MBhJI WILLAMETTE FARMER. II Marchante and Grangers. SntiNannLD, Lane Co., ) March 31, 1870. J Knifm Willamette Farmer: I enclose to you a letter taken fro.n the San Francisco - Grocer, written by a merchant of Eugene City, In which he makes some charges against the farmers of this neighborhood. - Hy chance I t?ot a copy ol this piper, and, thinking that the letter would be of interest to the farmers of this country, I look it to the Eugene Guard, The editor told tne he would publish it that week, but it failed to make its appearance. Now I Rend you the came letter. Judging from an article I saw in the Farmer, you are ready aud wllliui; to do anything that would b of interest to the farmers ana grangers. The formers nre all well pleased with the Willamette Far mer, anil think it is just the paper for them. A. D. Burton. Kuoene TiTY.Feb. 11, 1876. Editor Pacu-io Grocer Dear Sir; In closed you will flnd a draft on M. Ehrmann fc Co., 217 Front Street, for $2 50, to renew my subscription to the Grocer for another year. Please scud me one copy of the Gran j;er Exposition. I thiuk you are on the right track, and I hope you will b sustained in in your opposition to Qrangorism aud other evils. The Grangers, to a large extent, are re&Domihle for the many short-weight and adulteration swindles now so common, for they are never willing to pay a fair price for anvthingthar buy; and to secure double value for what they sell, they do not hesitate to put up shorts themselves. I have been retailing goods for twenty-one years, and 1 find it difficult to make my customers believe that my goods are the cheapest, iu conse quence of purilv and full weight. When tueycau be prevailed upon to pay a good price for a good article they are generallv attsfied afterward to listen to reason. But I keep both kinds, and can always give the customer his choice. There aro man7 of your articles that I would like to see publish ed in other papers, so that the Grangers could read them, but the country newspa pers are afraid to say anythlug against the Grangers and their liigh monopoly, as by so tolng they might lose a few subscribers. The Grangers here have just organized, or rather Incorporated, a joint stock compuny for the purpose of entering largely into the merchandise business, and I suppose we will have to "shut tip," They say they will uot patronize us any loneer. But the funny part of the matter "is. that those most aotive in this new undertaking are such as are still in debt to the merchants here for their last year's supplies. Yours truly, F. B Duns. WHAT THE "FARMER" SAYS. We have no personal accquainlance with Mr. Dunn, and are under some obligation to blm for kindly acting as agent for the Farmer at Eugene durinc the year past. Helnfcnns us that this was a private and unguarded correspondence, not the least in tended for publication, which is only reason able to believe, and every man must recog nize how common it is for m all to express ourselves, under such circumstances, in a manner that would be inflamatory if done with deliberate purpose. Mr. Dunn evidently fails to do justice to .the object of the Patrons' organization, which is as much for self-improvement as for self-interest; not understanding their principles, he may easily misunderstand them, and every reasonable member of the grange should see how naturally the prin ciple of self-preserAation comes in to create prejudice agtinst what seems to threaten personal Interest. Now, as to Mr. Dunn's letter, let us ask if there is truth in his positions. If any farmer puts up short weight be certaiuly is not a geod Patrou. He is certainly corroct in asserting that goods or fair quality are the cheapest in the end, and be has some right to complain if men who have not paid for laRt .year's supplies, bought of him, are using their money to create competition. As to co-operation, we glvo the dift'arent views that aie current on this subjoct, and publish what our iriands have to say, with out yet possessing positive opinions. Where the right man controls business, and mana ges it with ability, it can succed, aud where poorly managed it cannot succeed. Mer chants who have a life training to businass and have full experience as to the values and quality of merchandise, possess a great ad vantage that co-operation cannot easily equal, lit least at the outset. This problem must be worked out by time and experience, aud we feel no hesitation in believing that it will witness instances of failure as well as success, but farmers never will know what they can do until they try, and wooflor thtm words of caution, not of discouragemcut. We publish an interesting letter from Lane county on this matter of co-operation, aud iu thli connection would say that whew tho experiment has been tried among us, as for instance at Ualsey, it strikes us the