r 'JMWMIIMM 6 WILLAMETTE FARMER. The Mission of the House Fly. The mission of the honse fly and mosquito have long exercised the ingenuity of the most HHilnna m1 flan mna( baiaii fli TllO rronilinllV M ' received oninlon in that the? form one of the ... -... . . . - , ' 1114 or Ulfl tnal was imposfanpon namamr, yaa penally xor me unao.-curiosity ur prreuiiJiuiuu which led to the ezpnlsioa of our first parents from the garden of Eden. Ouo possible beneficial use of the mocq'ilto, inferred, in patt. from the fact that it is found almost exclusively in malarial district', is tbat its mission is to inject homooopathio doses of quinine into tbo By stem, either ns a warning to humanity tu absout itself from Ruch localit e or m an antidoto to the malarial poisons taken into the system by residence in Buch places We gave the views of the originator of this ide-t in a recent issue of the Phkss to tbo end tbat they mUht be taken for what they were worth. Arid now comos a Mr. Emersm, an English cheml-t. with rather more show of wi-dom and sci-nce than wa manifested in the propounder of the quinine theory, and gives in hU tot ory with regard to the mihslnn of the fly, winch we find expressed in the Scientific American as fol lows: Did you over watch a fly who has just alight ed a'ter soaring about the room for some lit le time? Hegois through a to-iru of operations which remind you of a ct licking herself sfu-r a meal, or of a bird pluming its feathers. First, the bind feet aro rubbed together, then each hind leg is passed over a wing, and then the fore legs undergo a liko treatment; and lastly, if you look sharp, you will see the inBeet carry bis proboscis over his leg-i and about his body as far as he can reach. Now the rubbing to gether of legs and wings may be a smo thing operation; but for what purpose is tl.ia care fully going over the body wi h his proboci", especially when that orgnn U not fitted for lick ing, tat simply for grasping and sucking up food. This auery. which perhaps mny havo ano- ested iUelf to thousands, has recently for the rsttime been answered by a Mr. Emerson; and certainly in the light of tbo rovo'atioiis of tbat pontlrman's investigations, the fly as sumes the position of an important f i nd in stead f a pe&t to mankind. Mr Erao'Hoa states tbat he begau his s lf-app' intod task of finding out whether tbo house ity really servos any appreciable purpose in the scheme of crta tion, exo-pting as an indifferent scavenger, by capturing a tine spei imon and gluing his wings down to a microscope slide. On placing the slide under tbo instrument, to the investiga tor's disgu-t the fly appeaio I covered with lice, causing tbo offending insect to be promptly re lesBed Hnd unothor suli-tltuti'd, in his place. Fly No. 2 was no better off than fly No. 1, and as lb" anno might bo predicated pf flies 3, 4, 5 (or of n flies, as tbo algebras have ii), Mr. Em erson !ouclnded tbat tboio was someth'ng which at onco required looking into. Why wore tlio flies Ionuy? Meanwhio fly No. 2, en the slide, seemed to take bis position very ooollv. and. extending Lis proboscis, began to sweep it over his body, as if he had just alighted. A gmnce mrougn ine microscope, however, showid that the operation was not ouo o( self-beaut nciillon, lor wuerever tbe lice were, tbo trunk went. Tbe lice were disap pearing into tbo trunk Me fly was eating iheml Up to tills time tbe investigator hud treated bis spocimon as of the ma-culiuo gen der; but now he chunks his mind and con oludeB it to be a female, busily devouring not lioe but her own progeny. Tim flies then carry thoir young about thtm; and when the family got too numerous or the mother too hungry, the offspring aro eaten. Awhile reasoning thus, Mr. Emerson pioked Tip a scrap of vihlle writing paper, from which two flios appoared to be busily eating some thing, and put it under the instrument. There were tho progeny again on the piper, and ,!., ,nM.ail ,.lf ullli n nlnlli "Tina " 1, says, "sot mo tntnKing, i toon me papor into tho kitchen attain and waved it around, taking care that no flics touoliod it, wont bick to the mloroscopo and there fuiuul animalcules, the satnu as on flies. I bad now arrive I at some thing defluilo; they were not tho progony of tho tly, but auimalculos floating in the air; snd tho ((link motions of tho flies guthored them ou their bodies, and tbo flies then went into Bouiu qni-t corner to havo their dainty meal," The invtHtlga'or gots on to describe how he cont nued lliti cxperimiut in a yniieiy of Iota I ties, and bow, in dirty and bad smelling quar ters, be fi.utid the myriads of flies