Wo wito nt Portland this' wrolc, ntid found an iictlvo market for wheat at Sl.W per cental ; It was Sl.lWJ mi Mow lay, but llucttintod through tho week, I ilto uvcnigu Icing $1.U. Some u!ghtccn I vessels are in the Columbia, and over fifty more are on lho Way, to arrive be fore tho tlrst of February. The tonnage to arrive within the next flxt days, with that already in the river, will fig ure up over HJOyOOO tons, and yet parties are taking ships as they arrive, at ad vanced rates, endeavoring to keep up freights by 3harp maneuvering. If the wheat In this valley could be handled In the interest of producers, and furnished thefce f,btp8 as they want Jt, instead of being bought up at low figures by specu lators, the farmers could control freights absolutely in their own Interest and real ize better prices. There seems a great deal of diflluulty in securing that harmo ny of sentiment and union of action among the produceis necessary to success in 'this matter, but the people are being educated up to it and another year will seo matters in much better shape. The European demand for brcadstulTs has caused a slight advance, and a firm er feeling than has existed hitherto. There is now an active demand at going rates, and the wheat market is every wlicro active instead of stagnant. It is probable that within the next sixty days a moderate advance will take place, but freights may bealso advanced. There is an active demand for oats. At Portland Black Oats aro quoted at 40c, white 4'2 ets. Tlio demand is occasioned by tlio scarcity in Oregon; no oats are be ing shiipcd. The Salem Milling Company have dis patched thoCity of Dublin, and are now loading the Clan Macleod, 1000 tons, and tho James Wislinrd, 1200 tons, with wheat, untl tho liimari, 1000 tons, will load with Hour from Salem Mills. An other ship under charter to that compa ny arrived last evening. Direct trade has now assumed such proportions that Oregon products will have their proper place lu the world's markets, for the first time In our his tory, we are not shipping breadstull's to California, but dealing directly with Eu ropean countries. This will be greatly to our advantage hereafter. llailroad freights from Albany down are now at same rate as by tho river, a new ar rangement that has just gone into operation. The river is now doing a great part of the business of freighting. London, Nov. 24. The Mark Lane Ex press says: There is a general continental ad vance lor one suuung on wneat.
