KniTtm Farmkii: As we bavo lon a read er oi tour valuable paper Tor some time, and as .u liavo not chanced to too anything In your columns from this section of the coun. try, we will try mid write somethliiir, hoping 4hat it may be beneficial to some person, if no other than ourselves. We lose more by nog- leetlng our limitless at the present than we nan make in many years of toil in the future; tor by neglect and bad management the farm is mortgaged, and in a short time it has to be sold to satisty the liability never mortgage your place. Mr. Kdltor, on commencing this It was our Intention to have said something regard ing our section of the country, but as we wpent the time and occupied the space writ ing about something else, we will have to defer that until some future time, when we lll gie a limited description of a vast area of country lying lu this county (Clackamas) and which is of en lor settlement. Kditou Fak.mkr: Perhaps an occasional correspondence from this section will Interest many ot your readers. As our climate Cast of the Cascades is so diversitied, I will first -sp-ak of the past winter. We had an tin isual amount of rain in the fall which started the grass early, thereby leaving stock in much better condition than they had lieeu lor several pieceding winters. Wo bad three snow storms of about two weeks' duration each. Stock remaining on the range did well, requiring no feed whatever. A large amount ot bay remains on hand for tiiixt winter. Sheep hae done well this winter, the baud nearest here belouging to Walker and Churchman requiring only one week's feeds and are now in good condition. We have had flue weather during the entire mouth of February, which continues at the present writing. An unusual amount of grain is being sown In the vicinity of Weston this season. In this neighborhood (six miles west of Weston) the farmers are sowing tlax principally. Ttils is as good lor wheat as the lands uerer Veston, but the devastations iv the squirrels for two successive years tiavd Induced the farmers, In the outskirts of ,0 1 the settlements to resort to a crop that the soulrrtH will not molest. Klax has not been cultivated very exten sively heretofore In thU section, but enough I was sowu last season to demonstrate its en-1 tire success. Your correspondent resides in I v hat is known here as the squirrel district, , and to show you the extent of devastation ctused by this pest I will refer to a single, .case. Mr. K. Al. Mansfield, residing live miles west of Weston, sowed fifty-two acres of wheat from which be harvested one ton , of hay. Many of our farmers have sold out 1 and left with no motive whatever save to get 1 rid of the squirrels. Kor some time our fu ture has bet n gloomy Indeed; hut a brighter rt Is now dawning. A machine has been invented with which wa can exterminate Chepwt. We have organized a club In order to secure sytinatlo action. The result ec in to have infused ne v life luto our clti y.snu. In whatever direction we may gaze, ore) see the plowshare baring to the suu the virgin soil. Tnousauds of iturea will be sown In wheat this fall where no grain was ever before planted. May of Oregon City, was made for the bouellt of all concern ed, and especially for W. H.T.of Aumsvllle, Oregon. The beginning point, which Mr. May did not furnish, was Jan. Is', 1841). Let me furnish another practical example. J. M. B. who lives not far from Silvertou, Marion Co. Oregon, is 70 years old. He ad mits that he has spent at least twelve dollars a vear, for the last GO years, for tobacco. Suppose, Instead of spending his money for tobacco, he had, each year, loaned the money at twelve per cent, per annum, compound interest, what would be the amount? I hope the farmer's boy, H. A. Cornell, of Portland, who divided the stick of timber so nicely, does not chew or smoke tobacco, and that he will give us a solution of this ques tion. Or, suppose a man begins at 20 and continues its use till tie is CO, as above; what would be the amouut7 W. Porte i . Aumsvllle, March 0. 1870. Ko. Farmer: In looking over the last number of your paper I saw an article which stated a tobacco consumer spent money enough each year to buy a cow. Now, sup posing that he bought a cow on the first of January I860, aud one each succeeding year until the nrst of January 1873, he would bavc 15 cows, and a rough estimate shows that the profits derived from the sale of the steer calves and the money placed on inter est uutll the first of January, 1870, with the mouey derived from the sale of all the cons and calves, he would have the snug little sum of 20,010, which would make many a poor uibteco user comparatively rich.
