,(,(iJia tfgEH' WU1LAMETTE FARMER. Overstate the Tacts." Fortlanp, Feb. 28, 1870. r Willamette Faiuikh: In tlie lest nil . rof your iper is an nrtlclo lrotu W. Porter, toy old friend and follow-traveler across tlm Plain, headed "Djn't Ovorrtnte the Facia." In his article, ho toys: " Uufor . tuuately for Oregon, exaggerated accounts of it have gone abroad, axd credulous people havo come with unreasonable expectations, and consequently are disappointed." Ho say 8: " A few days ap;r a mm came to rov hou'e who had left Iowa on the 8 h day of January last for the purpoR of seeing OiCKOii. Ho cxppcts to (spend a year In look I a j over Or egon. He neeins null pleased with what lie has seen. Like the Queen of Shelu, ho stjs the half had not beou told." Kow, what I wunt to know is, in whal hadn't "the half been told"? lutlie " ex aggerated accounts " of the country? No: that couldn't ho, of course. In the ti utbful accounts of the country ? Of course not, for uo account that didn't "bnlf" describe a country could be truthful. It would be just as objectionable to mo as an "exaggerated" account, and overy Intelligent Oregonlun would say, as soon ns ho read it, that It was written by some thick-skulled fellow that couldn't appreciate the country. Then this guest of Mr. Porter's must havo been load ing accounts of Oregon that had underrated its advantage;. It must havo beau so, or l.o . couldn't truthfully say "tho halt hadn't been told." Shouldn't the authors of the-e aniclos have told at lc.ifet tho "hat," so as to give our Iowa oeokers after Intonmitloti a more correct account of Oregon ? and, while they were about if, wouldn't it havo been about .is well to tell the whola truth, shamo the devil, and disgust the ioug-halied Pikes, who genei ally swoar, as soon as they poke their heads above the hatchway of the steer ago, in Portland,;;tuat "Oregon has beou most gol-derucdly zadgerratod "even if a lew of them did go back on tho next steamer, carrying their butternuts and rjrej lucks b&okuith them? But frieud Porter siys "I told him that durlnp my twenty-seven years' residence in tho Willamette valley no winter lind been cold onouuh to freez-j uudug potatoes." Now, that is all very tute, although, duiing that time I have seen the thermometer go six degrees below- zero three or four limes ouco in 1818, ouca In 1601, and ones in 1867 C3r;a!n. "What !'' frays some man, "six de crees below zero, and potatoes not frecz".? Ye3, but then tbey would havo frozen If the ground hadn't been covered with snow. This fact wasn't s'-atcd by Mr. Porter, neither was tho other fact at to the very cold weathor. He told ilio- Irt'tli, but ho didn't tall it all and In telling went ho did, hasn't he laid himself liablo in tho future to be charged with having "exaggerated" by p.onio Misaourlm, who 's induced to coma to Or egon from having read in tho Wiixaiilute Fakueu that "during twenty seven years uudug potatoes hadn't liozon," naturally inferring Irom this that our winters aie warm? Won't ho bo npt to scold a little about (ho "axiggeralion".whon, duiin(;soino winter In the fu'uie, he happens to toe the potatoes fro son &olid, whon tho thermometor goto ovou four or five degrees below zero. when tho ground isn't covered with snow? Kow, I have read a great deal about ptO' jilo having been disappointed in coming to Oregon from reading "exaggerated" account of the country. Evory body 's writing and shouting "Don't exaggerate! don't exag gerate!! for heaven's sake, don't exag gerae!!! or imu'srant3 will Lo disappoint ed!" Now, Mr. Kdlor, tho nuked feet Is just hbre, unil I mil going to let the cat right out nttlm bag. Every man of Reuse (and mat's the kind wo want here) will like Or egon, v hen he go's here, nndevey c'upid, worthless follow will bo disyuaved, and want to go back to Pike, whether he was induced o come here from havint: read something which was writt'xi by Hu'-uey Small, Mis. au telle, David Now sow, William Porter, or W. Editor Willamktti: Faumbu: I noticed in your paper of Fob. lit li an answer to tho question, " Whero raun a stick of Umber be cut so tint each of the two pieces chall con tain ono half of the entire frolld contents of tho whole? said stick to bo 12 Inches tquato at tho base, 0 iuchos square nt the top, nod 24 feet long" which answer doee not agree with mino. My solution is as follows: IjPt the given figure A 15 O D J be extended until It bi comes a pyramid. It Is evident that it will biconni a pyramid at the hlgbt of 48 feet. The content of a pyramid are found by mul tiplying the nr a of the base by one third the perpendicular hlghr. limes the contents nf the pyramid K I) C am, 144192 s'JTfMS cubic Ip., or 10 cubic fe. Top contents or tho pyramid E A IJ sre, 30s9J 3150 nubic inch es, or 2 cubic lci, Subtractlnir B the contents of the pyramid E a li from mo commits ot me pyramid E D C, gives the con tents of tho tisnre A B O D, P ',o 10214. Tlio contents of any pyramid, of the relative nropor lions of tho pyramid E A B, or EDO, is sixteen times the cube O of the squure root of tho area of tho baso that is, divide tho contents of nny pyramid (having tho sanio relative proportions as the pyramid E A B or E D C ) by 10, extract tiie cube root of the quotiaut, and it gives the squaro root of tho atea of the baso. Tho contents of the pyra ntel E A It 3-ljt) divided by 10, extracting tho cube root of tho quotient gives 0 as the squaro root of the area of its baso; also, the contents of the pyramid EDO 27043 divided by 10, extracting the cube root ct the quo tient gives 12 as tho squaro root of tho area of its base. Now, I wish to And tho area of tho base of tho pyramid E F G, whose couteuts shall be equal to the sum of the conteuts of the pyra mid E A IS (2 cubio Iff t) and ono half the given figure A H C D (7 cuhlc feet): fl cubic feet, or 1 5jj2 cubio inches. Dividing tho con- touts by 10, and extiactlng the cube root of tlio quotient givos the square loot of the area of tho base ; equarlng tho result gives the area of the base, 9S.01. Dividing tbe con tents by the aroa of the base gives ono third of tho perpendicular hight, lfiS.fjr; multiply ing by 3 gives 475 St inches, or 39 foot 7.S inches, tho hight of tha pyramid E F G. Subtracting 21 feet, the hight of tho pyramid E A B. gives tho required distanco from tbe lino A IJ to F G, 39 feet 7 St inches minus 24 feet eq lals 15 feet 7.8t inches from tho top of the given figure, or 8 foot 4 2- inches from tho base. As I am only n farmor'n boy, aud uotn mathematician, 1 won't siy but that there tn.iy bo mi easier way of working this exam ple. If any one knows of such a way, ho will confer n favor by giving it in tho col umns of thG I'AllMKr.. II. A. Cornell. Portland, Fob. 21, 1870. Can you Pay Up1?
