The vpncrablo Tliiirlow'vVi'Pcl pub lishes n long urticlo in tlio Now York Herald cotiiprninp the Morgan nbduo tion, in untl-.M:iMiik: times, and in whii'h he liu.s heon iRTMinally concerned for nearly halt a century. In 18-0, Wil liam Morgan, vvho pulillshed a book, being the alleged exposition of tho secrets of Ma&imry, disappeared, and the genergl opinion was that he met his death by drowning in the "Nhigiir.. lUver, and that the deed was done by Free Mumms. For botne years the poli ties of ICew York liinged upon that affair. Some months after Morgan's disap pearance, u body was found in Luke Ontario, and there being a doubt as to its identity, the Ma.sons claimed that it had been trimmed to correspond with tho body of Morgan, and among the electioneering stories was one to the ef fect that Thurlow Weed bud said the body found was a " good enough Mor gan until niter election. " Some weeks .since this old story was revived, and in order to clear himself of, the injurious imputation which lias clung to him nearly fifty years, Mr. AVeed gives a particular history of the whole attain lie says that in 1831 John Whitney, of Kochester, related to him all tho circumstances connected with the murder of Morgan, which deed was done by William King, John Whitney, a Mrlloward, Mr. Chubbuck, and a Mr. Garoide, who drowned Morgan in tho A'irgura. All tho parties to the affair are now dead. A year atter tho drown ing u body was found, nnd the widow of Morgan gave such convincing testi mony that a jury of inquest returned that the body was that of Morgan, and it was buried at JJ.itavia. Afterwards a woman named Monroe, whoso husband had gone over Niagara Falls in a small boat, claimed that the body was that of her husband, and another inquest was held, at which Mrs. Monroe testified o positively to the clothes worn by tho deceased as to convince the jury that the body was that of her husband, Tim othy Monroe. And so the mystery re mains to this day. Soon after tels last ilimicst and lust be fore the election, Weed met a Mr. Grittin who was counsel for the Free Masons that were tried for the murder of Morgan, and Griftln said: " Well, Mr. Weed, what are you going to do lor n Morgan now?" And Weed replied : "That is u good enough Morgan until you bring back tho ono you earried away." This remark the Ilocili ester Advertiser distort ed into " That is. a good Morgan until af ter election, " which lust expression has stuck to Weed for llfty yeuis. It docs not appear fioni Mr. Weed's narrative that the Masonic order was re sponsible for tho diowniug of Moigun. 'lhoenterpiise originated at a wine sup per, wlieio the ji.ntli'H implicated were inllamed by liquor. The catastrophe is related us lollows: ' Morgan walked with them to the wharf, where a boat was held in rcudiuct-s tor them by Flisbu Adams, an invalid boldier, into which the paity passed and lowed awn v. Adams remaining to vain the boat oil' uy signal it on its return any alaini had been given. It was nearly ii o'clock in the morning when the boat came back, having, as Adams expressed it, lost one man, only live of taeslx being on board when the bout le turned When the boat reachi'd a point whero the Niagara River empties into Luke Oatario, a rope being wound aiouud Moigan's body, to either end of which a sinker was attach ed, ho was thrown ovcruoaril." The above, which wo copy from the editorial columns of the Bulletin, recalls a conversation tho writer of this once had with Dr. Warren, somo years feinco a citizen of Salem, in which he narrated his experience as a Mason in tho vicinity of llutuvia, X. Y., about the time of Morgan's dis.ippcnr.incc. Soon after his initiation, tho lodge had a visitor wiio gave the particulars of the death ot Morgan, about as it is related above, and the ellect on our old friend was such that ho never visited tho lodge again. IIo also gave the name of ono ofthoo who made, away with Morgan as "Win King," and added the information, not to be revealed while ho should live, that this was no other than Col. Win. M. King, so well known in connection with early lifo in Portland and Oregon politics under the territorial government. I'huit DitvKit 8()Ln.
