The bop giowers of Central New York have formed an association for the purpose of ad vancing the interests of this branch of agricul ture. Oneida, Madison, Onondaga and Mont gomery counties were represented, and these combined form the most important hop dis trict of the United States. A committee composed of prominent hop growers reported the following resolutions, whloh were nnammously adopted: Jitsolved. That we, the hop growers of Modi son, Oneida and adjoining counties, are in favor of the enactment of a law regulating the size of boxes, and making it the duty of the Sealer of Weights and Measures to inspect and mark annually each box used by growers in which to pick hops, and making it a misde meanor to use boxes not thus inspected and marked. Together with Mr. Fumptlly, he was enpagod be the Japanese government, through its Com mercial Agent at dan Francisco, C W. Brooks, Esti , to act as mining engineer and geologist. This proposition emana'ed from the Cabinet of Tycoon, the island of Yesso being designated a th field of operations. Professor Blake and Mr. Pumpelly arrivtd in lokohatna after long as a mile of railway track remains, just so long win me ran layer, me railway, me loco motive, the car and the bridge builder's ser vices bo required on a inot extensive scale. The labor and expense of keeping up existing roads probably fully equals in amount the annual expenditures on new railway lint s, even iu prosperous yearn of railroad building. The following figures will probably surprise the most of our readers: During 1873 the Pennsylvania rnilroai cqm- ril'liinyiBflHDDDD liTifiliiiBssssssllIsssl MBPJMlPII III WWII MaLsW Carrinalon. Hakodate was made their base of operations, and they were given full discretion as to the method and extent of their work. Several Japanese stu dents accompanied them in their explorations, and in winter they gave instruction in mining engineering and geology to classes of native undents at Hakodate. It was discovered that the government had made some attempts at working mines in Yesso, and was even then conducting lead mining and a sulphur industry peuded for repairs on all th" railroads through out the Union. The point concerning the price to bo paid for lckii g bops was passed over by tho commit e, as was alfo the proposition for the estab lishment of a markot day for bops. The Cooperstown Journal, of August 19th. has the following hop item: "There bas been uninterrupted progress with the growing hop crop duting tho past week. With scarcely an exception the reports from far and near are to the effect that the crop will bo very largo, and from present appearances tbo crop will be good. Some of the early varieties are now beinu har vested, at d picking will begin all over the hop distriot of the State next week. Again we urge upon growers the great importance to them selves of unusual care in the picking and curing of their bops. And those who desire a ready sale should not select tbo heaviest sacking they can find, nor bring tbeir hops to market in small bales; these should range from 200 to 250 pounds. We learn from the Iteedeburg (Wis.) Free Press. August 2Ctb, that the hop growers of Sauk county, tho great bop district of Wiscon sin, met in convention at Iteedsbnrg, August 21st, and passed the following resolutions: 1st Establishing a uniform price of picking hops, at twenty-five cents per box and board. 2d. Whon poDplo talk about "money in wheat," they are tupposod to refer to the money that is to como out of it to compensate tho producer; but before it can be converted into the bread we eat, it must bo manipulated by the tight fisted money lender as well as by tho hard-fisted farmer or fair handed house-wifo. And even though "the farmer feedeth all," he is not ex pected to do it in the spirit that the bird feedoth its young. He must bo paid for it; and before he can get his pay, other hands than the tra ditional "homy" ones must tako hold of the grain. The Record-Union thus points out somo of the complicated conditions between money and wheat: "Wbilo tho production of wheat has not been as large in this Stato this year as it was last, or has been for the past three seasons, the prico it commands is good, and consequently a larger amount of money is required to move tho present orop in proportion to its bulk. Tho farmers' money is legitimately cm ployed in the production, and, as a tule, tho necessities of tho farmor jendor it imperative that bo should roalizo on his year's products at an early nay attor getting tuom ready for mar ket. As the wheat orop of tho Stato is road for markot at about tbo same time a very large amount ot luonoy is rcquirod to pay tuo pro ducers for it, and to move it from tho iuteri or to.tho seaboard and place