ex perience gained could be given to the pub. llo with advantage. x Everyone should be careful to give prompt utteutiou and rational treatment to a severe cold or a racking Cough as these are com monly the ehlet primary symptoms or a dis ordered state of the Lungs, involving a ten dency l de elope into a settled Couuuip tion. This bis Jory begins In 1S92 aud comes up to lil'J. Desultory Talk. Ed. Willamette Farmer: Spring is here beautiful, glorious, bright-eyed spring. The apple trees putting forth their g'oen leaves, the sweet caroling of the little birds, the loud cackling of the hen, aud eou the chirrup of the little chicks, all go to prove that spring is horn. Now and theu we tee a butter cup, drowsily opening Its eyes alter its long wiuter's nap. But, my readers, why detain you longer on this 6uljct? Have you uot all wituessod the beauties ot spring? Aud is not this Spring as bright and beauti ful as those that have passed and gone? For mers are very busy in this seoMon, pushing to get their crops in; so busy in fact, they scarcely take time to make garden; but as a general thing it has bten two wet to make garden except on dry uplaud. Some lew farmers iu this vicinity are gbttlug excited about the plum and prune busiuess, while others are trjing to become millionaires raising blackberries. We liko to see differ ent branches of agriculture aud horticulture. The Farmer of March 24th, Is bsforo me. The correspondence gets "he'.ter'u more of It." Wo like the grit as well as the senti ments oi botn Mr. Wayside and Mr. Way -out-to-one-aliie. If they should both come to the ceuter,.vve fear there would be a collis ion. Now, Mr. Editor, I want to ask a few ques tions through the columns of the Farmer, which I hope some of your kind readers will answer; 1st, tha best cure for poisiou oik or ivy; "id, tfco cause of young chickens pecking each other's eyes; and last, but uot least; what will keep the girls at home till after leap year? My first attempt. x. Sringfield, Lane county. About Ground Squirrels. The lime of the year has arrived wheif lie inevitable ground squirrel gives up bis winter bousukeoplng and comes forth to make the bust living he can oil the spring time, At the present time he is piobably cs hungry as ho ever gets to be under ordlnaiy circumstances, and it is, no doubt, the proptr time for those who fear his harvesting pur forruances to be taking active steps to get rid of the pestilent little animal. Therefore we Inquire: who knows shout the littlo fellow's habits and reoullaritiss, and is willing to give the rest of the world tho benefit or bis knowledge? Aud who can tell us the speedi est, most effrtctlve, and thorough way of kill Ing them? This is a matter which concerns thousands of our people at the present time. Plows for Walla Walla. The enterprising firm of T. Cunningham t Co., of this city, made a shipment of plows and eeed-sowers for Walla Walla, on a late down trip of the steamer City of Salem. The Garden City plows, old by this house, have made a reputation that has secured a trade from far and near. In all depart meets of the agricultural implement trade Cunning ham supplies bis customers with tho vory latent and moat Improved machinery, and best articles to be procured. His large trade has been built up by this means. Ed. Farmer: I noticed in your paper of March 17ih a tobacco account of a geutlf -man who has spent $12 a year for forty years. If be hod saved his money and loaned It out t 12 percent, for fortv years, he would Inve tho sum of 83,220 51. And tor sixtv years he would have one hand full, or $80 SOS SS. Johih H. Mii.i.mi. The Walla Walla Spirit ny: Mrs. S. C. Jones, u farmers wife not often met with, hauled this spring ten thous and fence mils from the mountain-! all alone, put seventy-five acres in wheat, with a gang plow, prepared a flue gar den, milks regularly eighteen cows twice a day, makes Imtter onco a week, keeps four hundred and twenty laving hens and disposes of their produce, which supplies the family with all their groceries, attends to her house hold like a qiiitful wife and takes care of four interesting young children. The "Major" Reeves who is reported to.have been robbed of Hourly a thous and dollars recently, in Pierce county, acted very queerly. llefore his rojxirt ed loss he is said to have vlnited tho reservation and told the Indians that he was "a brother of George Washing ton," and that lie had been .sent to order the Indians to leave the reserva tion. The Olympia Jicio say-: Reports continue to come In, of rotting potato es. Secure your seed as soon as you can. It will bo diitictilt if not impossi ble to procure any a few weeks hence. Early Rose potatoes aro now held at two dollars a bushel and are none too plenty at that price. It is feared by some'that wo must abandon the pututo as a field ciop.
