A Deformed Birth.
We learn from Dr. McCauley, at Stayton,
tbat on last week Friday a child was born
across tbe river from there in Linn county,
horribly deformed. Its mother was frlgh
ened by her own father, during pregnancy,
ho putting on a false face or mask and sud
denly appearod before her. The child has a
.distorted face, no nosoor upper lip, and only
small holes where tho mouth and eyes
should be. Tbe mother was dreadfully af
fected on first beholding her offspring, going
into spasams frequently. This terrible fact
is due to carle'-sneas which Is inexcusable on
the part of a man old enough to be a grand
father, and we feel that the case ought to be
stated for tbe warning of others and to pre
vent the recurrence of similar events.
The Minto Pass Mountain Road.
The party which left tbree weeks ago to
prospect tbe route through the Mlnto Pass,
returned Wednesday evening, and our cor
respondent, Mr. J. Henry Brown, will fur
nish us a report of their excursion for next
issue of tbe Farmer. We learn, generally,
that tbe highest point found on the route was
abqut 4,500 feet above tbe sea lovel. They
speak well of the practicability of the routed
Rkv. Mr. Hammond.-TuIs gentleman, after
bolting a series of revival meetings in Salem,
for moro than a week, bade us adieu on
Tuesday afternoon, and started for tbe Sound
region. Tbe meetings inaugurated by him
bore have been kopt up since bis departure,
and several ministers from Portland have
participated in the exercises, in addition to
the resident ministers of this place. Mr.
Hammond's meetings hero have all been
largely attended, and greit Interest appearod
to be manifested, but bow many conversions
have been made we have not learned.
Had a Fall. Two days ago, as Dr. Mc
Afee was trying to scale a rocky point on the
river just above Smith's ferry, across the
Santiam, a stick or root gave way, and he fell
about fifteen feet, receiving bruises and in
juries tbat laid him up for some hours and
left him sore and lame. He was fortunate in
escaping as be did.

Accidents. The Albanian says that a
young man named Abram Starr, living in
tbe forks of tbe Smtlam, was kicked by a
horse on Saturday last, and so badly Injured
that he died the uext day. Tbe same paper
hays tbat Wm. Gird, wLo is now in Ochoco
valley, received a kick from oue of bis hor
ses ust below tbe knee, which was so eeere
as to almost paralyze tbe limb. He tears the
bone is fractured, and will come to Albjuy
'lor medical treatmeut as soon as be Is able to
travel. ,
A Smash )Ur. The Statesman says tbat
Linn Nichols and Clarence Hedge left Salem
Monday afternoon in a back with six Singer
sewing machine, for Dallas. On the way
tbe horses became unmanagable, and 'an
way, ruining tbe wagon and machines, and
injuring one of tbe horses so tbat be will
probably die. J
Another Boy Drowned. Trom tbe

about twelve years of age.
Elder David Brower will preach next Sun

Mountain Musings Sunday.
Throe years ago I made my way up from
Salem to near tbe mouth of tbe little North
SautUm, the object being to ilnd a locality
(bat would a lib id a gcod oimping placo for ii
family to ftpend a lew weeks in v free from
the heat, dust, and hurry of the ordinary
- alley life, whence from a shady nook a per
son might have a good view of these grand
old mountains and lazily lie and speculate
upon what manner of world this was before
tbe mountains heaved their heads above the
ordinary level, or whence a blackberry patch
or it good trout stream might be reached
without too much labor where, in short,
rest might be secured and reoreatlon enjoy
ed, free from tbe restraints of tbe " propri
eties." Well, here lam agaiu,'on the same errand,
looking from nnder the shade of a fine maple
tree. Tbe first thought is, the absence of
company. It Is early morning we call it
Sunday morning and In the stillness and
solitude tbe feeling of peace and rest that
steals over the mind here is a reminder of
Sunday morning in tho city. But, as I lie
and watch tho sunlight shining upon tbe
mountain side across the narrow valley, the
senro of a Presence, of surpassing purity,
peace and power, seems to be reflected back
to me from that mountain side with greater
force than ever 'came from pnlplt orator.
Following up, the'train of, thought awakened
by this perception, of Present, It seems no
longer strange that Moses should have as
cended the mountainMn. order to talk with
God, and that the Man of Galilee t should
from the top of an exceeding high mountain
bad a clear perception of the worthlessness
of " all tbe kingdoms of tbe earth and the
glory of them " as compared with the wor
ship and service of God or to fancy that the
patriarch was influenced by outward sur
roundings tbat enabled htm at a certain lo
cality to say, ' Surely, God Is In this place."
Lest I should be charged with an attempt
at strained writing In speaking of the feeling
of a Presence in the solitudes of the moun
tains, I will say tbat I have talked with
inauy men who live in and love these soli
tudes, who would hardly be chargeable
with sentimeutallty, and I have received the
uniform assurance that a something they can
foel rather than tell of constitutes to them
the irresistible attraction of mountain life.
One of the coolest minds of my acquaint
ance assured me repeatedly but summer
that he seemed to bear voices all around him
when In the silent woods. There is a man
now living at the extremity of the settlement
up tbe main North Santiam, of fine mind
and good education, who, under the influ
ence I speak of, spends weeks at a time on
what be calls Mount Horeb, twenty miles
from his home, and declares that the effects
upon bis mind are better and more Godward
than any preaching of man could induce.
But I am ratber inclined to rest tban write
to day, and will go to the side of tbe deep
pool near by, aud, while listening to the
sootbingtmuHlcofthe running stream, watch
the fish seeming to en toy a perpetual sab
bath, or, wearying of that, walk up the mar
gin of the flashing water and cultivate the
faculty wbicb perceives " Sermons In stones,
books in running brooks, tongues in trees,
aud good in everything." But, harkl ab, I
shall not go alone! S. A. Clarke and wife are
riding into our cainn. and. as be is readv
with the pen, I will depend upon him to tell
uis reaaers now we pas me rest 01 lulu day.

Flax Cuttino. The Albanian says that
tho Houston Bros , threo miles east of Alba
ny, were to commence the work of cutting
their flax on Tuesday. They have 150 acre?,
and the lencth is so great tbat thev can snare
a little oil of one end aud still have a lone
liber left, bo they me the reaper instead of
puuiug.
