Permit us to state that, although we are
favored witli the increase of docks, tho
improvement of fecrds, the prospect of a
bountiful harvest and prolific mines, yet
our general market is limited and money
scarce, or but little in circulation. We
need better facilities for the transporta
tion of our surplus products, or, what is
better, the oirtablishmeut of home
manufactures, thereby oonverting the
raw material into availability for con
sumption, and creating a permanent
home market. Win. Clunk, superintend
ent of the Wiunemuccu Wagon Itoad is
now at work on that lino, and if cheaper

State of tne Wheat Market in California.
From tho 8. F. Commtrcial Herald of last
week vie take the following, which gives fall
particulars of the lato rise and fall of the
Liverpool qnoUtlons and describes the then
condition of the wheat market in California :
A week since reference was made to the
rapid advance both here and elsewhere the
total rUe for the past fortnight being from
$1 75$225 for new crop, with an occasional
lot or choice old at $2 ZtViV ctl for milling.
At the advanced rates many large purchases
were consummated in the Interior and a num
ber of cariioes placed here for account of ship
owner! more willing to buy grain than to
accept charters to the United Kingdom at ill
or thereabouts. On the 2(!th of July prices
reached the highest altitude, say i 2S
2 27K, but before the opening of Exchange
on ibe 27tb, 'Liverpool cablegrams were re
ceived noting a decline for the 24 hours
or 8dI0d. This unexpected intelligence
stugKored all buyers, bom here and in the
Interior, and trade Immediately ceased buy
ers with one accord withdrawing and offer
inn only $22 10 for lots, which the day be
fore tliev would gladly have purchased at
$2202 25. The standing ordersBOt by the
Grander oraolesto the country was "not to
still." The result of this Is manliest many
large orop owneia that could have closed out
tl-elr entire crops at high figures and pocket
ed the cash, have now to stem the current for
a while longer and take the chances of a
future market. Transaodons tor the week
as repotted embmes the following: July 21st,
100 tons choice old milling, at l 23; 100 tons
dr, now, 2 15; 22d, 3,000 tons for export,
220; 2.000 ctls old milling, $2 25; 2 500ctls
do very choice, $2 27J4; later on, 20 000 tons for
export at $2 20; 1.000 fcks new, $2 20; 1.000 sks
old, $2 27 Ji; 6,000 Ions sold at $2 252 '1VA
for new and old. For the past two uajs no
easiness of importance has been done, and
we very much question whether $22 10
cnuld be obtained at date for any consider
able quantity of oholce wheat. The market
closes flat. We submit the Liverpool Wheat
market of July 28tb. 1873 average, lOi 2il

Sinoa the above was placed iu type we are
informed of two purchases that were con
cluded on the 27th of 500 tons each for export,
at $2 152 20, respectively.
Hauvest in L.vnk. The Eugene Guaul
says;
The farmers of Lann county havo com
menced cutting the early sowed grain, and
from present promsots ttie oroin will ileld
as much as was anticipated. Tim early s)vv
ed cnilu Is well lilltid, the grain l)fili)ir full
and plump, uram tnat was put lu early, or
put in witu cultivators or urtus is irom
twemy to filty percent, better than late grain.
or that sowed broad-cdsl and covered with
hariows. Hence it is demonstrated that it
pays bautlsotnely to cultivate the soil well,
jitit your grain in in propr time, and cover
it with n cultivator or put It lu with a drill.
Grain must have time at the proper reason
to grow, and It inunt ha put lu the soil deep
enough to get substantial root or it cannot
thoroughly mature. Our farmers have had
oxperlunce enough by tliU time to prove to
them that they can cot ralie good crops with
out properly cultivating the soil. This thing
of skimming over the ground in plowing,
and then scratching in the grain with a light
harrow will nut insure good crops.
