No. 3. AT A fcOClARM:. Sociables tiro supposed to bo excep tionally pleasant places to frequent. A sociable lias such a co?y .sound. Who has not been deluded into donning wrappings and holiday smile, and s-oine good nuturod poions have boon known to keep on their everyday ones, but these eases are rare, and rushing off determined to have an "awful good time " as school girls say. I did that not long ago; my mind was filled with tho most pleiiMint anticipations, all tho way to the church, but an air of chilly constraint fell upon me as I entered tho door and was greeted by tho sight of some most woe-begono looking mortals standing stiilly against the will, as if they had been in mischief and woro thus puni.-hed, while groups of listless faced pleasure-seekers sat hero and there through the room, occasionally exchanging a word or two,;iut for tho the moat part keeping their eyes fixed mi inn uotir wun tin expectant looic as though waiting for some one who did not come. I concluded that a retired corner would perhaps bo better to take refuge in and thence follow the general course of taking observations. Tliero were the ubiquitous refreshment tables. For tho average sociable-goer cannot bo socrable without laying the foundation for tho American's pet disease dys pepsia. Also there were tho tables fnf .,,.. ,Vnrk rnvnivxl vi(b -ml i.-nt,.l. M"CJ oi-coeieU Willi caul, watch, comb, and match c.ies, handkerchief boo- with the scores of useless trifles .. . , ,. , unit mines love 10 waste tneir timo up- on. I wr.-, urpricd to observe Air. In- fi(icl standing in front of one of tlieso table-!, listening with an air of hopeless bewilderment to tho chatter of the pretty creatures who besought him to nly this or that littlo nick-knack. Ho iijnnlly lriftc(l hitek to his positiou by tho Willi and wis seen at tiio tables no victimized to the extent of listening to a most melancholy selection by some one who, of cour-e, hud never read in public before. This explanation was hardly needed, as tiie audience, being possessed of ordinary intelligence, dis covered the fact soon enough. The se lection was a death-bed scene and tho ; reader proceeded to act it out in a high ly impressive manner, groaning, and giving spasmodic kicks and finally falling back with a "glazed and ghast ly glare," then with great coolness re viving to read tho concluding thoughts of the author. Tnoro wero nl--o one or two excellent reading?, to re-cuo tho evening from stupidity. Tho piano was at various intervals tortured by some ambitious misses. Then the grand business of tho evening com menced, namely, soi-viiifr refreshments. I can not remember who said that' "Americans aro all good feeders," un less it was Dickens, but I have no long er any doubt of the fact. Xow is tho time to bo sociable and smiles and nods aro visible in every direction. On every side ono hears exclamaniions of "wasn't it nice!" "o g.-od," "de lightful," etc. After all is over and wo return home tired and sober, wo think wo used to enjoy better, such is our taste, the old fashioned camp meetings at I'uckerbriish, or candy pulling at Jirackenside, where locality waited not on formality and pride. liUIUIIEItLA.
