8 WILLAMETTE FARMER. CattIiK Kings. A " Small Farmer" Jn otie of the nfrriciilturiil journalscom plains that all the dealers in line stock are " cattle kings," who are immensely rich and farm thousands of acres. Ho eaysthat,l)Lcause they are rich, therefore they hreed superior stock. We hazard tiio opinion that the reverse of this is more freqvently the case and that these .so-called cattle kings are rich because they hiivo taken to dealing in a better class of stock than their neighbors. TJiere aro many rontons why every farmer should endeavor to improve his stock. The largest and best blooded animals will not only fatten more eas ily but they will he worth more per ponna in tno mnrKct. 'mere is always h good demand for a superior animal for breeding purposes. Few farmers can see their neighborsdcalhig in lierk shircs and sleek Hhort-horns without wanting some themselves. And they Will bo willing to pay for them. Then no one can (leal in improved breeds without being benellted incidentally in innumerable ways. Ho will read more and better papers and books; learn to tako hotter care of his stock and farm; think more, labor less, and make more money. In fact lie will got rich because iio has dealt in fine stock. Iowa Fine Stock Gazette. The New York World says: "Two things especially tho grange does well. By promoting the interchange of ex periences and by establishing agri cultural libraries of reference, it is do ing a work the full value of which to the agricultural class and the commu nity at large, it would be difficult to overrule. It Is also doing a good work in educating tho farmers to investigate for themselves causes tho effect of whicli they feel. In Memoriam. In this beauteous Western land, Where a river wanders down, Mountain ranges on each hand White with Winter's shining crown, Where a valley spreadeth wide, Fair with gardens, rich with wheat, Fir-fringed hills on either side, Standing at the mountains' feet, In this lovely land, a life Grew, amid the sun and shower; Nature's stir, with beauty rife, Brought her treasures, every hour. Every bank of blue and gold, Wlldlltigs of the 8( rlug's sweet time, Gave her heart some store to hold Filled with melody of rhyme. Every lark-crowned oaken tree Dropped a morning rain of song, Every salt-hreeze from the sia Brought the breakers' tones along. Every puff of hhlnlng cloud, aieamlDgllke a dove's while breast, nj uayjr ujnuKuira crowa Talking or each precious nest, Every tangled fringe of grass, Waving In sweet June's delight, Hailed bf r, as she fain would pass, Bidding her their song to write. So. the beauty In her heart Grew too great to keep it there, And a bud began to atari, Fed by all of life most fair. Happy smile, and tender tear, Friendly offices and true, Loving hearts and words or cheer Lent to It each radiant hue. And one calm, propitious hour. 8uoh as to ail lives belong. Burst the bright and perfeot flower From her heart a flower aftong. And she caught the beauteous thing. Held It up to catch the light, But she found she could not bring Half Its loveliness to sight. Hidden In Ita wondrous folds, Musio dwelt, and tenderness, All the grace the garden holds, All or beauty's power to bless. Still, the sweetest words she found Failed to show Its fragrance rare, Softest toues of rythmic sound Trembled lifeless on the air. 8o she pressed the perfect bloom, Tenderly, between her palms, And its leaflets, like a plums, (In the summer's breezeless calms) Fluttered down a mossy glade, Shaded from the staring sun ; By their sweet perfume betrayed, There I found them this is one!