it on vessels, where it must be before English money can bo ob tained for it. In commercial phrase, it re quires money to move tbo wheat crop. It was impossible, however, Professor Blake dis covered, to obtain any satisfactory information as to the mineral wealth of the island; and he determined that only actual investigation would enable him to ascertain with what minerals he bad to deal, and how Japanese labor could be best utilized for their development according to the most approved modern methods. The summer months were spent in explorations of the mining localities within 125 to 150 miles of Hakodate, extending ovor tuo greater part ot tho country lying to the north and west of Vol cano Bay. Professor Blake made several ex peditions of this character, returning each time to Hakodute and reporting progress to the governor. The party travelled upon horseback, and woro kindly and hospitably treated at tho various Japanese inns where they stopped. They subsisted in great part upon Japanese food, being able to obtain good fish iu almost every locality. Salmon nnd other fine varieties abound in tbo rivers, and are caught in large numbers by the Ainos. Trout also are plenti ful, especially in the upper parts of the river and In their brunches; great quantities aro caught and dried, forming an important articlo of export. Among the many marine pro ducts utilized by the inhabitants and mado arti cles of commerce, are the coarser varieties of seaweed. The bottor kinds aro found on the western coast, as also a great many other sea products, such as brfebe-de-mer, echini, haliotis and cuttle fish. Game abounds in tho interior,. loer horns being an important article of export. The population of Yesso is over estimated. Hakodate and Matamai aro the principal cities. There are a number of Japauese trading and fishing villages along the coast each way from Hakodate, but as 'one goes farther north the number of Ainos, or "hairy u.en" increases. Thoy penotrate the furthest recesses of the mountains in tho interior, hunting and fishing. and from them is gained tho best knowledge of tbo interior. They pay tribute in many ways to tbo Japaneso, and aro, apparently, very dooilo aud gontlo. Physically they are well formed, muscular and active. Under proper guidance they would, undoubtedly, be of great use as laborors. Their habitation extends even to Sagalin and tho Kuril islands, and all names of rivers, mountains, etc., north of Volcano bay are Aino. Tho interior of Yesso is moun tainous and rugged, but covered with a fine growth of docitluous trees, the onk and chest nut, particularly, abounding. A considerable way system of the United States are perfectly astounding, and would have been thought ut-1 terly improbable if not impossible a quarter of I a century ago. In no way, perhaps, can an idea of tho national progress and wealth of the country be better formed than by a cousidera'ion of the labor, machinery and capital involved in the railway system of the country. The question of the control and management of this immense ' and powerful interest, is becoming one of the very first importance. I s proper management I is absolutely essential to national prosperity. I The people cannot afford to allow an open an tagonism between it and themselves. lUilroad corporations are creatures of the government the people. If they fail to give reasonable satisfaction the power that made must and will i re-make, and re-adjust on principles of equity. If j the riant to do so is out of our reach, we are living under an oligarchy infinitely more dan gerous than the most absolute autocracy which ' oxists on earth. I The Habits of the Trout. The trout is, compared to every other Eng lish river fish, exceedingly swift and keen sighted, and this peculiarity is shown in its mode of seizing its prey. The so-called coarse fish, the dace, roach and chub, bang about in shoals in mid water, or nearer the top than tho bottom of the river; and when they feed on flies, they lift themselves in a somewhat leis urely, and, as it were, meditative way to the surface, and suck in the insect in a particularly sure and deadly way. If that fly happens to bo artificial and to conceal a barbed hook, the very determined manner in which it is seized, and in which the fish slowly turns and sinks below the surface, ensures its being firmly im planted in the leathery jaws of the dace, chub ' or roacn. it is nardiy necessary lor tne "an gler" to strike to give that slight turn of the wrist on which so much depends in fly-fishing I lor trout, very aim-rent is it witn tne trout. He seldom disports himself in mid water. He is serious, and not, like the so-called "coarse fish," a gregarious animal." He loves conceal ment, and be loves solitude.
