It is true (hat politicians must differ, but it Is unhappily true at the present time that as much difference occurs In parties a between parties. It Is diffi cult to draw party lines at a time when each State and each section frame? j platforms to suit the local feelings and wants, without regard to unity of na tional Ideas. The question of finance divides each party more or less, and it suits itself more to the local Idea than to any exigency of national policy. As It is one that enuallv interests all ! we can afford to look into it. A few venrs uoro Mr. Pendleton of Ohio proposed to cancel the outstand ing national indebtedness by an issue of currency at par. This was a wild scheme the peoplo have repudiated as dishonorable and politicians have aban doned it entirely. We do not confound with this the proposition to issue a tow interest bearing bonil convertible into currency, and convertible ngaln at will Into a Iwnd. It Is proposed by such- a plan to supply the country with all the currency it need, adjustable as the wants of commerce shall direct and prescribe, and the pkm certainly has merits. We copy in this issu, a short edito rial firom C'olman' Rival World intro ducing the views of Gen. Spinner, for tliejlast fourteen years. Treasurer of the United States. We have yet to be convinced that those views nre not cor rect. The National Kinks are now a great money power, awl of course dan gerouii to the extent that they ha hellish ends to carry out. We see no reason- why the people .should support that frystom at a cost of many million per annum, when it is-Just as conveiw ient and safe to make the national cun reney the only paper money of the country, and allow all banks to do busi ness a it is now done- by the private bankiofthe Pacific coast. A currency to be- adjusted to tJte want" of the country- would not be an inflation. Such a cusreney could be- as easily made redeemable- in gold as any other. Tne National Banks are not safer as national depositories than ot& er well conducted banks and their nates are not ami cannot be as valuable as.rhe greonbneks. Why then shall we- tax the eople to pay many millions tonus to sustain these national banks and create a money pewer that cannot bo easily controlled or-restrained? A.pow-et-that in fact is able to defy hostile legislation at wilt. To a reasonable mind, that has-Jtoiio-titical scheme in view and no jKirtisan ends to accomplish, it is evident that we need abundant money or currency to do the business of the country. That currency should have a lived and permanent value, and that value 'hoitld bo based on specie, the true and only standard of value known to all na tions. Then it stilkes us that instead of such nu Incongruous war of words mid conflict of selfish Interests in rela tion to this matter of finance, Congress, without regard to party plans and ma chinations, has threo things to do, first: provide sufficient currency or money to satisfy the demands of trade; second: secure that currency by mak ing It redeemable at pleasure in gold coin, which can be accomplished by making it transfcrrable into a national band bearing a moderate rato offdntor est; third: do away with a banking system that is a monopoly and a tax on tito people to sustain it and K becoming able to defy public! opinion and control legislation to suit its own ends. Gen. Spinner has long experience to guide his judgment and wo have rea son to believe him honest, which i more than can bo said of many men who have had his chances to speculate on the treasury. Evidently Gon. Spin ner does not spoak as a politician, and what wo need is public men who will sink partisan Ideas and try to serve the country. California Fruit Dryer. Mr. Georae A. Delia calls on us to aay that be will exhibit this fruit dryer next week on the State Fair ground. This maohlne manu fiotured raialna during the time the Stale rVlr of California was being held, and they took tho premium over all competitors. The machine eo-U from $10.1 to SoO, aud so Is within tuo reach of all fruit-growers, as he thinks. If it does half ho says It vl'.l its value to Oregon will bo great, and there will be a grout detuind for tliein, Tho fruit crop of California being a failure, he couuh to sit- lsfy Oregoniaus of w hat he can do, and to no compliih this he aaya he will bavo a machine in lull operation on the ground every day of our coming State Fair. If wo shall have pleasant weather next week wo mav look for the most successful State Fair that ever took place In our State. Tiiere Is a general interest manifested that is favorable, and tho prospect of at least inoderately good times will incline the people to make the most of their week of holi day. We hope our friend will all do- their share toward securing the success of the display. We can assure then that the Agricultural Society has done its part well and that every preparation possible has been made to accommocikite the thousands who will be present,, as well m the article and objects to- be exhibited. New AgricultuiHl Machines. Mr. M. Ayem, of the Orm of D. M. Obura A Co. Auburn, N. Y., arrived on tbe last steamer with a number of machines to ex hibit at the coining State 7alr, consisting of a combined maper and mower, single self-rak-inic reaper,.llKh mower, and horse hay-rake, niHGUfaoturexl by bin flrmi but never before Introduced Into Oregon. He proposes to re main in onr State to Introduce them, for several years to oome. My. Ayres entered these machines at the late (Mate Fair of Cali fornia, and received diplomas for his reaper, combined reaper and mower, and rake, after a aharn cortteat with numerous other in a chtnea. He claims to represent the largest mower and reaper manufatory In the United States, and he says his concern desires to come Into tbe most direct relations possible with our people. Editoh V,f.i.i.AMKTrK Fabmbr: I have notloed in yor valued roluuius everal artl oles ou shiptjing beer to Liverpool lu barrols or tierces by Bailing vessel. T wish to give your readers-the benefit of the little experi ence I bad --with a single tlerio as an experi ment. Tho- price of mess or corned beef in the Liverpaei market, ax you are probably aware, is sufficient for the shipper to realize a profit oriithe present prico- In Eastern Or egon, and after paying tbiv usual freights via the Horn; providing that tho meats can lie so paolted as to keep la good couditlou until the arrival of tho vessel iu Liverpool. I first received 'tery'parti'cuilar lustructlotui indirectly from a Llverpoolillrm In tbe bnsi nosa, as to how tbe beef should be packed) tu order to keep durlug the long voyage through ihe tropics iu good order. I took the orders to u packer who has tbe uaino of being ao.goud a meat-packer as auy lu tho Stale, who put up a tiejae for me tor ship ment. I believe all the instructions were car ried out, and that every rare was takon, to have liiti lierco in the vary best order, with one e.M-uptlou.utid I thlsk, thut Immaterial tho substitution of wooden hoops for iron ones. I shipped the lierco ou 0110 ot tbe ships of the grain fleot, aud it spoiled on tbo way. Here is an extract from tha letur I re ceived iu regard to it: "Tbe meat is quite black, aud when cooked is very hard. There Is no chance of it selling iu the Uver puol market at any price; in fact, t do not think it tit lor human food, the upper edges being 'all alive.'" My concluslcus are that it is uusafe to make large shipments of tierce beef to Liv erpool, eveu wlieu packed by tbe most skill ful. Iu Australia largo quantities of meats are shipped to Grvut Britain in tiu cnua; wby will it uot p.ty to do tbe same here? Yours, Aroi's'rcs O. Kinnkv. Centennial Display. Hou. A. J. Dufur informs us that he 2s making arrangements to exhibit ut Ihe coin lug SUto Fair the vatious articles already received which are destined for exhlbltou at tho Centennial Imposition next year at Phil adelphia. We cannot think of any display that will be more Interesting; and we further suggest that our energetic Centennial Com missioner can add very greatly to his collec tion by making stlections of noteworthy ob jects that are sure to bo en exhibition at tbe State Fair, which the producers will cheer fully contribute for the purpose or swelling our display at Philadelphia.
