.FIJI MR i . 4 HTf.aLMAaai W VIIA:METTEFRMER; " 'Anctfnt Lakeiof Ohn.j A Professor, donier, Bute Geologist at Oregon, Is giving a series o( lectures in Portland, uni of which re reported in the Ortgmfon. That paper eayat, , The subject tor the sixth lecture was " Tbe Ancient Lakes o( onr Interior," and many (os nil remain, taken from Tarlone points In our Btate, both eaat and west of the Cascade moan tains, were exhibited by the speaker to anb atanttate' his theory that the great sea onoe cOTered all this coast, and extended clear to the borders of Kansas. - Several facta hare been proved In prior 10 tnres. Among them were First The whole Paclflo slope was onoaasea bed, a fact proven by the presence of rocks in all parts 'containing shells of animals known to nave lnnaoiiea in sea only. Second That the pressure that elevated or raisea mis country np oni 01 ins water came from the l'aclflo ocean. This was demonstrated bv the inclination of the strata or lavers which bore any Indications of having been disturbed since ineir aeposu. ine loiusor suaia indi cate the direction in which the lorce.that tilted them np was applied, so that there waa no dan ger of mistake on this point. Third That the l'aclflo ocean Is now deeper than It once was, which waa shown by sonnd ing made In the vicinity of coral reefs. Corals never work In water deeper than 125 to ISO feet, while their reefs are often found to exceed ten thousand feet down. That the settling of the bed of tho ooean has kept pace with the rise of the reefs is tho theory upon which this waa ex plained. Fourth That the settling of the bed of the ocean was the result of cooling of the earth's crust. This process of cooling would crumple the earth's surface just as the shrinkage of an apple would leave the skin wrinkled In Ioldt. Ho the settling of that pirt of tho earth's crust constituting the ooesn'a bed would neces sitate the upheaval of other portions, as In the falling In of one part of an arch, other parte are pushed outward. In this process, the press, urs would be greater where iber was the most water, and If we go a thousand miles to the north, where the l'aclflo ocean If the narrowest, we find the mountains lowost, or if we go two thousand mile southward, we find opposite the vastly wide part of the ocean, the very high mountains of the Andes.- The raclfio coast consists of threo great plains. From the first or southern alone the waters which once covered them were drained by the Colorado river. From the central plain the Haters were gradually dried np by evapor ation, while from the northern slope tha vast body ol water that once covered It waa carried off by the chaunal of the Columbia. We infer that when the ranees of disturbance operated, the strata had all been deposited. If we find two of these strata upheaved or cruni- iled, and a third overlying these, not ao up leaved, we infer that this stratum Las been deiKiilled sine the causes which produced the iinhcaval of the other two were in operation. The npfoldlng of the earth's crust which form ed the lllue Mountains, in the eastern part of our State, began In the eocene period, was quite active In the eocene-tertiary, and ceased iu the pliocene and since thst time no great convulilona have taken place. In tho days of these upfoldlngs there were no mammoths, and none of their remains are found in the rocks of the eocene period. The Vine Mountains have not been connected with the older parts of the contlueut by the withdrawal of the water. These mountains were the nnclens of what now constitutes Oregon, and were the first part which appeared as dry land, though aome parts ol Bouthern Oregon wero very old, and further explorations might upset this theory of the oreatest antiauitr btlomrlnrr to the lllue Mount ain rrgiou. Iu those days, plant life waa leaves. Many of these brauchleta are still pre served in inerocts, in a petrmea lorm. The surface In the vicinity of these moun tains is generally of volcanlo material, though granite and basalt are frequently found, The heat produced by tli pressure from seaward sometimes changed the appearance and chemi cal character of the rocks on lb coast. Tha Coast Itanga contains many more indications of being an old oasl-up sea bed tbau do the lllue Mountains or the Cascades. The upturned edges ol the folded strata can be seen along the western foot of the Cascade and eastern foot ol the coast range. These strata dish under the Wallomet Valley, and the same extend northward to Bltka and southerly beyond Ban Francisco. The Deschutes river flows through a baaaltlo rock, in soma places over thre thousand feet thick, the southern through basin or oil lake-bed. Oolng east ward from the Deschutes, we come to John Day's river, ' At the great bead in this last stream'the' basalt only capped the hills; the great molten bed which bad flowed out of the Cascade mountains, cooling aa It traveled, waa three thousand feet thick at Dstobute sad only a few feet thick at John Day's, From the high bUI lot JUi bend ot John Dy ons can sea for 'sixty miles one of tb most" beautiful collections of rocks on, the globe, They are of all forms and all colors. These .'rocks indicate the fact that a atream of lava onoa ran through this Usi,' visible from1 lhbill named. The! basin la the bed of an olJlak.f In liar found many enrioua remains, among1 them those of the three-hoofed herse and camels. Many of the same animals existed In Oregon In the pliocene-tertiary period, that art now found ip Asia Tha speaker concluded by expressing bis confidence la this theory of the comparatively moderaorltof'aiaa.ihoatJaJka'Udiagfot human bones In sny period would not upset a single article in his cnadj II bad out, aa yet, beeu permitted to visit Bouthern Oreson. and exploratloa In' tba.fregldnj might discover great dVatt'awaa to b Un ld .'country, remaps oiaer man ins - inns-? mountains. It exists nrinolnallv in the form of cane sugar, or crystalliiablasugsr, grape sugKr, ur giucune. ana lectin, or sugar Ol milK. In the first form it Is, found most abundantly In the sugar cane; In' sorghum, which is, how ever, in fact, only a variety of the sugar cane; in the beet, and In tho aap of th maple tree, from all of which it is manufactured In large quantities. Indian corn haa also been tried as a producer of sugar, and In th Patent Office reports for 18U are itlven. bv Mr. Webb, the results of some experiments with corn-stalks. Oood sugar can be mad from corn, but not In quantitiea to mas tbe crop profitable, as com pared with other crops which might be pro duced upon the same land. Tha aeoond form of sugar, Is partially nn crystallizable, and exists largely In tho grape, bene Its name, grape sugar. It exists however, In the juice of msny ripe fruits, and to It they owe their sweetness. Also, In the nectarifer ous glands ot flowers, and in connection with another uncrystallizible form of angar, similar to the brown syrup of tbe sugarcane, and with certain odorous, jiiojiuj and waxy matters It constitutes honey. Tho pooplo naturally said: 'So, O imam, wo uo notr -men, earn riasr-cu-uoen, 'it Is useless for mo to try to teach people so ignorant.' And he descended the steps of the pulpit, On tho following Friday the mosque was crowded with the faithful, when Nasr-ed-deen again began: 'O my people! do you know what I am about to say to you? And tb'o people, mlnfnl ol their previous experience replied: 'Yes, O imam, we do!, Tnen,' sold Nasr-ed deon, 'it ia needless that I'should' repeat' it to yon.' And he descended the steps ot the pulpit. On tho third Friday Nasr-ed-docn addressed a yet more numerous audience than before with the samp qnestion; and ths people; after some hesitation, cried, in reply: '0 imam, soma of us do, and somo 'let those who know toll Ihoso who do not ot us do notl' 'Then,' said Nasr-txl-deon, know.
