-WILLAMETTE FARMER. i Uccklcss .Financial Management. If tliore js anjr pot of earth whore the wofltl move. Vaster ( than elsewhere, ami whore ttoth' business anil socinl tftiiiis iire conrfuctetl.in ti style reckless and rap id beyond the' possibility of -afety, tliut legion is California, and the central point af reckless display And speculation is the city of Sun Francisco. Our own State copies after the most sober life of the East, and afibnls a striking contrast to the state of things existing with our southern neighbor. Wo may well con guitulatc ourselves that such is the case. Tiue, we have not the sudden means of wealth and the temptation to ostentation and fast living theic nU'ouled, and we doubt if we have reason to desire it. Such wealth, though mo3t piccariotis, brings with it temptation to speculation of the most unhealthy kind, and the pe riods of levulsion are as certain us the seasons of great success. But yesterday, to the uninitiated, the Bank of California, with its live mill ions of capital, seemed a pillar of stiength and a mine of wealth. Its President, AV. C. KaMon, known as a man of vast entcrpiiso and great eneigy, wasapiinee among merchants, a king among financier, and his home, twotity I've miles fiom San Francisco, was kept up with a state and liberality of hospi tality that were a matter of astonish ment eveu to Culifomlausi To and from that home arid his office in the city he drove each day with his four-in-hand, like a whirlwind. Guests he entertain ed by the hundred; vast enterprises were moulded by his mind, and made success ful by his will; and the story of Aladdin and his lamp, the most wonderful'offtlie Tales of the Arabian Nights, was:arpe ly lnore wonderful thun the'life and his tory of the great banker, to whose will all things seemed to bow, and whose story seemod only paralleled by the magulliccnt Palace Hotel, of which he was one of the chief designers and pro prietors. Tho bank and its president seem to have been drawn into the wildest schemes and speculations that have characterized the reckless course of Cali fornia stock-gambling, and of Into the papers are tilled with the story of its lamentable failure, and tjic even sadder story is told to us of the death of Ral ston, who seems to have trespassed upon the trust confided to him and used the funds of the corporation for his private purposes. Tho bank is Krokeu, the mag nificent man for, whatever may be said, the man was magnificent is dead, and we need not pause to decide if his fate was suicide or apoplexy to draw a moral therefrom and learn an iiupoitaut lesson. Making haste to bo rich is not healthy. The speculations of stock gamblers are as vicious, though unfortunately not considered so dishonorable as the opera tions of the faro table. Tho true sphere of man, which he may legitimately fol low and expect the blessing of God and tho respect of his fellow man, is that which relates to the everyday 'wants of the world about him. He that cultivates the earth or does something to add to the happiness or welfare of his fellow man, has more satisfaction in life, even though ills lot be poor and humble, than If he realized sudden wealth from vicious schemes, and lived in tho false excite ment of unhealthy speculations that thrive only on the losses of those who trust them. The Contemplated Wool-Growers' Con- leniion. E. Fakmek: I am glad to see the subject of a convention of tho wool growers of this State Is receiving atten tion at your hands, and I sincerely hope that tho approaching State Fair will not be allowed to pus without an ef fort being made to form a wool-grower's and sheep breeders' association, at which T, as one engaged In both pur suits, would be glad to see representa tives of our woolen manufacturers and shippers of wool to distant manufactur ers invited, so that the wool grower can learn from those most interested what kinds of wool it would bo best for him to produce, and the breeder also receive Intimations of changes that may be necessary for him to make, and the whole chain of interests con nected with our clothing supply may be welded together by mutual under standing of the real character of their interests.
