while the Jlatnes reached down from above and seized upon tho lower parts of the structure with irresistible power aud itiry. The building and machinery could not be replaced ior less than oue hundred thousand dollars, and bore insurance for about half that amount, very nearly enouch to cover tho indebtedness of tho company. The loss is distributed among a great many compa nies and will bear heavily upon none. Mr. Uristvold, (lessee) had an insurance of $7,500 ou the stock and manufactured goods but will hardly escape without some loss. He was conducting the business with energy, and no doubt with success, much to the ad vantage of tho towu and its business, and also furnishing support to nearly oue hun dred operatives who constituted the working force, aud who must feel tho loss of this means of support. Mr. Griswold Is now in San Francisco, purchasing wool and attending to business matters. This unfortunate conlltgration is much to bo deplored and Salem will greatly t'cttl its eft'octs, if no steps are taken to rebuild the factory, Mr. Griswold is owner of the -eiclenslva brick baildiii, only ptrtly occu pied, known as the Agricultural Works, and as that excellent property Is not productive aud is admirably calculated for the purpose, we may hope that be will place new and im proved machinery therein uud do business again under much better auspices than in tho old Woolen Mill with old machinery. About the Dollar Mark. Kd Farurr: Will you pleao inform us in .v our next why the character to represent dollars (?) is placed before an amount, when written, instead of after, and also, if It is right to use it in tho latter. A ltKAinn. ANswnu. The Kngli9h count money as pounds, shillings, and pence, and use the mark preceding the pounds, and the letters h. aud d. after the shillings and ponce; that U immemorial custom, wo prosume, aud as tho United Stales money is ou the decimal system, it is both convenient and proper fo write the dollars, aud precede them with the dollar mark, while the ceubs, which are cut ott by a period, stand as only hundred parts ot the dollar, which they are. You could not conveniently write the dollar mark alter the dollars, if there were cents to be added, aud it is not proper. LirrEr.L's. Lutell a Gaj , liun.ou, are I the publishers. Accidental Poibonino. On last bundav, l a seven mouihs old cuild of Hon A. N. Gilbert, while Hitting on the floor got hold of a green coloted pajmr collar box aud applied its mouth to the same and soou succeeded in swallowing a sulllcient quantity of the groen coloring matter, which undoubtedly con tained arsenic, and in a few minutes grew deathly sick and commenced vomiting violently. For a while the alarmed parents d Wpalred of saviug the little sufferer's Hie, but yesterday It was quite well, although a severe warning to parents to place articles out of reach of little ones, as arsenic is one of the pigments that compose green in all arti cles of that color. Statesman. How to Kill Squirrels. Mr. G. XV. Gibson wrltos In answer to the iuquiry made, How can (qulrrols be best ex terminated? tlmt helms lived among these pests for 25 year, as he moved to Oregon in 1830, moved ou Long Tom in 1S31, aud has lived where fiiulrrols were -very plenty, so that by harvest they would cut a field of wheat for one hundred yards towards the a tutor. He poismnd sometimes with polson e I baron, sometimes poisoned wheat, has tried all potions and finds the prepared pois on put up by WakcUe of Sun Francisco the best exterminator he has used. In this eonntc'.ioti we would call attention to the preparation made by Uudge, Calel it Co., ot Portland, advertised in our columns, which that firm put up at great expense, both for maleilil aud machinery used in Its preparation. We can gpak with almost ceilalnty of the good tflectof Hodge's squir rel polsou, because wo have tried it oui selves in the hills close to Salem, where we hao lately made improvements and, sowed grain. Tne hillsides fairly swarmed with squirrels, and after one thorough dosing the men at work tliero inform us thore 's scarce ly one to be seen. Owing to the protracted rains we havo not repented the closi, as the poison Is not prepared to hold its efilcacy in wet weather, but we feel confident it is going to woik to perfection, aud shall make a thor ough use of it as soon ns the weather will .pwiiult. It is put up similar to the California preparation, lu tin cans, and consists of wheat which has been chemically infused with the poison. It has tho groat advantage of being a homo production, and therefore deserves tho preference if it possesses equal value. How to Dress Mutton. Ed. Fahmeu: As several of your corre spondents have given you their way of dressing mutton, I will glvoyoumy plan, which Is: first, get a bucket of clean cold water, thou hang your sheep up by the heels, cut its throat, and as soon as It quits strug gling cut a hole In the upper part of tho ab- dotneu aud pour In the bucket of water, or as much of It as you can get in; then pro reed to dress as quickly as possible. The cold water hardens the tallow on tho inside, and theroby prevents the gases from the stomach escaping and injuring the meat. c. J. Junction, Lane Co.
