In this country the wntor in tlio fishponds is apt to become stagnant and kill the flsh. .Hut oven In those which are fresh the fish do not manifest any such playful tuincne.s'j as do the flsh in the artificial ponds of Japan. A Japanese boy, being educated in the United States, tells the following story: On hi-s father's place is an artificial fishpond. In it arc a great many fish of species ho lias not seen here, that are about n foot long, and very beautiful in color and Joriii. xncy aro as piayuu and as tame as the kittens on our hearths. One of his favorite iunuc lncnts was going to this pond and knock ing on the edge of the tank with some hard substance, to make a noNe, when every head would be turned in the di rection of tho .sound, and every fin cm ployed in making for him, the fish ex pecting some treat at his hand. If, to tease them, he threw nothing in at first, but nut liis cmi)t.v hand into the water. with his lingers nil spread out, they would all gather round it, and seize his thumb and fingers in their mouths, till ho had as many fish as he hud thumbs and fingers, playfully snapping tmd bit ing at them, as we have all seen pup pies do. But this paradise of the Japanese flsh was often rudely broken in upon. Wlionovor flsh was wanted for dinner tho cook went to the tank and knocked, and when tlie poor, unsuspecting things swam up to her, she caught such of them as pleased her, and before they knew where they were going, she had them in the pot or pan on the ffrc. To Civil Lifi:. An interesting event transpired at La Crosse, "Wis., where fifty Winnebago Indians, ha ing complied with tho law in abandoning their tribal relutions and adopting the customs of civilization, made their ap iHjaranco at tho land ofHce and proceed ed to enter forty acres of land each un der tno nomestcau act. Tlio land is lo cated near the Black river fulls, Wis., and the Indians will at once occupy their new possessions, where they will erect farmhouses, establish schools, and generally cast off tlio generic habits of tncir race In Detroit. A slim old chap and a fat woman, husband and wife, from the 1'ast, were riding to a hotel from the depot, in Detroit, when tho man caught sight of the sun and yelled out: "Wall, dam mo if thatain't cuius!" "What?" she asked. "Why, tlio sun's right hero on my left liand in tho morning! When we're home it's right over tho boss barn! Wall, wall one's got to travel afore he knows anything!" A boy who luul stolon some apples was forgiven for tlio rather ingenious manner in which ho excused himself. Tlio schoolmaster asking him what he had to say for himself, the urchin re plied: "Tho apples wore Tom's; I don't know how hegot them; and now they're mine, and ho don't know how I got them." "Ah, Jemmy," said a .sympathizing friend to a man who was just too late for tho train, "you did not run fast enough." "Yes. I did," said Jemmy; "I ran fast enough, but I did not start soon enough."
