The cravlna of a child for aweets is well known to bo one of the most Imperious of their appetites. It haa reference probably to that ceaaeics acuvny wnicu especially cnaracter ixes the age of childhood. Home arm Sckoot. The Law ol Fatigue. Dr. Ilaughtos, in his "Animal Mechanics," states the law of fatigue aa follows: When the tame muscle (or group of muscles) la kept in constant action until fatigue act in, the total work done, multiplied by the rate of work, I constant. 8uppoa a man, walking at hla ordinary pace, doe not become tired nntil he ha gone thirty mile. If ha walk twice a fast, then by thia law be would be exhausted at the end of fifteen mile, having done onlv half the work In a quarter of the time. If he walk tbree times as fast, be will be tired at the end of ten miles, having done one-third of the work In one-ninth of the time; and ao on, the total work dona varying as the squire root of the time neoesaary to produce fatigue. Where the rate of work ia very rapid, aa In a boat-race, 111 of course impossible to keep it up for any great length of time. The actual amonnt of work done In such a case is thus illuilrsted by Dr. Ilaughton: A good Idea may be formed of the rate in which the muscles give out work in a boat race, from comparing this work with the average daily work of a laborer. A many Unda of labor there are 400 foot ton of work accomplished In ten hours. The oarsman performs (this 1 arrived at by calculation) in on minnta the 100th part ol hla day' labor, and if ha could continue to work at the aame rate, he would finish hliday'a task in one boor and forty minutes, instead of the customary ten hour. The work done, therefore, In rowing on knot In the aeven minutes, ia, while it laaU, performed at a rate equal to six tlmei that of a hard-worked la borer, "A NriDiro lUrot. Dr. UacConnac, of London, advances the theory that conaumption, or tubercular disease, ia canted solely by breathing air that ha already been breathed.
