The Salmon Trade In reviewing lbo Columbia river salmon trade fbr tho past tsaason, the Atlorian says; From the best information at hand we may estimate the yield at 223,,M0 to 239,000 cises in rouud num bers. The season opened with anything but an encouraging outlook which prevented some from making any preparations Tor bus iness whatever, whilst other were deterred from operations beyond half their capacity to work. At no time during the season were any of nhose short ot ttsh; on the -contrary, nouo were able to work up the fullest supply brought in daily. The discouraging features of tun business at the start have been traced to a few interested in speculation, but it will never be able to occur again we think. The reason oloses with s firm and ready market, at good prices, for export, while tbojhome market l comparatively without any sup ply. Prices have - been tower this year, throughout the 'season, than for 1874. Last yean sales were based upon an average of about $0 per ease, or $1 45 to $1 50 per dozen 1 lb can. .This year prices have ranged from $1 80 to f 1 39 per doxen. iFire at BrowN8VH.dk The Oregonian says that on Friday morning at VA oViook, a lire was discovered in the rear ot a large two story building occupied below by the Brownsville M'fg Co. as a stoie and above as their tailor shop, and owned by the old Ea gle Woolen Mills Co. When the alarm whs given it was too late to eiive it, so all hands werti employed in preventing the Ore froui catching iu tho neighboring buildings, and, also In removing all the merchandise possi ble frdru the buildlnir store room. Thu en tire amount of stock wrh about $3,000, of which only about (J,000 was reoveiod. A can of niaut powder wan in the flames, and strange to say there was no explosion; it only melted like so muou lard. Too wind wax favorable or no doubt the eutirw town ot North Brownsville would huve been wrapt iu Utrces. .The fire originated from a stove In toe tailor shop. Imuupdkd in Solid Kocic Mr. Fred. Clark, while engaged in diggiug v. cellar on his htrui near Mount Tabor, about three uilliw from East Portland, lost week, came across a small toad at a distance of seven teet below the surface oi the ground. For near ly that distance Mr. Clark worked through what is known as limestone cement, which is almost as solid as rook. It was with ex treme difficulty that he could dig through the nearly impenetrable strata with the aid of a pick, At the depth mentioned, the toad was found Imbedded in a little spaaa not lar- gerjthan one's hand, entirely cut off from the outer world. It was alive aud in a good state of preset vatlon, and when liberated from its living toniu noppea off as lively as a cricket. When and how the creature became encased In its earthen prison, we leave for the geolo gist and naturalist th tell. The toad Is on exebltlon at Kaftety's drug store, East Port laud. Orc0onr;i.
