WILLAMETTE FARMER. A Copper Wonder. There is now on exhibition in St. Lonis a mass of native copper that is attracting mach attention, and which -will be exhibited at the Centennial at Philadelphia next year. It waB taken from a mine on' the Islo Royal, Lake Suporior, is heart-shaped, and weighs 6,000 pounds, exceeding by nearly doable the weight of the famous copper boulder which was trans ported many years ago from the same region to the Smithsonian, Institute, at a oost to the gov ernment of $5,810. The specimen exhibits the pure copper to the eye, and contains ninety eight per cent. of the metal. It was taken from an ancient mine about seventeen feet be low the surface, and when found had evidently been detached from its beu by the ancient miners. A number of pieces of copper bo aides the mass were found, weighing from an ounoe to seventeen pounds, evidently clipped 'by the old miners. Stone (hammers weighing from ten to thirty 'pounds have also been found by the hundred, either perfect or broken from use. To what race these' ancient miners be longed and at what period they flourished,-' can only be conjeotured. Probably they beln;td to tho prehistotiq mound '.bnildera, who worked in metals long anterior to the Indian races. At least, numerous evidences' of their occii panoy were discovered by theearly Jesuit ,ex plorers,jwhileA8pecimens clipped by them from the copper, rocks, have; been found scattered over nearly the .Whole country. , To Mace Lias Pirn Bam: to Use fob Dkink ino Watkb. It is very generally known that lead is more.or leas.acted upon by. drinking water, and thus rendered unsafe to iuse. for conduct ing the same for any great distance. Tinning on the inaide.has been.employed as n remedy for the evil; but on account of cost or.for some other reason, 8nchpipeJ)as"not come into very generaLnse., ,What.ia supposed to be a better remedy hWbeeu patented by Dr. H. Schwartz, of Breslan. HiB device consists in treating lead pipe for ten or fifteen minutes with a two to fiveper cent, sblution.'bf snlphuret of potas sium'dr sodium, at a temperature of 212. A boiling solution of sulphur in caustio soda Ib found to answer the same purpose. This treat ment causes the formation on the surface of the pipe of a thin coating of snlphuret of lead. A strong proof of the insolubility of snl phuret of lead is the fact that water from (,-lena mines never contains a trace of lead. Still, a doubt might arise as to the eqnal power of the artificial sulphuret to resist the notion of water. Fortunately, here, too, we have experimental proof to rely upon. The Chemical Bulletin, of Paris, refers to a series of experiments with pipe coated after the method of Dr. Schwartz. These pipes were exposed, at the same time with other unpro tected pipes, to tho action of rain water, snow water, distilled water and the city water. On the following day he found a perceptible quan tity of lead in the water which ran through the unprotected pipes, except in the case of city water, where traces of lead wero found after a few days. For three months, however, and in the' presence of air, the coated pipes did not contaminate the water flowing through them. For the benefit of those interested in Schwartz's process, we would say that the de tails are given in the specification of patent Mo. 1519 of the British Patent Reports for 1863. Nklaton's Treatment or Boils. A French medieil journal says that Nelaton for more than twenty years prescribed the use of alcohol for the prevention of these smaller abscesses, whiob are so common among-t young people, and which to seriously impair the beauty of the face. It appears that this treatment is now extending, as some interesting details are to be found in a communication of M. Simon de Forges, of Sainte-Fouilnine, which appears in tho Jieuue de Therapeutique In speaking of boils, small outward abscesses, and other in flammations of the epirdemisnndof the derma, he observes that as soou as the characteristic circular redness appears on any part of the body, whatever may be its size, with a point rising in the middle, m.itinR it a grayish white, a thimbleful of camphorated alcohol should be poured into a saucer; the palm of the hand should bo wetted with it, and this should be rubbed with a gentle friction over the affected place. The fingers should be again steeped, and the friction continued as often ns eight or ten times every half minute. The place should be well dried, and before covering it up a little -camphorated olive oil should be applied to pre vent the evaporation of the fluid. Gas Wells. Our predictions of some yeirs since generally deemed at the time fit matters de lunatteo inquirendo as to the immense national importance of natural gas in the near future, are being slowly but surely verified. Among the numerous statements is one that borings for oil on the Bed Bank creek, far east of the Butler oil field, gave torrents ot gas. A 'Western Pennsylvania paper tells us also that "a number of wells will be put down in Beaver valley for natural gas. Messrs. Blake & Fes aenden intend putting one down for the use of their file works. The owners of the paper mill at Beaver Falls intend putting one down also, and it is rumored that a oompany have leased the wells at Bennett's Ban, to convey the gas to Beaver Falls, where it will be furnished for fuel." We also learn from Pittsburg, May 13lb, that "a line has been surveyed, along which it is proposed to run a six inch pipe for the purpose of conveying the natural gas from the well near Sarversville, Butler county, to this city. It has been estimated that this size of pipe can carry a million feet of gas every twenty-four hours." Petbolbuii Fuel. All steamers navigating the Caspian Sea burn petroleum exclusively. A blast of steam gives the liquid petroleum evon distribution under the boilers. Some con tending patentees exhibited some systems of this sort here, three or four years ago; but something seemed imperfect, for petroleum has not come into nse. As petroleum oil is abun dant in Santa Barbara and elsewhere in Cali fornia, it may profit onr State to inquire into the process which proves successful else where in California. A Cheap Fumioatob. The following will be found to be a cheap and pleasaut fumigator for sickrooms, diffusing a healthful, agreeable,-and highly penetrating disinfectant odor in close apartments, or wherever tho air is deteriorated. Post common vinegar on powdered ohalk nntil effervescence ceases, leave, the, whole, to, settle, and poor off the1 liquid. Dry the, sediment and place it in a shallow earthen or'glass dish, and pour upon it sulphuric acid until fumes commence anting. This vapor quickly spreads, is very agreeably pungent, and acts as a power ful purifier of vitiated air. Pafu Bzocx. Bice grass is now being in trodaced from Canada for nse of Eastern paper makers. The article is pronounced fully equal to rags. It makes paper that is superior for printing clear impression. It it said that rice Wium is- found in the Northern Statu, and prob. ably it grows in California, Barely it can be cultivated here. There is no reason why we oaanot make oar own paper; for labor is not an ebataole to success in such manufacture.
