If arrow L'scnpc ot a Cool Boy.
Yesterday afternoon Mr. F. R. Smitb, wto
lives In the hills one mile south of Salem,
was repairing his well curb, and alter remov
ing it from its Jplace, stepped into the wood
shed to get a rope, but short as tlio moment
was, a little lad named Freddy Roe, about 0
years old, son of a widow, managed to step
Into the hole and plunged into the well. The
orifice was but 18 inches rqnare, the well was
40 feet to water and the water was ten feet
deep, so the boy had quite a distance to go,
and he says he went down, down until be
thought be never would come up; and when
he got to the top of the water again, and
looked up, be thought it must be a hundred
miles to the opening. 8mitb heard some one
shouting and hurried baok to realise the sit
uation. The boy called for help and Smith
rapidly lowered the small rope In his band
and told the boy to bang to it and not try to
climb. The little fellow obeyed splendidly,
and other help coming, the regular well rope
and bucket were lowered and adjusted, the
boy put his feet in the bucket and held on to
the rope and was triumphantly drawn to the
surface. Finding himselron terra flrma again,
be made the best bow his dripping clothes
could aflord and said: "Thank you, Mr.
Wraith."
The Grasshopper Plague.
We have read of the terrible plague that
has lately devastated portions of the West
ern States and committed fearful ravages in
Nebraska and Krnsas. All through the na
tion contributions are being made for the re
lief of the destitute and starving families
who have suffered from this Bourse, whose
affliction no labor or foresight could avert,
but who are victims of a scourge that left
them no opportunity for escape.. Thousands
.of families are utterly destitute and famish
ing; have exhausted their last means and
devoured the last cow to keep life in their
bodies, and the sympathy of the whole na
tion is drawn out towards them. The dltier
ent Oranges are contributing for the relief of
' their bretheren in the affected districts and
all should contribute something for this pur
pese, for there is hatdly one among us that
is not able to give for the relief of such dis
tress. The Oregon transportation companies
offer to carry all supplies free that may be
'given for rehet of Kansas sufferers and
probably the overland railroad will do the
same.
Scbibneb's Monthly. We have received
advance sheets of the opening chapter of the
new .serial, "The Story of Sevenoaks," to be
published in Scrlbner's monthly for January
from the pen or Dr. Holland. Scrlbner's for
1875 will undoubtedly fully maintain the
great reputation already obtained for that
magazine, which has no superior, and is
now republished in England. The scene
opens atSevenoaks, which is not located at
any particular State. It opens well and gives
promise of a very racy novel. It Is not nec
essary to tell our readers tbat they ought to
supscribe for SorlbDer's, but it will not be out
of place to remind them that this is the prop
er season to do so.
Unexpected Fk'kniw. Lass Saturday
evening Mr. O. Dicklnsou was surprised by
the arrival of Mr. Orlando Wilder and wltV,
of Orland, Indiana, who came passengers
,by the steamer Ajax. Mrs. Wilder and Mrs.
Diokinson are sisters who have not met for 21
years. Mrs. U. was at Albany on a vihlt
but was telegraphed for and returned Mon
day morning to meet the friends whose Jour
ney to OreKon was solely to visit her family.
