WILLAMETTE FARMER A Newly Discovered Account ol the I'rca Hon mid the Fall. One of the great newspaper enterprises of our day lias been on the part of the London Telegraph to fit out un expedi tion under the chnrge of Mr. George Hmith, a distinguished English explorer among the ruins of ancient Chulder. and Assyria, to continue explorations that had already resulted In very remarkable discoveries. Mr. Smith had discovered an account of the Deluge among Chalde an ruins, the discovery being the un earthing of the library of. some ancient monarch who 1 tiled thirty centuries ago. Before that era of books and printing, clay was moulded into tablets and writ ten on in the arrow-headed characters peculiar to that primitive day, and then these tablets were baked, which made them morelmperisuable than ordinary stone. The first discovery of Mr. Smith was in relation to the Doltige, on which he delivered lectures in 1872. These discov eries were only a part of the Chnldcnn history of the eaily world. Afler that he was commissioned by the IXlegrcqrti with the understanding that whatever was discovered Miottld go to enrich the treasures stored in tlio British Museum. Wo give the story now In the words written to tlio Telegraph by the explorer: When excavating at KouyucJIk during thut expedition, 1 discovered ins missing portion of thelirst column of-tho Deluge tablet, uu account of which I sent home; and, In the same trtnoh, 1 subsequently found tho frag ment which I aiterwards recognized as part of tho Cualikau story of tho Creation, which relic I have noticed already in .tour columns. I exaawited later on, while htiil working wi der your auspices, another portion, belong ing to this story, lar more precious, lu riict, X think, to the immoral public, tho most in 'AMti'iSn'S and romiirkKble Cuneiform tablet yet dUcDYOred. ThU lurirs cut to con tain tho story of man's ordinal innosscci, of the temptation, una of the fall. I was, when I found it, on tlio ee ol departing, and lia'l tiot tlmo to properly examine my giejitrrlo. X hubsequeuty weut a second time to Ayila, and returned to England in June, 1S71; hut I had no IqUute to look again a; those particu lar legends until the end of January In this year. Then.startlng with the fragment of tho Creation lu the Daily Telegraph columns, which I bud lira', noticed, I b'gsn to collect other portion of the series, and cmong these ." soon found the overlooked fragment which I had excavated at Konyunjik, the llrbt Unci of which I took down in a note-book of my first expedition. X subsequently lonnd sev ual piects in tho old Museum collection, and all jliiu or t.irm parts of a continuous horks ot legnnils, giving Iho hi-tory ot thowuild irom tho Creation down to some period alter rho Oil of men. Linked with thi:. I found also oilier series of lcgi.udj on primit ive hiitorj, including tho story ot tha build ug of tho Tower of li&bel tuid of the Ccinlu HlinofTonguvi. Whatever tho i-iimulva accsunt miy have been froci wliioli tha earlier iv.i t ot tho JJ l'-U of (ionesta was copied, It is. evident th.'.t the brief narration given in the I'ontatouch omits .-. number of incidents and explanation?, fur Instance, as lo the oiigln of o il, tha Ml of 'ho ?ngals, tbo wlekflnes of Un 'tipo'i!, e'c. Suon points as tlitsft aie iuuliulod !n t'!a I'ucctforiu usrratlro; but of cotmo I can way llttlo about than until I prepare lull ::an?lati'jna of tho l"g3ids. Woaiotold, in the Inscrip tions, of the fall of tho celestial boiu: who appeals to correspond to aaiau. m uis ambition ho raises his hand against tho -anctuary of tho God of heaven, auo. the de scription of him is really magulllcent. lie is repiesented riding In a chariot through celestial space, surrounded by tho btorius, with the lightning playing before him, and yielding a thuudoruolt as a weapon. This robolllon leads to a warln heaven and tho conquest of the powers of evil, the gods In due course creating the universe lu stages, asin the Mosaic narrati ve,aurreyiug eai h step of the work and pronouncing it good. Tho divine work culminates lu the creation of man, who is made upright and free Irom evil, aud endowed by the gods with the noble faculty ofN speech. The Deity then delivers a long address to the newly-created being, Instructing him in all his duties and privilejtes.and pointing out the glory in his state. But this condition of blessing does not last long before man, yield ing to temptation, falls; aud the Deity then pronounces upon hlrxt a terrible curse, in voking on his head all the evils which have since atUicted humanity. There will arise, besides, as to the date and orisslu of the leu ends, thoir comparison with the Biblical narrative, and as to how far they may sup plement tbe Mosaic account. I'hon my investigations are complete I . will nubllsh a full aceouutof theso Genesis lerends, all of w hleh I havo now been for tunate enough to ilnd, some In tho old Mus eum -ollectiou, others by excavation In Assyria. 5 Indian Mummv. The JlMlctin says a Tew days since Mr. W. J. Warren, of Cathlamet, while walking thiough the valleys and jun gles back of that place, discovered tho re mains of an Indian boy covered with run ning vines and leaves. Upon unearthing it, he found it to be the body of what Is sup posed to be the son of a wealthy chief, pre served by the Indian mode of treatmeut. Around tho boy's neck ollngs a necklace of "wampum" valued by the Indian people at ?2,500. This is said to be the only genuine Indian mummy to be found hi this country. Mr. arren kindly donated it to tho Muse um, where it may now be seen. Kellogg's Oregon THE HERSOME GAITERS. All gentlemen w ho dcsl'O Comfort, Ease, and Neatness, WTAR THE Ilci'somc Graitci'.s.
