HOOD HIVER VALLEY, The following description ot thl quiet lit tle valley, situated In the Cascade Mountains near the base of Mount Hood, we extract from n letter to tbe Oorvallls Gazette of lant week: This valley l uearlv twenty miles lone, and has n nvprave width oi ten toiler. Well watered, ind -ueh witerl nl'ered from the eternal drtn of Hood. Iis"em w tltoruti life would Iki-Vi rltli'g If we could always have such a or rc drink. V Is aln heavily timbered pine, ork. and fir being the nnt abundant. 'Ibis im undnuh'odly n nlock raixlnu country, the ranen brim; iinllniueii and grans tllt'n. I: Is no harder to kt.op li ek here than In anv other plare east of the mountains, last winter being the tnimt Keveie tor some yearn past; and there was little or no stock lost, though ieeil being mired In the velley to keep them. The valley Ilea directly between Mount Hood and Adam furthsr to the north ere aen the mow-covered peaks of Hi. Helen and Rainier. Tbe weather as Ihe present time, during tbe day, la very warm the last four dava the ther mometer Mood as high hhIAj" Intbenhade hut the night were conl and pleasant, Wheat dees well here, alxo vegetables and fruits, especially melons and teaches, tbe lust being considered tbe best and linen aled in the Slate. There is only one doctor la tbe valby, and he does not praclice, for Hie reason that the praclice would not pav fjr the license. Hood river, which Is foriufd from the snows of Hood, runs Ihe lensth ot the valley, and its waters antl the waters of ls tributaries abound with myriads of tbe finest mountain and salmon trout. He i considered a poor fisherman, indeed, who cannot catch from seventy to ore hundred trntir in three or rour hours' rwiilng. uamt Is very plenty, such as deer, bear, nnd elk, and farther I auk in the mountains panthers abound. Heretofore we have otilv cot our mill once a week, but hereafwr will Ret It twiep. It Is brought by the boat, which will laud anv time for passengers. There is not any wagon road from here to the Dalles, that beinc the nearest trading point, and as the distance Is only twenty-lhreo miles, a little labor would construct n Rood road. There are two district school houses In the vallev, and should be two schools taught tbroo mnnthsof the year, as it Is there Is only one taught. There is also a good saw mill In the center of the valley. There are yet several pieces of government land thar ndaht be ta ken up and made into comfortable homeu. ALAS FOR IT! Our stato ngent, Brother J. G. Otis, in a neat little speech, delivered before the Douglas county central council, struck tho key-note when ho said that "before ve ciin nttiiin any success in co-operation, it is absolutely necessary for us to have confidence in each other." Wc most heartily concur with Broth er Otis. Let u full and complete con fidence bo established throughout our order all over this broad land, then will our social and fin mcial prosperity become at once a glorious success. Brother and sister Patrons, can you not with almost prophetic eye see tho abun dant prosperity that would seek us out, and almost fuuo itself upon us if wo should all so act as to inspire tho fullest confidence? Now, how is this tn bo accomplished? Did any of you ever hear tho following sentiments? If you did not, we want you to study it earetully. "In our deal ings with our fellow-men be honest, be just; avoid intemperance in eating. drinking nntl language; bo quiet and peaceful ci:i.eu; feed tho hungry, help tho fatherless and tho widows." Perhaps a careful atttdy of the above will holy ti-, to t-olvo the piobleiuol'liow wo shall net so that full covfldnncc may come. We want to call particular at tention to that put of the sentiment quoted wliero it says avoid intemper- unco ir. language. Untold mischief may bo dono by thoughtless words spoken or published. We must learn to control our tongues; wo cannot build up our order nor usher in the day of confidence, by growling and finding fault, and picking lhws in the conduct of othvr people. Wo do1 not wish to prolong this article, nnd will closo by asking the following: Is it because wo cannot net in such it manner that our brothers and sisters will have confi dence iu us, or is it heiatiso wo will not thus act? Kansas Spirit. Dh. Haves ox Tin: English Po i,.n Expedition. Dr. I. T. Hayes is reported as speaking very favorably of (he English exploiing expedition re cently fitted out for tho North Pole. It is better equipped than any expedi tion that has over been fitted out by any country for purely .scientific, pur poses. Dr. Hayes says: "Their ships are better, their appointments are bet ter, antl besides thoy are suro to have discipline, which tho Polaris had not: yot, for all that, tho Polaris reached! there without any tumble. In fact, her wholo passage from Now York to that highest latitude which any ship over attained was as easily performed as if sho had been sailine; from Now York to Liverpool. l-Jvetybody acquainted with Arctii! navigation knows that drifting ice is very changeable, obey ing with remarkable rapidity tho form of tho winds, and in navigating tho Polar fens, when ico is ahead, you have only to wait for a favorable wind, lint Capt. Hall discovered a 'pack' in Iiob oson channel, by which ho designated the extension of Kennedy channel, and awaited an opportunity to push through it. I believe as llrmly as I be lieve anything that they could have got into tho open sea, and .steamed away it distance of remaining Kill odd miles between that and tho pole without ob struction. 1 do not believe land extends very far north in that quarter." 5'V"i':1 V.W. m.- '.it .... .