winch ex isted tin ie literally coven d with atiinmlcu'es while other tilts, captured in bedrooms, orwoll -ventilated, clean apaitmouts, were mi-eralily Kan an I entirely fiee from tboir prey. Whore evir At h existtd, oolving girms which might oeuerute distuso, tbero were the flies, ouveilug themselves with the uiinuto organUnis aud greidllv devouring the same, Mr, Emir-on, wbilo thus proving tho utility of the tlv, has add'd another nud lower link to that C'lil'iUH aud uoeossary chuiti of dotructiou which exists in animated nature. Scieniiio Vrtst. A Looomdtivk Hill Cliupkb. A new loco motive ior use ou Ithaon hill, N. Y has maile ill appearance. Tbo Incline has five tracks, of which the two outer are of the usual width, nsod in the ordinary manner. When tbe en gine starts up the mil It rests upon a pair of rails iust v. Ittilti t be usual traok nnd upon a s t l double dinged small dnviug wheels which are npon the same axles with the big drivers they being only shout thirty inches in diameter; this inside track is raised about fifteen to eighteen inches above the outer oue, and high euoUKh so that tho big dtivera do not touch the track at all; the engine rests now upon tbe small drivers, and is iudepeudeut of the outer ones; tbeu in th oenlir of the track is placed wide togged rail, whlob ixactly meshta iulo theoog wheel, which it bttween these sinsll driv.rs, direclly uuder the center of the loco motive. Thus it will be seen that, by applying Sower to the big drivers, in the ordinary way, ie power is applied to the cogged wheel, which does tho t limbing. Tbe cogs are about three iuohea from tip to tip, and the wheel is eight inch wide. Land Plaster or Gypsum as a Fertilizer. The mannrial value of land plaster sulphate of lime has long been known and acknowl edged. As long ago as when Benjamin Frank lin lived and employed his peculiar but most effective modes of presenting great and im portant truths to his countrymen, land plaster was employed as a dressing upon the land of our most advanced and intelligent farmers. That great philosopher once adopts d the fol lowing characteristic method of teaching the value cf this important mineral as an Bid to srowing crops: Be selected a large gras field by tbe side of a public highway near Philadel phia, which rose gradually from the n ad to tbe rear of tbe field, and staked out upon its surface tbe forms of certain letters; within these forms he sowed freely his favorite fer tilizer. As the season wore away the grass ibns prepared soon (hot up f r ahead of the surrounding herbage which was not so treat-d. until it finally stood out in such bold relief of luxuriant green that no passer by tonld fail to observe tbo phenomena, which explained itself in the magic words Land Plaster. This was a practical test of the value of the fertilizer, whioh fairly spoke for itself in wrrd.s which could be neither ignored nor disputed. Tbe philosophy of this fertilizer exactly bow it acts upon vegetation is not fully under stood or agretd upon by agricultural writers It is well known, however, ihitit has a great affinity for ammonia, one of the most fertiliz ing agents known. It is this quality which gives its great value as a di-dn ectant about stables, where ammoniaoal gus is so abundant. A slight sprinkling of gypsum on a compnst heap arrests the escaping gases at once, and the unpleasant vol ttile ammunia is lost to tbe ense of smell. As fast as tbe ammonia pas-es from the mass it is taken up by the sulphuric acid contain' d in tbe gypsum and in combina tion therewith forms a sulphate of ammonia which, when placed in contact with tho root lets of vegetation, in a not over moist soil, readily gives np its ammonia as food for the plant. Hence it is reasonably supposed that when spread upon land, without a pi ior contact with tbe compost heap, it collectsammoniii Iroua the atmosphere and conveys it to the p'nnt in tho same manner hb already described. Others suppose that when applied directly to the land it possesses the powtr of condensing moisture during the cool hours of the night, and imparting its nightly accumulations to the .