The most inipoitmit matter of general Interest that has transpired of lato has been the combination of transportation companies and the confeouent lieeciug of people of the l'acific coast by the In satiate corporations, which, the minute they ceased warring against each other, turned their united force to the work of devouring the public. So long as the Pacific Mail company ran opposition by the Isthmus route, and created a whole some competition, the passenger nnd freight rates were maintained at a very reasonable figuie, but at a sufficiently profitable one, as was manifested when the companies announced their leceipts and earnings for the year 1874. But now that competition is removed and the world lies helpless at the mercy of the transportation companies, freights are being advanced so rapidly that we can not publish one advance before we hear of another. Itallro.ids are vciy valuable adjuncts to civilization, or have been so in the past, but matteishuvc changed timing the Insl few years, and It looks as if un der the latest modern constiiiutton, civil ization was being i educed to become merely an adjunct to t'lC lnllrcml sys tem, something that Is toleintetl hecausu It cicates wants ami wealth that feed the hungiy corporations and please the rapa cious monsteis. What wo are to do with the rnihoails, is the great pi oblem, and as the people aie in leality all powerful inotireountry, if they can only be educated to think alike tiuil woik together, thcie Is no doubt that they will find some way to pioteet themselves from the encroach ments of these dentures, whose ttue mission is to scive the people, but wlto-e aim seems rather to be to make the wot Id ti Unitary to themselves. The sooner the people aiouse to the need of piotcctiug llieiuK'lves, the better. .1 n.i'l mllti ttrJiureSi'ii 1) I'l'Mw ii'.o '" "l Sand III l.io Hi nice No 57 riwu II t Hill tinner No in Woudliiin i.i n v" No Vi Jlowill l'i ilrlu III Mo vi hu I mini i.i iii,-e Nn-"i 1 h'I ' u r ii e No ') Ml Ui i 1 i.nije u 'ii Wu'li ".-I n .i iiij No 'i i vv ill inn ne .Mi'.'iu .n i i" Suilni'U in Mil i Iss I lilt Wil I lielllle.ll In Villi I.i lirind U'liiKi) .Nu li. i ,ie llrnun o KH 1 iliui w Ihjuhu ii 1 '1 "Mt umiii (.nujeXo 1 it .Mount ilu Mew (.r Noll.' T1IK JfKVT WHKT CROP. If the figures lately funilshed us by Messrs. Kodgers, Myer &. Cz. are correct, there shoultl be at the present time near ly a million of bushels of wheat In Or egon remaining still in hand, over nud above tho home demand that Is, if we raised any more, or even as much wheat last year as the year before. It Is proba ble that many forehanded farmers have held a portion of their crop, not liking to sell at present prices, but we heard a day or so ago of one who had held his wheat for two years, and had refused the high prices of 1873-4. Such a man must be guided by his whims more than by any good judgment based on general Infor mation. As a general thing, the wheat through tho Willamette valley looks -well, and from all sides we hear it asset ted that a larger area will be sown to wheat than over before, which is only reasonable to believe, because now farms are being constantly opened, new men aie moving in from abroad, and the old farms are be ing subdivided or goiuur Into the posses sion of more vigoiou woikcrs. There is eveiy reason why the wheat product should Increso fiom year to year, and really tho product is now small compaicd with the extent of our wheat lamb and their ptoiluctlvcness. If one fourth of thewhe.it lamls now open to cultivation in this valley and the Umpqua wero properly tilled and could produce an average harvest, tlio product would not bo less than 120,000,000 bushels of wheat in one season. That being tho ease, we are doing a small business to only produce 5,000,000, bushels a year, which is about the extent of present cul tivation. Tliu product will increase, because wheat is natural staple of ouv Stutc, and whatever other "v,jJOts may connnautl attention (lmt N..nl aiway& bo tho main ''"iieiiilence of a gieat many. The woild must have bread, and even though tlio pi ice may be low the dtmaiul ii,.'' broutft.tufl'H is always certain. We hope to ste the fruit liuslnis-j encouraged and succeed, and to see line stock made a specialty, but alter all the chief uo for the beautiful piaiiios will bo to cultivate wheat, and to ptoduoe it, eveey year, in gicaMy increasing quantity. The Plummei' Fruit Dyer. T!ie rouilorsdf tUo l'.ut.'inii fuuud last week a detailed account, with lirjjo illustrating cut, of a item Ciult ('ijtir now lu succoisful operation lu Siu FrnncUco, which is said to bo fully equ.ul to the Aldon in tlio value ot its products, while its original cjst utul txpemo of equipment ami umuin;; it is loss th m by th it process. We h.ivo received and uoed spcclmons of tlio product of the Pluminor Dryor, and Jtr. T bo Fluminor Fiult D.-yor is sold to who oor may wiOi to purchase, and no ccuttty rights ill bo disposed of. ThU strikes us 11 voiy Uvotab'lo way of doing. Tho import ance of making fruit an especial product of Oregon, and preparing same lor maikot by some suitable nud economical pioco&s, is woll set forth lu a lung article wo publish Ui is week illustrating the value of the Alden process, but uuy other process tint cau nc eouiplish equally good results has equal value, aud as experience is tho tost, wo havo only to nolo that tho Plummer machine is now- in constant aud successful oporation in Sau VraueUco, and its results can bo seen at Sir. lluuliea' store, and aro vouched for by him. Iu a letter Just received, addressed by Spauldiug liros., the owuots, to Mr. S. A. Clarke, they say: "We will bo pleased q buvojou antes agent for Plutmner's Frull Dryer, aud will send thoiuventor,Mr. Plum mer, to tot up the iltat machine. This dryer Is all wo claim for It, and a great dial more. Wo hao put into ILe machine 125 Ironies of putnpkin in -l'i hours, aud they camo out pjrreelly dry w Ithout burning. Wo can dry apples pr peaches nearly as font attain us wo eau puropknis. Our work being ttono on ouo lloor takes loas help, and Is easier managed." Mr. Clarke has written to California for full particulars ot the work done, and of the ost of the machine. It is probable that one of them will lo put up iu Salem at an early day, and as wo ha e assurances from dibluterested persons iu California that Mr. Plummer is a successful inventor, Atul that his dryer is dolug admirable aud fcallsfactory work, wo see no reason why the Plummor machines should not Hilda good market lu Oregou, especially as It would teem tbat it does not requlrs much over halt the capital to carry on the same amount of work with the Plum mer dryers that has to bo iuvested to carry ou busluees by the Aldeu process. The JiniUcr itates that ou Thursday Mr. J. W. Henderson, of Luckuuiite, when on his way to Dallas came near being drowned iu a small stream he attempted to font.