-on or plant roots during me day. Whether one or both, or neither of these propositions are true, there can be no mistake abont its great value as a fertilizer to every species of vegetution whether- grass Grain, vines or irees. Tho experiment of Franklin has been tiled time and again in nearly all parts of tbo country, and almost always with the most grat ifying Buccess. The conditions of its ue are simply a not over moi-t soil. In corn or roots it maybe dropped in the hill; but tbe usual way of ap plying it is to sow ii urimacaHc upou me sur taie for w lit at, us soon a'ter it is up as it be gins to show the need of moisture; tbe same with grass. For trees and vines it should be spread freely upon the ground. It need not be harrowed in when so spread under any cir cumstances. We have little doubt but that this fertilizer would prove of great benefit to the dry, arid soils of Oalifornia, We under stind that some of our farmers are already ex perimenting with it, and wetru-t some of tbem ill Bend as the results of their experiments as Boon as results are reached. s. Our intimate knowledge of the various in ventions of this coast, and long practice in patent business, enable us to abundantly satisfy our patrons; and our success and business are constantly increasing. The shrewdest and most experienced Inventore are found among our most steadfast friends and patrons, who fully appreciate our advan tages in bringing valuable inventions to the notice of the publio through the columns of our widely circulated, first-class journals thereby facilitating their introduction, sale and popularity. Foreign Patents. In addition to American Patents, we secures with the assistance of co-operative agents, claims in all foreign countries which grant Patents, including Great Britain; France, Belgium, Prussia, Austria, Victoria, Peru, Bussia, Spain, British India, Saxony, British Columbia, Canada, Norway, Sweden, Mexico, Victoria, Brazil, Bavaria, Holland, Den mark, Italy, Portugal, Cuba, Roman States, Wurtemberg, New Zealand, New South Wales, Queensland, Tasmania, Brazil, New Grenada, Chile, Argentine Republic, AND EVERY COUNTRY IN THE WORLD where Patents are obtainable. Ko models are required in European coun tries, but the drawings and specifications should be prepared with thoroughness, by able persons who are familiar with the re quirements and changes of foreign patent laws agents who are reliable and perma nently established. Our schedule prices for obtaining foreign pat ents, in all cases, will always be as low, and in some instances lower, than those of any other responsible agency. We am ana do get foreign patents for inventors in the Paciflo States from two to six months (according to the location of the country boonkb than any other agents. Home Counsel. Our long experience in obtaining patents for Inventors on .this Coast has familiarized us with the character of most of the inventions already patented; hence we are ftequently able to save our patrons the cost of a fruitless application by pointing them to the same thing already covered by a patent. We are always free to advise applicants of any knowledge we have of previous applications which will interfere with their obtaining a patent. We invite the acquaintance of all parties con nected with inventions and patent right busi ness, believing that the mutual conference of legitimate business and professional men is mutual gain. Parties in doubt in regard to their rights as assignees of patents, or pur obasers of patented articles, can often receive advice of importance to them from a short call at our office. Remittances of money, made by individual in ventors to the Government, sometimes mis carry, and it has repeatedly happened that applicants have not only lost their money but their inventions also, from this cause and consequent delay. We hold ourselves re sponsible for all fees entrusted to our agency. The principal portion of the patent business of this coast has been done, and is still being done, through our agency. We are familiar with, and have full records, of all former cases, and can more directly judge of the value and patentability of inventions discov ered here than any other agents. Situated so remote from the seat of government, delays are even more dangerous to the invent ors of the Paciflo Coast than to applicants in the Eastern States. Valuable patents may be lost by the extra time consumed in transmit tine specifications from Eastern agencies back to this coast for the ait-nature of the inventor. Confidential. We take great pains to preserve secrecy in all confidential matters, and applicants for pat ents can rest assured that their communi cations and business transactions will be held Btrictly confidential by us. Circulars free. Engravings. We have superior, artists in our own office, and all facilities for producing fine and satisfac tory illustrations of inventions and machinery, for newspaper, book, circular and other printed illustrations, and are alwayB ready to assist patrons in bringing their valuable is ooveries into practical and profitable use.
